COMICS: New DEADPOOL Covers Feature The Merc With A Mouth Battling Undead Presidents

Many thanks to CBR for the covers above. The site also has a lengthy interview with Deadpool writers Gerry Duggan and Brian Posehn, and below are just a couple of quotes about the zombie Presidents that the Merc With A Mouth will be facing off against this Winter. Be sure to click on the link below to read the Q&A in full.

Gerry Duggan: Whatever your political lean is you'll be able to pick up the book. The presidents are back for a very specific reason; someone thought that they might be able to help the country now. Obviously that's not how it worked out because they are back and they're running amok, and the big guns of the Marvel Universe can't be seen taking them on. So this is a perfect opportunity for Deadpool to sort of rise to the top. So there are political jokes in there, but this is a book for everyone and in terms of tone Brian and I were raised on action comedies. We think "Ghostbusters" and "Big Trouble In Little China" are the places where some of this story comes from.

Brian Posehn: There's not going to be any point where you're going to go, "Oh. This was clearly written by two liberal pansies." [Laughs] Our politics will not come into it at all. Like Gerry said it's basically about this shortsighted character that's looking for a way to fix things. Everybody knows that our country is messed up, especially in this book. This character thinks the way to fix it is to bring these guys back. They're a little scary, but they're not brain dead like Romero zombies. They're dead versions of themselves. They talk the way they talked when they were alive. So some of these guys are straight up scary and some of them are clowns. Lincoln and Washington are going to have their crap together a little better than, say, zombie Reagan.

In other words, 'were gonna continue to ignore the point of the character and his obvious personality and circumstance, and apply traits and charascteristics that have nothing to do with him in order to I don't know'.

the deadpool comic has gone downhill over the years but he has been on top form in the pages of uncanny x-men.

@toco89 and @Equinox

You guys DO realize that these are two completely new writers and we have yet to see a single "Deadpool" issue from them? Maybe actually wait to read one of the issues before deciding that they don't know what they're doing. I'm not saying it will be good, but at least give them a shot. It seems like you're blaming them for what Daniel Way and Marvel did to the character.

Besides, the fun of Deadpool is that he's detached and can therefore go anywhere and do basically anything so long as there's something in it for him. He rarely ever has any personal agenda, he's almost never part of any particular team, and his loyalty typically lies with whoever is paying him. He's essentially fueled by id. So why not have him fight presidential zombies?

@ddrussianninja

Doesn't seem you get, or at least remember, Deadpool.

And you do understand my comment was paraphrasing what Phosen was quoted as saying was his vision for the character. He either only read Way's Deadpool, is doing what Marvel tells him, or just doesn't care about the true identity and defining traits of the character. 'He's crazy, that's all I need to know.'

I'm liking deadpool's new costume. Especially in the first picture.

Haha, if anyone has been reading Uncanny X-Force recently, I want to say future Punisher made a comment about not being able to shoot Deadpool because of Zombie Nixon.

Uncanny X-force Deadpool was closer to what the character was in the beginning. His solo series is for children with the odd geek-culture reference. I would say pop-culture, but it isn't. The problem with all the writers who came and went is you could tell immediately that he was written by someone else. The tone of humor changed. Posehn is a comic with another style of humor. Just like Deadppol MAX was over the top. The tone on this one looks similar. Over the top isn't funny unless your balls haven't dropped. I agree with equinox.

Ive been a deadpool fan since circle chase, and own every comic with dp in the title, and once again i find myself defending Way. All I hear now is how way destroyed DP, and I just cant agree. I dont know what most people have been reading now and comparing it to, but Way's dp is bada$$.

As far as the character goes yes he has changed, but i call it character growth. Do you still want him spazzing out when someone sees him without the mask. Guess what he got over that a long time ago. Do you want to see him still in love with syrin, got over that one too.

If Way's pool is over the top, I wonder what you thought of thorpool, or loki's son thom cruise.

Guess what he has always been about pop/geek culture, he sho-ryukened kitty pryde for christsakes. He's been singing since Vol 1. And actually knows he's in a comicbook, so he talks directly to the geek.

Think he's always getting beat up under Way, lets see. Some metro sexual name cat repeatedly spanked him, along with the b.a.d. girls. Punisher knocked him out with one punch. It was a running gag that his super hero weakness was duct tape.

Oh you think he stumbles into win with sheer stupidity, lets see. Beats Taskmaster with the macarena, and hulk impales himself on a street sign. Lets not forget falling through a sky light shooting, thinking he killed the 4 winds, but no it was the other guy who did the killing. Leading into (imo) the worst dp line, agent x.

Oh I guess people still want Gay for cable deadpool. Or dressing up like Marvel girl.

Through all this and Way's DP is the worst? SMH.

I have always been a fan of Deadpool. I"ll pick it up next month. Duggan & Posehn have a good storyline lined up.

Deadpool didn't grow with Way, he degenerated or simply moved along plot lines and eventually they had to shake it up and made him mortal again.

@Toco
Didnt grow? So the whole suicidal DP into I want to live dp isnt growth. Thats been the ongoing theme since after the bullseye arc. What about wanting to be a hero again, and f-ing up. I know its a rehash of classic dp, but every vol of dp has been about that. Its core to his character. Way has slipped up from time to time, but he didnt ruin the character.

Reminds me of Frank Quitely's art, which I'm okay with. I think there's just a lot of people unsure about this comic, but I'll be giving it a chance..

I mean, c'mon, it's Deadpool.

I don't think anyone's even noticed Dr. Strange in the very back of that first cover. He would have something to do with this.
