Cyclops' Resurrection Explained In Today's UNCANNY X-MEN: ANNUAL #1 - SPOILERS

With the X-Men on their way back to Marvel Studios, Marvel Comics is finally making an effort to feature the characters in a way that will make fans happy, and that includes the return of Cyclops...

Before his death, Cyclops has become a full-on villain and borderline psychopath. Creative decisions like that alienated longtime fans of the X-Men and the past few years haven't really been a fun time to follow their adventures (especially during Marvel's ill-fated attempt to replace them with the Inhumans).

However, things are finally looking up for the mutants as Cyclops has returned from the dead and he'll lead a new squad of X-Men alongside the original Wolverine (who has also been resurrected).

Scott Summers made his return in the pages of Uncanny X-Men #10 but it was in today's Uncanny X-Men Annual #1 that we finally learned how he was brought back. It turns out that Kid Cable used a piece of discarded Avengers technology - used to try and trap the Phoenix - and implanted it in his father's chest knowing that the returning Jean Grey's Phoenix Force would be absorbed by it.

That then revived Cyclops and he was kept prisoner by his son for a number of months before being offered a choice: try and save the X-Men in an ill-fated battle against Legion or save the human who helped bring him back. It's a test by Cable to see which version of Scott he's dealing with and the hero decides that his mission is no longer just about saving
mutantkind: he needs to help everyone.

With that, the heroic version of Cyclops is truly back and the issue ends with him vowing to rebuild the team, a process which will begin in earnest in Uncanny X-Men #11.

Are you glad to see Scott back? Share your thoughts with us in the comments section.

Villain Cyclops was the best Cyclops. Also, I don't recall much hate for him? It was a satisfying arc that made a lot of sense that Marvel writers built up to for years.

His death on the other hand... that was just weak. Killing an OG member off panel?

@adamcawa - i was a bit indifferent with it , even tho i understood his motivates .... he was flirting with line to being close to magneto . at certain points he looked like he went out of his way to be a d*** sometimes

@adamcawa - but if they can find a little blend with both and less boyscott i think that could work very well imo

@adamcawa - Cyclops has been my favorite comic character since I was a kid, some 30 years ago.

I totally agree with you. I loved what they did with him all the way up until his death.

Its was always said that his downfall started back in the 90's after fusing with Apocalypse, but anyone that knows X-Men knows that Cyke has ALWAYS been a very flawed character that has made very questionable decisions in the past, long before he ever fused with Apocalypse.

So I always considered his transformation from hero, to extremist, to villain very natural. Especially after everything that happened to him.

I mean, the one person he trusted like a father and mentor turned out to be keeping family secrets from him. Its no wonder he strayed from Xavier's teachings and started taking matters into his own hands.

And the fact that it was all happening and building over the course of decades is so awesome because it just made it feel that much more real.

Having said all that I wouldn't mind a trip back to heroic Cyke so he can build up a new team and make things start feeling more like a traditional X-Men comic.

This may be the first Marvel comic I start buying in years. Fingers crossed!

@knocturnalzen10 - That's because he and Magneto both became villains for the same reason. The Evolutionaries appeared to them both, decades apart, and made them the sole protector of the mutant race in the coming racewar. Then they wiped their mind of it, so they both felt a hypnotic urge to protect mutants over humans without ever knowing why they were being so extreme.

@CorndogBurglar - I would say Cyclops' first really big dick move was abandoning Madeline Pryre
Like I get he never truly loved her and was on a heart broken rebound. But he still married her. Just dumping her like that was cold.

@adamcawa - People tend to have the same reaction to him as to other leader characters. That because he's the hard line leader he's a complete dick due to often being the 'stop messing around guys' character

That said he has made some really dick moves in the past. Mainly cheating on Jean and abandoning Madeline Prye

@adamcawa - People fricking hated Cyclops before he died.

@adamcawa - always hated that the writers always had such a hard on for the race traitor wolverine that they did everything to turn cyclops into magneto.

@CorndogBurglar - That’s exactly how I feel about Cyke. He’s been my favorite for 30+ years as well.

Cyclops sure has gone through a lot these years. I wonder how the MCU will handle his character and stories when the time comes.

@NinnesMBC - Hopefully like a traditional Cyclops. He needs to be the leader of the team and it's far past time for the films to focus on his backstory and Sinister. I want this more than anything else.

Off-topic: @Rohan Patel, first look at Lex Luthor on Supergirl and when he will debut.

Metropolis’ most notorious villain is about to become National City’s problem. As previously reported by TVLine, Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men) is joining the cast of The CW’s Supergirl in the iconic role of Lex Luthor — brother of Lena (played by Katie McGrath) and arch enemy of Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) — and now, we have our first look at the bald baddie in action.

Lex will make his inaugural appearance in Supergirl‘s March 17 episode (The CW, 8/7c), appropriately titled “O Brother, Where Are Thou?” Per the episode’s official synopsis, “Lex Luthor reaches out from prison to enlist Lena into one of his plans and will stop at nothing to get her on board, even if that means leveraging the life of one of her friends.”

You know, it does kinda suck that they turned him into a pretty full-fledged villain the last few years, but they did kind of a bit of interest too. He was always very dry and boring to me. I grew up with Xmen when Storm was the leader and she always seemed to have so much more character. Cyclops was just "the leader", and the love interest. Not much more. These last few years have added a bit of depth to him, but personally, I still prefer Storm. I also kind of disliked how they always tried to diss Havok by doing the whole "Scott's the perfect leader and you suck" thing. (Can you tell that Havok is another of my favorite Xmen?)

@benjithegreat - Haha. That's so funny because I can't stand Havok.

He's always come off as a whiny bitch to me. If he's not complaining about being a poor leader and living in Cyclops' shadow then he's crying over Polaris, or willingly becoming a full fledged villain for no real reason.

The only Havok I ever liked was 90's X-Factor Havok.

@CorndogBurglar - Actually, Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire Havok was pretty awesome too.

shadowspider9 - 1/23/2019, 2:14 PM
@CorndogBurglar - Havok is a character i feel has a lot of potential but they never use it right due to the whole 'I'm better the Cyclops' crap.
They need to take a page from Batman. 3 Robin's who all live in Dick Grayson's shadow but all manage to be their own great characters.

@CorndogBurglar - I loved the simplistic nature of his first suit - Actually, I guess overall, my favorite Xteam was the Outback Xmen... and maybe toss in Nightcrawler for good measure

Please make him the noble leader Cyclops and not the questionable judgment or full-on villain Cyclops.

@RolandD - YES, I miss 90s Cyclops. The new edge-lord Cyclops got old.

I don't hate the new costume, at least. It's visually interesting.

Meh. I've lost a lot of interest in the X-Men. I like the All New X-Men. I only picked up the first issues of Red, Blue, and Gold. I didn't get any of the Black run.
