SPOILERS: SECRET EMPIRE #1 Brutally Kills Off A Fan-Favorite Supporting Character

The first issue of Secret Empire goes on sale today, but if you were already upset about Captain America's recent actions, you're going to want to turn away now as this may just leave you fuming!

Marvel has gone into damage control mode with Secret Empire, posting stories on ABC News (which is also owned by Disney) asking fans to remain patient and essentially wait and see when it comes to the story which has seen Captain America join Hydra, a group most commonly associated with Nazism. However, the events of the first issue are unlikely to calm down fans fuming over this latest event tale.

As was first reported by Bleeding Cool, this opener sees Captain America attempting to recruit Rick Jones to Hydra. When he refuses, Steve Rogers ordered him to be executed by firing squad, and as you can see below, that happens. Brutally gunned down, there's no way he's surviving that hail of bullets.

Rick was first introduced in 1962's Incredible Hulk #1 as the youngster who inadvertently leads to Bruce Banner being transformed into the Jade Giant. He played a key role in that character's stories for years, but later became Captain America's sidekick and even worked with the likes of The Avengers and Captain Marvel. In recent years, Rick was transformed into the Gamma irradiated hero A-Bomb.

At this point, you have to wonder if there's really any coming back for Captain America. What do you guys think of this Secret Empire #1 twist? Be sure to head to the comments section to let us know.

@Unites - since Cap is probably going to stop appearing in major ways after phase 3 it probably would not happen, I guess they could do it with Bucky, but then there wouldn't be much different compared to captain america the winter soldier

Meh. Shock value for the sake of it is never truly shocking.

@MattBellissimo - Precisely so.

I don't really get worked up about things in the comics since it's always been a pretty frenetic and slipshod medium, but lately it does seem closer to performance art than anything else. (Especially the periodic rounds of self-flagellation in the name of long-time fans.)
