DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS Writer Explains How ALIENS Inspired The Scarlet Witch's Rampage

Talking about pitting the Scarlet Witch against The Illuminati in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, writer Michael Waldron reveals that James Cameron's Aliens was a key source of inspiration.

With Sam Raimi at the helm, no one was surprised to see Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness embrace horror, but did you know one of the greatest sci-fi movies of all time also played a role in what we saw play out in the Marvel Studios blockbuster? We are, of course, talking about James Cameron's Aliens, a sequel that also mixed its primary genre with a good dose of horror.

In an interview with Rolling Stone (via SFFGazette.com), writer Michael Waldron was asked about the Scarlet Witch's rampage - which sees her dispatch The Illuminati in a variety of gruesome ways - and cited Aliens as a key inspiration. He even goes so far as to compare the team to that movie's Marines!

"I was watching Aliens a lot as I was writing. Because just tonally this movie is a thriller and a [feature-length] chase. I just love how Aliens goes to great lengths to tell you how badass the space Marines are — and then they just get slaughtered," he explains. "Then you are really scared of the Xenomorphs for the rest of that movie, and that’s what I wanted to accomplish with Wanda."

"At the end of that Illuminati sequence. I hope you were truly terrified of the Scarlet Witch. It’s been awesome being in the theater hearing the cheers, then the gasps and the groans [Laughs]," Waldron continued. "I mean, you know, people were feeling something at the movies. That’s good!"

Looking back at that sequence, it's easy to see where the writer found inspiration in Aliens, and the Scarlet Witch was indeed every bit as terrifying as the Xenomorphs that tore through the Marines.

As for the Alien franchise itself, we know an FX series is in the works after Ridley Scott's divisive prequels fell by the wayside. Marvel Comics has also started publishing a comic book series starring the Xenomorphs, so sci-fi fans remain hopeful that we'll eventually see them back on the big screen.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is now playing in theaters!

I actually got Terminator vibes because of her relentlessness!

@Forthas - Same here! I was about to make the exact same comment. Plus, she's relentessly going after a girl that the co-protagonist has to protect so that's another coincidence

@Forthas - seeing how Aliens and Terminator or from James Cameron, I can why the inspiration is the same

That’s why I absolutely loved this movie, Scarlet Witch was a beast and I like how she was tearing through everything!!
Also what she says in the movie is very much true.
Strange and even some of the CBM audience are hypocritical, Loki killed a bunch of people in Avengers , as did Thanos, but everyone loves those villains and wants to see them back ? But no one is saying oh they should be redeemed or how are they going to make them pay?
I mean Thanos lost, but he deserved a way harder punishment for making billions suffer lol

Eh I don't know who would be scared with these movies. In aliens I know space Marines aren't coming back but with CBMs I know main character isn't dying. Anyone getting murdered doesn't matter because I know they will be back. It's like in infinity war as soon as anyone saw Spiderman, black panther getting dusted, they knew it's not going to be permanent.

I realised Thor and Wanda have same level of tragedy. I'll say Thor had worst of it because his friends & family dead, planet exploded, sister tried to murder, love is lost, he is trying to discover his place from last 3 movies but at least he isn't chasing imaginary things.

@MartianManHuntr -

Well yeah, everyone copes with stuff differently. Some healthily, others not so much lol

@MartianManHuntr - that's why I look forward to Love & Thunder so much. We can definitely expect something different with Taika at the helm

@bkmeijer1 - I was more hyped for strange sequel than Thor but I didn't like this movie. I'm not much excited about next Thor movie because of its villain. Gor is probably one and done character and I don't like such characters.
Still I'll agree it will be fun movie at least.

@MartianManHuntr - I don't mind it really. I think Gorr will have his own motives and goals, but from a moviemaking perspective I think he's also there to service Thor's arc.

This right here is why I believe the quality of writing in Hollywood has drastically declined over the years. Every movie or tv show scene is stolen from another older show or movie and then it's plagiarized and the writers claim "they were inspired by". Writers today there have no actual life experience besides being born into a well-off family, going to school while a teenager, then going directly into writing for the mega-corporations. Everything they know about the world is from other people's stories from the past or the corporate news stations.

@WarMonkey - does it matter though? Learning from what people did before you is way easier and faster than finding out yourself through trial and error

Doesn't just go for moviemakers either, as it also goes for advancing science. We know what works, so why spent time and money on things that don't?
WarMonkey

@bkmeijer1 - Yes it does. Cause right now we have the children of the children of the children of the people that actually did create and invent these ideas and methods that are being used today. They used the trial and error methods for knowledge and the evolution of visual storytelling. People today have seemed to have forgotten why those stories and scenes were used and created in the first place or where the ideas came from.

It's like the middle ages after the fall of Rome. People could find the old Roman structures but could not duplicate them or know why they were originally created for and how. So humanity went from indoor plumbing to shitting in buckets and dropping it out the window in a relatively short time.

Like for example, if a law drama is being created today the writers and everyone involved will have zero knowledge or experience in an actual courtroom or practicing law. They won't even hire a consultant anymore with knowledge. They write scenes and stories based on their knowledge of other shows and movies that were similar, not on personal experiences of the subjects they write about. Or take this newer Star Trek show Discovery as a great example. It has writers that literally do not understand some basic things in science, such as sound doesn't travel faster than light throughout space. We have sci-fi writers that don't know science writing Star Trek, that doesn't happen in an industry that is working on all cylinders with knowledgeable and experienced people in charge.

@WarMonkey - yeah those are some valid points.

As someone who has studied physics, I was so happy to read they brought on actual physicists for Endgame to get the rules of time travel right. So, I'm pretty bummed they're just falling back into those old habits of ''we just use the mechanics that fit the story'' with Loki and Multiverse of Madness.

Still, I wouldn't discredit everyone and everything though. There are still unique writers out there (Nolan being high on concept movies for example).

Was anyone afraid for Stephen Strange? No Way.

Also, their deaths were so ridiculous, that I burst out laughing rather than feeling shocked.

Showing the characters for 5 minutes, there's no possibility for me to care for them, so I didn't feel anything during their deaths.

The Smartest person on Earth uncovers his partners' secret weapon? Come on...

Also killing two of the most powerful heroes in 5 seconds and giving Carter a two-minute fight, yeah, I didn't like that.

The Illuminati here were a bunch of idiots, rather than the smartest heroes of the Universe.

I'm not a hater btw, I was just disappointed.
UXASIS
UXASIS - 5/13/2022, 3:59 PM
And Captain Carter and Captain Marvel definitely shouldn't be among the smartest heroes of Earth / Universe.

But yeah, I wonder why they were on the team.... (and they survived the longest).

(I hope nobody here finds my comment as sexist or hateful because I'm the exact opposite, I was just bored with this story writing decision).

T'Challa should have been a member, but sadly...

I saw way more Terminator than Alien.
