COMICS: Details On Deadpool's "Death" Emerge

Yesterday, we brought you the news that Deadpool would be buying the farm next February. Details were sketchy, but now writer Daniel Way brings us up to speed..

I don't think that many of us really took the concept of Wade Wilson dying that seriously when word hit that next February's 50th issue of Deadpool would see him meet his maker. But while speaking to Newsarama about it Daniel Way acknowledges that fans have become "jaded" with characters being killed off and that this arc (a five issue run called "Deadpool: Dead") will not be something we can prepare for. Here is an excerpt from Newsarama's interview with Way in which the writer also reveals which other characters will be making an appearance in the story..

Nrama: Moving on to "Dead" itself — obviously, character death is a loaded concept in comics, especially with a character like Deadpool. How seriously should readers be taking the concept? Tone-wise, does the story play things pretty straight, or is it more of a commentary on the concept of death in superhero comics?

Way: A lot of both of those things. A lot of readers have become jaded with the whole, “In this issue...a hero will fall” thing, and I don’t blame them. I’m one of them. That’s why “Dead” is what it is; and it’s nothing like what you think it’ll be. Bluntly, I don’t think readers can prepare for this one.

Nrama: Deadpool has had a death wish for a while now, though he obviously hasn't been successful in his attempts. Though it's still way early, what can you tease about the way out he discovers? Is it big and splashy or maybe surprisingly subtle?

Way: All I can tell you is that this isn’t something I pulled out of a hat—this is not retcon. This something that goes back to the very origin of the character. Is it subtle?! Hell, no — this is a Deadpool comic!

Nrama: The details of the "Dead" story are pretty scarce — can you share any info about what other characters might be involved, other than, of course, Wade Wilson himself?

Way: For now, I can tell you that X-Force will be playing a key role, as will Kingpin, Typhoid Mary and The Hand. That's just in the first issue...and it's only half the cast.

Sounds very interesting and should at least make for an exciting read even if The Merc With A Mouth doesn't stay dead for very long.

I'm actually going to miss the dude because the only thing I'v read with deadpool in it has been X-Force. He's been great in that book, but we'll see how long he's dead for.

Agreed, Rick Remender has the best handle on Deadpool. I stopped reading Way's book along time ago. I'll miss him in the pages of Uncanny X-Force.

I'm betting he dies and Death (or whom ever they have handle that type role) gets fed up with him and forces him to come back. The books will be his adventures till that point.

Count me in with the group that thinks Death doesn't want him and spits him back out in short order.

pretty good character he has been over used the last few years, maybe killing him off will be a good idea.

i can't see him being dead for no more than six months.

Well, he's not going to stay dead since it's supposed to be a play on frequent comic book deaths. Plus, they said it goes back to the very origin of the character, so they're going to reference his relationship with death. Still very interested to see how this plays out.

Awesome. I'm sure however it happens, it will be hilarious.

Deadpool's solo title and his Fear Itself books have been really good lately, so this I'm sure will also be great.

Way: A lot of both of those things. A lot of readers have become jaded with the whole, “In this issue...a hero will fall” thing, and I don’t blame them."

Now thats an understatement. Death has little meaning in comics other than to make a quick buck for publishers, then even more when they return. This form of capitalism is ruining comics for me. I know it must be hard for writers to continually come up for stories for these sixty plus year old characters, but if its that bad leave the title and let a young blood in who wants to show their stuff. If they such, boot them and get someone else. If theyre good keep them on until they get sick of the title too. This whole killing off things has become cliche.

I'm sure the "Dead" arc is going to end with Deadpool saying "Hey, I'll be back next month. I'm a comicbook character remember?"

Way said it goes way back

Deadpool almost died from exposure to radiation in "Deadpool #1" back when Joe Kelley was writing

thats why he had to fight hulk to get his gama-blood
