Disney has settled yet another legal battle regarding the rights to its most famous characters, ensuring they won't be losing any of Earth's Mightiest Heroes anytime soon.

According to Deadline, Marvel's battle for Spider-Man and Doctor Strange has now ended after attorneys for the Disney-owned company and the estate of Steve Ditko managed to reach an amicable settlement following years of legal battles. All parties now expect a stipulation of dismissal with prejudice to be filed imminently.

Back in 2021, Marvel filed a series of lawsuits responding to copyright termination notices from Larry Lieber and the estates of Gene Colan, Steve Ditko, Don Heck, and Don Rico. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, and The Hulk were among those at stake, but the Disney-owned company managed to quietly settle matters with all parties back in June.

The ongoing dispute with Ditko's heirs continued, though, with Spidey and the Sorcerer Supreme at stake. The termination notice revealed that the estate was looking to reclaim rights from comics including Amazing Fantasy (including Spider-Man's 1962 debut) and Strange Tales (including Doctor Strange's first appearance the next year).

The notices were also seeking "any character, story element, or indicia reasonably associated with the Works."

Ditko, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange's co-creator, passed away in 2018. Disillusioned by the time he spent at Marvel Comics, Ditko was rarely seen in later years and is believed to have had little love for Stan Lee, the writer who took the lion's share of credit for creating almost all of the Marvel Universe's characters.

The trade explains, "As in previous settlements and resolutions that Disney/Marvel have reached with the likes of the Jack Kirby estate and others, the settlement with the Ditko estate is confidential. However, a well-positioned source says that all sides are 'very satisfied' with the outcome."

Millions, tens of millions, or more? We'll never know but these characters won't be going anywhere now the matter has been settled.

Steve Ditko worked with writer Stan Lee at Marvel Comics in the early 1960s, playing a pivotal role in shaping the visual aesthetics and narratives of characters like Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. Known for his distinctive style and creative imagination, his contributions extended beyond Marvel to include work with Charlton Comics and DC Comics.

His legacy remains significant in the comic book industry, with Spider-Man becoming one of the most enduring and beloved superheroes in popular culture.

A very interesting man, Steve Ditko was.

Check out the Documentary "In search of Steve Ditko" for some pretty interesting stories aboout him during his time at Marvel.

@Nomis929 - Is that the one with Jonathan Ross and Neil Gaiman?

He definitely should have got more credit, same goes for Jack Kirby.

@marvel72 - Yes. And Alan Moore, and John Romita Sr., Stan Lee and a host of Marvel's talent from the '60s and '70s are on it.

I still think t's up on Youtube.

@Nomis929 - Yeah I've seen it, very good watch,I am pretty sure Stan Lee has trouble saying that Steve Ditko co-created Spider-Man.

@marvel72 - Interesting doc for sure - I need to revisit that one. I'd bet a kidney that Ditko was on the spectrum and his later Objectivist themed (or heavier themed) stuff reminds me of a comic book version of The Exegesis of Philip K Dick.

Overwhelming and dense in the macro but interesting as [frick] in small doses.

@marvel72 - Actually Kirby had the first crack at Spider-Man and it was exactly what you'd think - a gimmicked up buff dude that was handsome with a spider ring and web gun or some shit.

I have a complete run of The Jack Kirby Collector and I am OCD on all things historical - which is why I get so bent out of shape over today's bastardized whoring out of American icons of pop culture.

@marvel72 -

You know it man. I grew up immersed in the comic book world in the 60s-80s. So much creative genius going on from the 50s-90s, I can't begin to credit them all without writing a novel.

@DocSpock - I was reading my dad's comics in the 70s and early 80s then I got into them buying my own with my paper round money.

I own The Amazing Spider-Man omnibusus Steve Ditko and John Romita runs.

So many great artists back then George Perez,Neal Adams, John Byrne, Marc Silvestri and Barry Windsor Smith are probably my all time favourites.

@marvel72 -

Adams & Byrne were so great with the art & stories. they are two of my all-time favorites. Batman, GL/GA, Man-Bat, Rhas al Ghul, Fantastic 4. Some of the greatest comic work ever.

In 1961-1962, when other kids got fairy tales, my Dad read me Superman comics.

Yes, he was. Camping, swimming, hunting, fishing, comic books, science fiction books/movies, & working hard for stuff you want.

That was what he taught me in the 60s & early 70s.

@DocSpock - Ahh that's so good, my dad is also a great guy who got me interested in good music, films, books and overal on how to be a really good person, by his example. We should be grateful for having dads like these. Many people don't, unfortunately.

You too hit the Dad jackpot. And you win. I love many genres of music, but my Dad only listened to Italian opera. It still hurts.

There was a fascinating essay online for a while about how Ditko did 98% of the creative work on Spider-Man during his run.
It suggested that Ditko created the Peter Parker/JJ Jameson relationship dynamic as an allegory for the power imbalance between himself and Stan Lee.
IMO, Ditko is an under-appreciated genius artist on the level of Dali or Picasso.
Batmangina
Batmangina - 12/8/2023, 8:43 PM
@Armpitwebs - Ditko was DEFINITELY a genius in design and layout - check out his CREEPY and EERIE black and white stuff right after he left Marvel.

The use of Zip A Tone and whites is [frick]ing unreal - better than the best acid trip and the guy didn't do drugs.

Doctor Strange is obviously a masterpiece of impressionist/surrealist and every other 'ist' you could put on a nine panel page.

Nobody ever came close to his Doctor Strange.

@Armpitwebs - i don't know how anyone can ress the early spidey issues and not clesrly see stans hand.

Ditko ideologically is so opposed to spider man that the version would have written wouldn't even be similar to the Peter we know.
Armpitwebs
Armpitwebs - 12/9/2023, 8:38 AM
@Toonstrack - I agree, Stan’s general “hand” was there in forming the concept and providing guideposts.
It was Ditko who gave Peter Parker/Spider-Man the pathos and soul that came to define the character.

I'm glad they got something, the man was a legend.
Quite possibly the first comic book character most of us were introduced to,I would add Batman and Superman to that list.

@SirDuckAlot - Most definitely, I don't watch the end credits of Spider-Man movies but they should be mentioned in the credits.

Thanks to The Ditko Estate.

You can see why Marvel created Miles Morales now,if they lost this case to the Ditko's.

They would have just replaced him with Miles, I bet you don't see as much of Miles now in the comics.
Reeds2Much
Reeds2Much - 12/8/2023, 8:34 PM
@marvel72 - Nah, Miles was created well before these lawsuits even began.

Acording to Axel Alonso he was created basically to capitalize on Obama's election.
