The MCU Is Sleeping On A Genuine Powerhouse - Mimic: The Man Who Stole The X-Men’s Powers

Mimic is what happens when you give someone 5 mutant powers and zero chill. His real name is Calvin Rankin, and his mutation is simple: he can copy the powers of anyone near him. But Calvin didn’t just copy one X-Men – he copied five of the original team at once. That means CYCLOPS optic blasts, ICEMAN ice control, BEAST agility + strength, ANGEL wings + flight, and JEAN GREY telepathy. All in one body. No prep time needed.

Think about that power set for a second. Flight + telepathy + optic blasts + ice + super strength + agility. Most Marvel heroes spend years mastering one ability. Mimic got five at the same time. And unlike ROGUE who has to touch people, Mimic just needs them to be nearby. He’s basically a walking X-Men team.

His biggest run was with The Exiles, Marvel’s dimension-hopping team of misfit heroes. That’s where Mimic proved copying powers doesn’t mean copying skill. He led teams across realities, fought world-ending threats, and made tactical calls that saved entire universes. Having powers is one thing – knowing how to use them under pressure is another. Mimic mastered both.

The Catch + The Skill

There is a catch: Mimic’s powers fade if the original mutants leave his range. But Calvin got smart. He found ways to extend the duration and store power signatures. By the time he hit Exiles, he could hold onto abilities long enough to finish a mission. That’s tactical thinking – using his weakness as a timing advantage.

He’s also fought the main X-Men team. When he first appeared, the X-Men saw him as a threat because he could match them power-for-power. CYCLOPS vs Mimic’s optic blasts. JEAN GREY vs Mimic’s telepathy. He didn’t win every fight, but he proved he could hang with the best mutants on Earth.

Why He’s OP But Forgotten

Marvel has a problem with Mimic: he’s too versatile. Writers don’t know how to challenge him without taking away his team. So instead of using him, they bench him. That’s a mistake. Mimic’s story isn’t just “guy with powers” – it’s “guy learning responsibility”. He started arrogant, thinking powers made him better than the X-Men. He ended as a leader who understood that powers mean nothing without teamwork.

Imagine Mimic in the Krakoa era. He could copy STORM, MAGNETO, WOLVERINE, PHOENIX, and PROFESSOR X all at once. That’s a Omega-level threat right there. Marvel needs to bring him back for modern stories.

Bottom line
Mimic is OP if Marvel used him right. He’s a walking X-Men team with leadership skills and dimension-travel experience. Fans forget him, but villains never do.

My take: 9/10
OP if Marvel used him right. Walking X-Men team with Exiles experience.
