Milo Manara's SPIDER-WOMAN #1 Variant Cover Is Bound To Stir Up Controversy

But then, that's the point isn't it? Manara (who is known for his overly sexualized/erotic artwork) has put out a really good variant cover for Marvel's upcoming Spider-Woman relaunch. Really good? Try ASStounding! (sorry). Take a look after the jump.

CBR have posted a list of Marvel's Spider-verse solicitations for 2014, and among them was this little beauty below. Yeah sure the horny fanboys will love it, but with the major comic companies (apparently) serious about making a conscious effort to depict their female characters as more than just sex objects...well, Manara's cover doesn't exactly move things forward.

SPIDERWOMAN001Manara-06299

Oh, and here's the slightly less pervy regular cover from Greg Land:

Looks a bit too pastel to be a cover, but it still looks good. But that's a lot of ass coming from a variant.

LMAO. This is basically a public plea from this Manara guy, saying "PLEASE DON'T EVER TAKE ANY OF MY ARTWORK SERIOUSLY EVER AGAIN"

I'm in utter disbelief that we're in the year 2014, and people still draw superheroes like this. Wow.

Why is it good artists (the drawing and colour is nice) have to be lower themselves by doing this?

Even that 2nd cover isn't much better. Spider-Woman's right leg looks like a stump, as if her leg was blown off in an IED explosion, and I have no idea what kind of pose is going on in the background. Absolutely awful artwork.

@JoshuaGraham

That's because one leg is positioned differently than the other, so the glute reacts accordingly. It's anatomically correct.

And there won't be controversy over this. There's covers that show more that get published on a weekly basis. I don't even see how it's sexualized. People see what they want to see. If you're looking for it' it's there. Not to mention, that when this is published, the title logo will likely cover it.

The only things i find controversial about this are her super small nose and humungous lips.

Are you seriously complaining for this cover? That is Manara's style. Women with very sexy although awkwardly exaggerated and anatomically weird bodies.

The man is a god. Very old school.
