COMICS: After Secret Wars, No More FANTASTIC FOUR

Post Secret-Wars, Marvel Comics is putting the Fantastic Four on long-term hiatus, with Thing joining the Guardians of the Galaxy and The Human Torch joining The Avengers. The 616-Universe Prime-Earth Reed Family head into what could be considered comic book limbo.

Marvel Comics executive editor Tom Brevoort confirmed in a new interview that over the course of the new Secret War miniseries, one of the end goals for Marvel was to come up with a way to shelve the Fantastic Four.  Without delving too far into spoilers for those that have yet to read Secret Wars #9, the Reeds (Mr. Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Franklin, Valeria) and the Future Foundation are definitely left in a state that could be considered akin to comic book limbo.  Said Breevoort, "at a certain point, we set out [in Secret Wars] to do the last Fantastic Four story, at least for the time being...we didn't necessarily start with that as the original goal."

He further explained, "
Fantastic Four has been one of those books that, for a number of years, has been effectively taken for granted.  It's been considered stodgy, or old school, or some people see it as a thing that's there and people are comfortable because it's there, but they're not particularly passionate about it. So we're not going to have that book for a while."

Breevort goes on to compare the current state of the Fantastic Four to the condition the Thor series was in a few years back.    Sometimes a little time away can result in a fresh start and a fresh voice that can return a once popular title to prominence.  Case in point, Jason Aaron's run on Thor is one of the best superhero comics on the market today.

Actually can't argue with his logic. However, with the state Marvel comics are in (politics over stories and characters), it doesn't matter much. Look at the top 500 list. If Marvel hadn't got Star Wars back, they'd be getting trampled by the competition.

Secret Wars event was really good despite the constant delays & what seemed like a little rushed final issue. Sad about the F4 though. Another sad thing is unlike the last major event that "shook" up the Marvel U(AvX) there's not many titles that interests me.

Agreed. Fantastic Four has had great runs over the years, but it seems to get lost in the shuffle during large crossover events. Hopefully Marvel will bring back the characters at some point in the future.....

As a long-time fan, I surely hope they'll return.

@MexicanSuperman "don't blame Fox, blame Marvel and the fans. Its Marvel fault for not given the Fantastic Four good stories which makes fans not want to buy them"

No, the last few F4 runs were very good, they got good reviews but that happens though. That like I, Vampire over at DC. Great series but got cancelled because of low sales.

Like @MarkJulian said, some time away might do the F4 good

If Marvel studio or Fox would've made a badass Fantastic Four movie, that's very faithful to the source material. Then I'm 99.9% sure Marvel comics would try and keep the Fantastic four comics alive somehow.

These days we live in a world where movies are supporting and keeping the comics alive

But you're also right, the FF comics haven't sold well at all for MANY years and Marvel doesn't really make any good stories concerning the first family

One of my favorite comic book groups.
Sad to see them go into hiatus, but I don't have a vote over at Marvel Comics.
Maybe we should view this as a "mid season break"?

To it's credit, Secret Wars brought an end to the Fantastic Four with a bang. I almost shed a tear on the last issue. It's probably the best Marvel crossover event since the original Secret Wars. I implore anyone who hasn't already to go and read the preceding New Avengers and Avengers stories by Hickman and follow that with the Secret Wars crossover. These are comics at their finest.

@Nomis

It really makes sense. FF was the first title from the modern incarnation of Marvel comics. So comics fans over the last 10-15 years considered it their 'Grandpas comic'. I read FF off and on over the last few years, and while they were decent, it was nothing mind-blowing. Breevoort is right, the FF had gotten to a point that they were taken for granted. Kind of like Thor, Hulk and Cap. They're doing what they think is necessary to breath new life into them. I'm just not sure they're going about it the right way.

Again, if they didn't have Star Wars, they'd pretty much be sunk right now.

I understand the political side of all this situation.. the Marvel Studios/Disney VS Fox thing...
But that´s a huge mistake in my oppinion.
A lot of people allways talk about how hard it is to make Fantastic Four stories.. but to me in the comics I read the most genius stories in Fantastic Four title.. the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby´s fase.. The John Byrne´s fase... the Walt Simonson´s fase... They were always the best stories for me.
Allways love the characters, the familly and the sci-fi concepts... so.. I hope everything works out for the FF...

Going off the top 500 Capt. Fairness. Marvel dominated the top 10, but they were all Star Wars titles. Get some balm for that butt hurt, jeez.

Also, I can tell a lot of people on here don't actually read the comics. The guy who brought the Fantastic Four to an end, Jonathan Hickman, wrote one of the most epic Fantastic Four arcs ever just a few years ago. It was so good Marvel let him streer the entire Marvel Universe for the last three years. So Marvel not giving FF good stories wasn't the problem

DanJack - 1/14/2016, 6:58 AM
If the FF would go back to Marvel, they could do something epic with the franchise. I'm not surprised that they are needing to rehab the image after the total disaster of Fox's last FF movie.

Marvel has consistantly put their best talent on FF. Millar/Hitch? Waid/Wieringo? Jim Lee? Hickman/Epting?

Who do YOU think Marvel should put on the title?

Hickman's run was THE best since Roy Thomas' run in the mid-seventies.

. . . and then they took him off it.

Kinda funny watching all you guys act like you actually read FF books. Lol. But, yeah this is due to a combo of low sales and Fox owning the movie rights. Why would they offer free promotion for fox when the books aren't even selling. Makes absolutely zero sense. If Marvel still owned the movie rights they might be more willing to eat the cost and keep the book out but that's not the world we live in. [frick] Fox!!!

Soooo, is this news, I thought they already said this...
Fox should just give up on FF and give the rights back to Marvel...

GreedoSarducci - 1/14/2016, 7:06 AM
Sucks that they're doing this, but if it ultimately helps in getting the film rights back in Marvel's hands I'm all for it. How could Fox possibly consider retaining those rights after such a pathetic turd of a movie coupled with zero comic sales to support the franchise?

Oh wait, it's Fox. They probably will.

Pretty obvious that Marvel is trying to get the rights to the Fantastic Four back by killing the comic.

The Fantastic Four film would be phenomenal if made by Marvel Studios especially if they could get any Namor involved.

But Marvel REALLY needs to "up their game" by releasing a new series of animated films called "Marvel Comics Classics" where they go back to the original stories. I think that would sell BIG time.

I am so glad I'm not an FF fan. I'd actually be more pissed off at Marvel than Fox.

Oh wait... they're screwing over the X-Men still. [frick]ers.

@GreedoSarducci

Marvel wanted Galactus and Silver Surfer in return for letting Fox extend the rights for Daredevil. Fox refused, and DD returned to Marvel, who then turned it into a popular and critically acclaimed show. Fox considered this a HUGE slap in the face, seeing their attempt at DD went so badly. So, they're terrified of history repeating itself, because they know full well that Marvel would a better job with FF then Fox did in 3 (technically 4) attempts.

However, with Fox getting the two X-Men shows they wanted, maybe relations have thawed a bit...

On the one hand it's definitely a sad step given the place of the team in the history of Marvel comics, but on the other hand it's probably not the worst idea to take a break from something if it doesn't have a real audience at the moment and you're not quite sure how to change that. Like with, well, Fant4stic.
