DC Studios Co-CEO James Gunn Responds To Zack Snyder's Recent Comments About The DCU

Rebel Moon director Zack Snyder recently commented on the previous DCEU era being relaunched as the DCU, and DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn has now responded...

Warner Bros.' now defunct DCEU began with Zack Snyder's Man of Steel, and while the divisive director didn't go on to helm every movie in the franchise, he was instrumental in shaping what eventually came to be known as the "SnyderVerse" era.

A relaunch of the DC Comics-based franchise was announced last year, with The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran taking over as co-CEOs of the newly implemented DC Studios. Gunn is currently in the process of helming the first official DCU film, Superman Legacy.

While doing the rounds to promote Rebel Moon - Part 2: The Scargiver, Snyder was asked how he feels about the new DCU.

“You know, I’m a pretty open book. I really feel like, you know, if the characters are treated with reverence, and mythologically correct, then I’m down. I’m in,” he told CBR. “Let’s see what happens. I’m pretty excited. I mean, we’re going to get Superman pretty soon, so we’ll see what that’s like.”

When asked on Threads if he'd seen Snyder's comments about being "excited for the DCU," Gunn responded: “I didn’t, but I knew it already because he’s texted me. He’s been incredibly supportive throughout this process."

Some die-hard Snyder fans who want to see a restoration of the SnyderVerse choose to believe that some kind of animosity exists between these filmmakers, but that's clearly not the case.

Gunn was also asked about the planned Lanterns Max series, and shared three disco-dancing emojis in response. This has led to speculation that the show will feature three ring-slinging heroes as the leads. We're not sure if that's what he meant, but we'll take his cryptic reply as a good sign!

Finally, Gunn was asked to "blink twice" if any DCU projects other than Superman and Creature Commandos are preparing to film, and responded with a GIF of Lana Del Rey... blinking twice (possible "Gods and Monsters" nod). We know that Peacemaker season 2 is currently shooting, so he may simply be referring to that, but there might well be another movie or series about to commence production.

Superman is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025. The film stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor and María Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer. The ensemble also includes Skyler Gisondo, Sara Sampaio, Sean Gunn, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Isabel Merced and Nathan Fillion.

“Overjoyed to be announcing the start of principal photography on SUPERMAN today, February 29, which just so happens to be – coincidentally and unplanned – Superman’s birthday,” Gunn captioned the first official photo earlier this year. “When I finished the first draft of the script, I called the film ‘Superman: Legacy.’ By the time I locked the final draft, it was clear the title was SUPERMAN,” he added. “Making our way to you July 2025.”

Filming had been taking place in Svalbard, Norway, but is now believed to have moved to Atlanta, Georgia.

That's pretty cool of Snyder as seeing how things ended with the DCEU. And Gunn being complimentary of Snyder as well.....
Just makes your heart swell to see everyone playing nice 🧡

Isn’t Supergirl set to film sooner then later?…

They recently have gotten a director in Craig Gillespie apparently and Millie is already cast with others in progress so i can see that being another project going into production soon.

Nice that there's no malice between em, it's just business and at the end of the day, they're friends so...

I just hope that Gunn...knows what he's doing, that he's wise enough to learn from the mistakes of the past over at WB AND Disney/Marvel Studios.

If they flop again then it's done.

Lanterns and Swamp Thing is what I'm looking forward to seeing the most.

Superman is in good hands.

Really interesting that Snyder pretty much name drops everyone in the industry or talks about his "mythologically correct" old flicks when no one wants to watch his new flick.

@Doomsday8888 - ikr? Can't even talk about it when people are directly asking about it.

And people say I just find excuses to complain, when they're literally getting angry he's talking about something he was asked about.

@Doomsday8888 - First of all, he was asked about DCU but I never criticized his willingness to answer. However, he was not asked about Tom Cruise being in Watchmen, neither did he have to defend a "mythologically correct" movie that came out 11years ago a million times, neither did he have to repeatedly say he wants a Directors Cut for another movie he made 15years ago, etc.

“Mythologically correct”

The nerve of this guy

@GhostDog - i guess he means in regards to how the characters take influence from the greek gods? So maybe he means mythologically in that essense? And i suppose there are multiple versions of batman and superman and wonder woman to pull from. But yea that is pretty funny coming from him regardless.

@CaptainFlapjaks - The 'gods' angle was Snyder's take on the DCEU. He wanted to approach the superheroes as gods among us. I get it and it's an interesting take, but it isn't necessarily an accurate take on how they're portrayed in the comics though.
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 4/21/2024, 7:22 PM
@bcom - no i mean in the actual comics. The hall of justice statues and giant justice league logo with the group posing is meant to emulate the idols of the greek gods. Superman is apollo, batman is hades, ww is athena, etc. But snyder did go quite literal with it, yes. Whereas the comics are more symbolic of the comparison

@CaptainFlapjaks - Yeah. You hit the nail on the head there and clarified what I was trying to say. Snyder went very literal with the 'gods among us' angle with his take on the DCEU. Although it is implied in some comic storylines, it is not the overall main theme running through DC. I get what Zack was trying to do, but I think he was focusing too much on that aspect and not enough on the heroic side of things.
CaptainFlapjaks
CaptainFlapjaks - 4/22/2024, 12:39 PM
@bcom - i agree. But i think given his past amd how he approached 300 and watchmen, he has an obsession with mythology and turning it literal. Like the spartans in 300 were treated like they were above man in terms of ability and prowess. Almost godlike with the literal golden chiseled six packs wheras the spartans only had chest armor with the appearance of six pack abs.
bcom
bcom - 4/22/2024, 7:59 PM
@CaptainFlapjaks - True. But 300 is literally a straight panel to screen adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel which itself is also a heavily stylised take on story. The Watchmen comic also leans heavily on the heroes seen as gods theme. But I see what you're saying. I think Zack took that approach over to the DCEU but leaned far too heavily on it. He treated the heroes as gods but forgot to treat them as heroes first.

@bcom - yea aha i just remembered it was an adaptation of a comic.

Gunn didn't replace Snyder. But Gunn has the position Snyder could have had IF Snyder had made great DC movies. But Snyder wanted to take the creations of others and recreate them so the praise would be all his. When his recreations sucked and were rejected and flopped, he wasn't man enough to own his mistakes. He acts like we are in error to not like his garbage versions of great characters.

Gunn has already proven he can't make great DC live action. All he can do is zany self parody like he did with GOTG.

@PartyKiller - He hasn’t proven he can’t make great DC live action just because he has taken a different route with his first two DC creations. If he had tried to do more serious shows and failed you might have a stand with that statement.

It would be awfully petty for Snyder to hold ill will towards Gunn; if anything he probably hates Warner Brothers. And it's not like he's picking up where Snyder left off storywise, he's starting his own comic run. Plus, it's not like there isn't going to be another reboot of these characters years down the line yet again, when Gunn doesn't have to deal with the years of BS anymore.

Superman has two weeks to fight for as much money as they can, because after that, The Fantastic Four movie hits. July is going to be good

@Timerider - But will The Fantastic Four actually be a threat. Previous movies haven't been box office smashes and everything that's coming before it could also hinder its performance, the MCU isn't the powerful juggernaut it once was.
