SDCC '13: Jim Lee On The 'SUPERMAN Vs. BATMAN' Announcement

DC Comics co-publisher Jim Lee shares his thoughts on the "Man of Steel" sequel announcement at SDCC that revealed we're headed for our first big screen team-up between Superman and Batman. And now we play the waiting game...

I'm considering cryogenically freezing myself until 2015, there's just too much awesome that year to take chances. One of SDCC's biggest, if not THE BIGGEST news to be unveiled this year was the revelation that Batman will be joining Superman in the sequel to "Man of Steel" which will be released in 2015. There's no release date at the moment but odds are favorable that it will be a summer release (maybe winter/Christmas if the studio is concerned about vfx time constraints). Discussing the news DC Comcis co-publisher Jim Lee stated, "'Dark Knight Returns' is my favorite [comics], it's what inspired me to get into comics. It has an amazing battle between Superman and Batman...just to finally see it come to life after all these years, it's gonna be awesome." Lee quickly backtracks from that statement saying he has no idea whether Zack Snyder's film will draw inspiration from that climactic battle but Snyder did reference "The Dark Knight Returns" as a direct inspiration for the film. It's hard to imagine what else Sndyer and screenwriter David S. Goyer could possibility lift from the material besides that climactic fight. Snyder even had actor Henry Lennix come on stage and read a line from that climactic battle.

And now we play the waiting game. We wait to see who will be cast as Batman. We wait to see whether there will be actual villains and if so, which ones and from who's rogues gallery. And we wait for 2015 to arrive, a year that will be one of the biggest ever for fanboys of DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Star Wars and a whole lot more!

I'm suddenly not that excited.. Unless the battle is midway through the movie after a tense build up. And then something truly horrifying comes to pass and they must team up! I just think if the movie culminated with their fight it'd be boring.

I don't really want this to be a "VS" movie. Zack Snyder said it himself that this is a Superman sequel. That has Batman in it. Batman shouldn't overshadow the main character in his own movie. Even if it is called The Worlds Finest, the two should have equal screen time, even though Batman seems to be the most popular

Joel Edgerton for batman!!

I'm not that sure about this guys. As much as I love both Supes and Bats; I don't think this film would work well. They should've gone with the 'actual' sequel to Man of Steel or even and new standalone Batman film just to establish him in the new cinematic universe. They should've gave other characters a go. A would love to see a Flash movie announced. Well... That would likely be hold back for a couple of years.

Batman vs Superman?

I thought it was going to be a team-up movie?

Just don't make Superman Batman bitch.

Batman should not be able to challenge Superman physically, but mentally.

It's annoying as hell when screenwriters can't conceive an original story & steal elements from classic comic book storylines.

If you want "Returns"..then faithfully adapt it.
I'm not saying make that movie,I will just read the books but if your making a movie..SUPRISE ME WITH SOMETHING NEW!!

SMH @ the level of stupidity making the Superman sequel based on TDKR. I really try to like what DCE does but its just hair pulling, head scratchingly hard to fathom their thought process. That comic was told from a very particular viewpoint that was supposed to be a goodbye to the Silver Age Batman told years after his retirement. It wasn't supposed to be the beginning of Batman's career it was supposed to be the end.

They do realize that the fight in Dark Knight Returns wasn't a real fight, and that it was staged by Batman in order to fake his death so the Government would leave him alone, don't they? In a real fight, Batman doesn't stand a chance. Just look at how Faora swatted away highly trained military personnel with ease in MOS. You also can't tell that story from Dark Knight Returns without the history behind it, and this Batman and Superman have no history between them. The only reason Batman could keep pushing Superman to attack him in that fight in DKR, is because he knew that Superman would just knock him around a bit, but ultimately wouldn't hurt him. For all that this Batman knows, this Supes would snap his neck if he tried the stuff he does in Dark Knight Returns on him.

Its even hard to fathom why Snyder and Goyer want to base a Superman sequel off this comic when its entire angle is to show an older, morally compromised Superman who has struck a cynical bargain with the political establishment. Superman at this point in their story arch is barely beginning to develop a sense of his own idealism and morality, so what is the point of having him showdown against an anti-establishment Batman?

Its gonna have to be slimmer as the AO suit is a winter suit.
LFANCH
LFANCH - 7/22/2013, 2:55 PM
There shouldn't be a fight between supes and bats in this. That would be totally ridiculous, especially after all that ass superman kicked in MOS. There is no way batman would have a realistic chance whatsoever. Unless you introduce kryponite and make it a cheap way for batman to make superman his bitch.

Well at the end of "The Dark Knight Rises" Bruce Wayne/Batman basically went back into an unknown fate from the citizens of Gotham. So I mean if they do nod to the franchise of The Dark Knight Returns you can show how Bruce Wayne returns to Gotham and etc. and finds himself introduce to many new villains who've risen since the absence of his precence or possibly they'll have a much younger Bruce Wayne than an old one. Someone in the age range of their early to mid 30's perhaps??
