DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Reportedly Undergoing “Significant” Reshoots

While it should be no cause for alarm, a new report has revealed that Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently undergoing "significant" reshoots, but not for story reasons.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Marvel Studios' highly-anticipated Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is currently undergoing another "significant" round of filming in Los Angeles in what is being described as "additional photography" and "reshoots."

Why is it being labeled significant? Well, it's been confirmed that leading man Benedict Cumberbatch and a few select cast members will be involved with at least six weeks of shooting, possibly more, and will be working six days a week until the end of the calendar year.

Spider-Man trilogy director Sam Raimi remains at the helm of the massive Multiversal adventure, with screenwriter Michael Waldron also involved, scripting new material.

The crew recently completed additional photography on both Tom Holland's Spider-Man: No Way Home and Oscar Isaac's Moon Knight, so they're already quite familiar with how Marvel Studios likes to work, which should make the next month-and-a-half a little less daunting.

There are some conflicting reports about the actual severity of the reshoots, with some insiders suggesting that these were always scheduled in advance - “Even while in the middle of production, Marvel is scheduling you for more shooting” - and that they're not even the biggest round of reshoots the studio has ever pulled off: “We’ve had bigger reshoots on other MCU movies.

However, others are more skeptical about Marvel Studios' claims: “They’re here until the end of the year. That’s like a whole other movie."

On the bright side, the reshoots don't seem to be because of anything story-related. About two weeks will actually be spent finishing portions that weren't completed during principal photography earlier this year due to actor availability issues, while the remaining portion will be to catch up on everything they had to delay when the film was forced into a lengthy production shutdown in the U.K. due to COVID-related complications.

The cast and crew remain optimistic, and it's believed that despite everything, it'll still be comfortably ready for its May release date.

Plot details are under wraps, but in addition to Cumberbatch reprising his role as the Sorcerer Supreme, the supporting cast will consist of Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, and Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is set to hit theaters on May 6, 2022.

@BlackBeltJones - Right? Why do they always act like reshoots are news? These movies ALWAYS have reshoots.

@BlackBeltJones - Honestly, does anyone else just sit back sometimes and consider how monumental what Kevin Feige and the people at Marvel have achieved? No one growing up now will really get it but to everyone a bit older… this cohesive interconnected cinematic comic book universe is nothing short of a miracle! I mean… we are discussing a freaking dr strange sequel and I just saw an eternals movie and a Shang chi movie??? What world is this!? It’s amazing! Ok nerd rant done. Thank you for listening <3

@Shivermetimbers - if anything, this article does its best to dispell any rumors that the reshoots are anything significant. Just merely reporting they are filming more. Undoubtedly someone would try to spin this information as cause for concern if it was reported normally.

If it wasn't* reported normally.

@DeaconFrostBite - I think Feige is a GENIUS and years from now everyone is gonna realize just how SPECIAL he is and what he’s accomplished. It’s legitimately groundbreaking.

@BlackBeltJones - yes! Couldn’t agree more! When I see directors and actors complaining about all the comic book movies I’m just like… sit down… we comic book fans did not think this possible for so long…. And now we have a sandman show coming out that’s actually supported by Neil gaiman??? This is all amazing.

If the leak is true, then I kinda hope so. Sounded like Strange was a side character in his own movie

@bkmeijer - what about this report indicates reshoots might change that?
bkmeijer2
bkmeijer2 - 11/13/2021, 5:23 AM
@ElricReturns - whatever the reshoots are for, I hope Strange is the main character in the final product. It's a risk with every Marvel movie being an ensemble, but it shouldn't be too hard

Honestly, they need to scrap most the Scarlet Witch stuff and push it into her own movie.

I read somewhere that if a significant amount of plot leaks, with ample time Feige will do reshoots to change it. I highly suspect that's true, and the reason these projects lately all get reshoots

@HydraB0b

This is really the only Marvel project that’s been reported to have extensive reshoots in a while.

@HydraB0b

Nothing in that article suggests they had up to six weeks of reshoots for No Way Home.
Spock0Clock
Spock0Clock - 11/13/2021, 12:21 AM
@McMurdo - It is a dumb thing to change a movie or TV show's plot because some of the story leaks online to a small portion of fans, that's true.

But it's apparently also true that many producers actually do this dumb thing.

I'm fairly engaged with the MCU stuff and I've not heard much in the way of Doctor Strange leaks. And if I haven't been spoiled, then 90% of the audience won't have been either.
GwenLantern
GwenLantern - 11/13/2021, 4:44 AM
@Spock0Clock - Sometimes I think the filmmakers place too much importance on surprising the audience with the story. I mean, look, SPOILERS: The good guys win at the end. It looks like they're not going to, when everything goes wrong at the end of Act 2, but then they pull it together by the end and win.

Spoiler for the very next superhero film you watch (whether new or old): Somebody's gonna punch somebody else in the face. Solid fact. No amount of reshoots will stop either of these things being true.

These are adaptations of existing comics and while it's true that the source material is vast and therefore requires more work to adapt as movies, it's still an adaptation.

We never get these concerns from filmmakers who are adapting great novels.

MotherFuckerJon
MotherFuckerJon - 11/13/2021, 11:11 AM
@regularmovieguy - I apologize I insert the wrong link. Point is, most all MCU films go through reshoots. There was an article that compiled a list of MCU films that have gone through reshoots.

I don't care enough to go back and find it. Just Google (insert MCU film) and reshoots.
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 11/13/2021, 11:15 AM
@HydraB0b

I never said they don’t go through reshoots. But these are more extensive than the typical pickups they do have.

That’s the whole point of the THR article.

Probably. Everyone is working so hard to spoil the movie with leaks and such, let alone popularity of characters shifting around...
kingjoeg
kingjoeg - 11/12/2021, 5:47 PM
Maybe the leaked the plot on purpose to gauge audience reaction, and now that people don't like what they're hearing Marvel are changing it up.

There was also a rumour recently that Tom Cruise was in talks for a Marvel role. A long time ago he was offered the role of Iron Man. Maybe he could be playing an Iron Man variant in the Multiverse of Madness.

Damn. Grace Randolph got shit on for reporting this first. She says that it tested poorly with Disney employees(since Disney seems to only screen test in house with Marvel) too and that's why it's getting significant reshoots.
