CONSTANTINE: Lucy Griffiths Exits; New Character 'Zed' To be Written In

Although True Blood's Lucy Griffiths played Liv in the Constantine pilot, NBC have decided to write her out of future episodes, and bring in a character that should be familiar to Hellblazer fans to replace her. More past the jump..

Apparently wanting to go in a "different direction", the Constantine showrunners have decided to write the character of Liv out of the series -- and of course that also means saying goodbye to the actress that played her in the pilot episode, Lucy Griffiths. Instead of Liv, they're bringing in a character called Zed, who in the DC/vertigo comic books was originally John's lover before reappearing as a pagan sorceress. According to THR, "she will appear in an early episode of the series, with additional characters from Hellblazer and the occult DC universe to be introduced later. Zed will, however, be the first to appear." More occult DC characters eh? That should be interesting -- Zatanna? Swamp Thing? Etrigan perhaps? Anyway, it's a shame about Griffiths but Zed is a cool character, so it just remains to see who they'll be getting to play her.

Hellblazer comics had a trend of killing off supporting characters or sending them away. It would be interesting if the show did that as well.

I'm kinda glad, for some reason I felt she was going to become annoying in the future.

Wait, was she the girl who Constantine has the pepper spray interaction with in the pilot? If so this is very cool, I could tell they wanted her to be a mainstay, glad for the change of heart.

I thought she was okay, and as the series progressed Lucy would have grown into the character very well. Oh well, at least they're making this choice early on and not midseason.

Huh. Well that's odd.
I wonder why they did that?

Maybe she leaked the pilot by accident somehow and they found out...lol!

Wait, didn't the show revolve around her?

Yes and no.

She was sort of the odd-fish central figure that the experienced Constantine character could bounce things off of and explain the occult world he lives in to the audience.

It also helps to develop the Constantine character to have an inexperienced rookie under his wing that needs his expertise.

Basically she represented the audience going in blind to the occult world based around Constantine, and in that sense she was a set up to be on of the major characters for the show.

She's supposed to be the audience-relatable Luke Skywalker to Constantine's Obi Wan Kenobi.

That's the basic formula, so it's odd they suddenly ditched it.
I suppose Zed will now fit those shoes.

@ Neonzel I totes missed that

@ McGee That is the true Zatanna. If anyone says different I'm going to threaten them with homoerotica

Jason Blood and Etrigan would be amazing. I didn't think Liv was played that well by the actress so I don't mind.

Aww that's a shame!
I like her as an actress, I haven't seen her in enough to say "wow she's amazing" but she looked as though she suited the character from what I've seen.

I guess it's cool that "anything goes" and they aren't having the love interest from the beginning be constantly around. I do hope they write a cool ending for her character.

But yes GIVE US ZATANA!

I didn't like her character all too much in the pilot. There were almost too many questions from her and I know it's like that to establish the occult and everything but it was just like I'm getting to know too much too early on.

I haven't seen the pilot, but the impression I got from the trailers is that she was a Rachel Weisz clone. Weisz played a character with the same function in the Keanu movie. Same function to the plot, looked like her, sounded like her. Probably best to brush her off. Showed the trailers to several friends, most of whom weren't familiar with the comics, and a few of them asked me why "that chick" was in it if it's different from the movie.

I dunno. Maybe that's it.
