We found out late last year that Black Panther star Michael B. Jordan had boarded Warner Bros.' planned Static Shock movie as a producer, and the project has now found a writer.
According to THR, Randy McKinnon, who has previously worked on Disney+ football drama Safety and Netflix's Chambers, has signed on to pen the script.
Static debuted in the pages of the now defunct Milestone Comics back in the '90s before being rebranded as Static Shock for his own animated series a decade later. The character was then reintroduced as part of the mainstream DC Comics universe in 2008. For those unfamiliar with the hero, Static Shock is Virgil Hawkins, "a teenager who transforms into a superhero who gains electromagnetic powers after being exposed to strange gas."
Jordan is producing via his Outlier Society production company alongside Reginald Hudlin, who directed Safety. Though there's been no word on whether the actor will also appear on the movie, it's worth noting that Jordan has had supporting roles in all of Outlier's previous projects, including Kin (2018) and Raising Dion (2019).
No director has been set and we have no idea if any actors have been seen for the lead role, but the project is said to have "an urgency and agency surrounding it," so we should learn more fairly soon.
