This November, Marvel Comics will release Marvel's Voices: Comunidades, a new one-shot in the groundbreaking Marvel's Voices series that will continue the tradition of highlighting the cultural richness of Marvel Comics and uplifting new voices in the comic book industry.

Following the success of the Legacy and Pride specials, Marvel's Voices: Comunidades turns the spotlight to Latino and Latinx heroes and creators from all corners of the Marvel Universe.

It's said that these all-new stories will feature thrilling adventures of some of Marvel's most popular heroes while celebrating the range of their cultural heritage as told by fan-favourite writers and artists (and those making their Marvel Comics debut). Believe it or not, Marvel's first Latino superhero, White Tiger, wasn't introduced until 1974 in the pages of Deadly Hands of Kung Fu #19

Since then, Marvel has introduced many new Latino-descent heroes from a multitude of different backgrounds including current stars such as Miles Morales, America Chavez, and Reptil. Those heroes and many more will be celebrated when Marvel's Voices: Comunidades #1 arrives on November 10.

Moving forward, we're hoping to see Miles Morales make his live-action debut, though the animated web-slinger will return to the big screen in the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse sequel. As for America Chavez, she's set to make her MCU debut in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Who's the white tiger lady? I like her cover, the last one. Even though she looks like a mix of Black Panther and Vixen, she looks cool.

@BritishMonkey - Josh literally used it to create “engagement” in the comments. No one likes it. Every Latino friend of mine hates it. The only people who use it are clueless white people (my people) or people trying to stir up “discussion” in the comments.

@BritishMonkey - there's a bunch of words you can use. Hispanic and Latin American are both what the community are throwing out. And Latino, while traditionally meant for men, is technically something you can use when talking about someone without a defined gender (sure it's meant for someone you don't really know, but it can still work here).
GeneralZod
GeneralZod - 9/28/2021, 7:32 AM
@BritishMonkey - I'm Latino, and I think the term is ridiculous and perversion of the Spanish language. Developed by non-Latinos to push a non-Latino political agenda, thinking Latinos/Hispanics will follow like sheep.

@BritishMonkey - what's the difference between "Latino" and "Latinx"?

Honest question here.
BritishMonkey
BritishMonkey - 9/28/2021, 11:10 AM
@Fogs - Others have already made pretty good explanations but Latino is the appropirate term for folk that are Latin American.
Latinx is a derogatory term created by white business folk trying to be inclusive to score brownie points for themselves that no Latino people like at all, find offensive and openly reject. The word makes no damn sense when there's Latino, Latina and Hispanic to choose from.

Also Marvel: uses latinx, a term 97% of that community doesn't use because they find it offensive.

My co-worker doesn't even let me joke about the phrase Latin-X. She said she, or her people weren't in the room when it was decided that you can just change the name of her heritage. There are also issues of gender erasure inherent in the word itself. Latino. Latina. It worked fine... Up until like a couple years ago, when a few power tripping people decided anything incompatible with their limited world view is to be eradicated, or at least clumsily deconstructed. Look, I'm not an expert on this. I'm black, I don't have the same heritage as her, but from what I hear, she is far from the only one a bit more than annoyed at the phrase. Don't even get me started with how much my people have been used as a political prop especially as of late.

@JoshWilding please stop using Latinx, it's an insulting word created by white people given to us. Nobody likes it, nobody uses it, you can't pronounce it in Spanish and it will never be embraced by the Latino community.

On that note, Marvel sucks with their Latino representation, just look at the Marvel group picture taken a few years back, Michael Pena was the only Latino in it. They have no Latino super powered people in their movies, no, Gamora and Salma Hayek's characters don't count since they're aliens, and scrapped the Ghost Rider series with no intentions of bringing back Robbie Reyes. The picture above in reality sucks, I mean Miles Morales? But I thought he was being used for the Black History posters? America Chavez sucks and is also an alien. Who's that reptile guy? or the one behind him? And then Sam Alexander and Robbie Reyes are legacy characters who the people on these type of websites keep complaining about and would rather see the original versions on the big screen (Richard Rider & Johnny Blaze respectively). So the only real Latina that Marvel really has that nobody complains about is White Tiger.

But I grew up liking Iron Man, so whatever, I never read comics to "see myself in them", just read those stories to enjoy them without looking at color or having Marvel pander to me like they're trying to right now.

@IronMan616 - Appreciate the education and explanation - this was the verbiage I was sent by Marvel Comics and asked to use, but I will see what I can do about it.
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 9/28/2021, 6:05 AM
@IronMan616 - I'm the same way. As a kid I identified with Peter Parker more than T'Challa. I didn't even read the Black Panther comics that often. I was a geeky American kid. Not the most popular. Not the most organized. Just like Peter. T'Challa was a freaking king of a fictional, magical country. I can't identify with that. I also lived a couple of hours from NYC. I was used to seeing that city. Just because I share the same color as T'Challa doesn't automatically make him someone I can see myself in.

Just like Lando Calrissian. I couldn't identify with a flirty, caped, smooth talking elitist guy who ran Cloud City on Bespin. I was more close to the farm boy. Humble, unremarkable life, working at an early age etc. Now that's not to say representation doesn't matter. It absolutely does. Growing up in the 90s, I had a seemingly endless list of people to look up to. Actors, comedians, rappers, singers, authors, athletes, political figures who were all Black. And that's all good. But I'm aware enough to recognize everyone's humanity and struggle. Without sharing their skin color.
