A Nightmare in Gotham: Part 2 – Fear of Darkness
Basic Story Outline
Previously...
It is revealed that Deathstroke has been working with, not for, Scarecrow. The rumors of a “Dream Master” have spread throughout the criminal underworld and things are not looking up for Batman. While Batman is continuing his investigation into the problem, Freddy is gaining strength. Also, Harvey Dent is missing because Freddy seemingly killed him in his sleep, but the criminals that are free do not know that. So consequently, Batman is now accused of killing him. Scarecrow is aware of the situation, but is more focused on Freddy for the time being.
Now, a small murmur of chaos is brewing in Gotham, and Freddy is gaining some influence with his criminal peers. Scarecrow has been using his resources to aid Deathstroke in an investigation to bring Freddy to light, but they do not yet know who they are dealing with. Scarecrow has his suspicions that they may be dealing with more than smoke and mirrors, but Deathstroke has seen things that he has not yet reported to Scarecrow.
A Flashback Scene
Deathstroke is handling a random thug.
“Tell me, have you seen The Dream Master?!”
“N-n-no!”
“Are you sure?!” Deathstroke asks forcefully again.
This time, the thug is sweating heavily and looks like he's going to pass out.
“Okay, okay, so I heard this one guy sayin' somethin' about a dream guy or some shtick. I--”
“Are you lying to me?!”
Deathstroke pulls a gun out and sticks it to the thug's temple.
“No no no no no no no--”
“Click.”
As the thug screams bloody murder, Deathstroke tosses him aside. The thug looks back at him in terror.
Deathstroke plainly asks him, “Where?”
The Flashback Scene ends.
In the next scene, we see Deathstroke and Scarecrow again, in Scarecrow's lair. Deathstroke is answering Scarecrow's question.
“Mr. Slade, have you found the Dream Master?”
Deathstroke does not reveal the incident with the lying thug, but answers, “No. I've found nothing, Crane.”
When Scarecrow swears under his breath, we can see the frustration on his face. We can see that Deathstroke, despite he is wearing a mask, is clearly hiding something.
Later the same night, we see Deathstroke standing in an alley. Surprisingly, we see now that Deathstroke was present when Batman defeated Two-Face. When Batman leaves with Two-Face in tow, Deathstroke is searching the thugs' possessions. He finds a cell phone, which he takes and searches through the text messages. He finds one that reads,
“Coolio, tell yo homeboyz we think we found Dream Master. Meet me Breeder St. @midnite wit sum help”
Deathstroke follows the text messages directions, although it is now later than midnight. Hiding in the shadows, Deathstroke sees whom the thug was supposed to meet standing near a street light. Deathstroke uses a rope contraption to wrangle the thug and pull him to the rooftop. Now holding the thug,
“So tell me, where is the Dream Master?”
“Yo what the flip are you?! Man what the hell?”
“Call me Coolio, homeboy. Now see, I’m gonna shove a sword up your ass if you don't tell me where the Dream Master is!”
“I don't know! We was supposed to go to some warehouse or some crap I don't know!”
Deathstroke is angered by the thug's idiotic response.
After an uncomfortable silence, he asks the thug again.
“Where.”
The viewpoint shows us the silhouettes in the darkness of Deathstroke holding the thug, and we see Deathstroke drop the thug. The thug lands in a bloody, mangled mess on the ground.
The next scene shows us Deathstroke standing on top of a building, overlooking a building that we are to assume is Two-Face's hideout. Deathstroke approaches the building, and instead of knocking on the door, he kicks it down. There is no bouncer or guard, so he walks right in. After some creepy atmosphere, it seems like the thug's information may have been a lemon. However, he sees one last door at the end of a hallway. Upon its open, he finds one masked man sitting in a chair, clothed in a black hockey mask and a black robe.
“Well, if isn't this interesting. A masked man in Gotham. From the look of you, I say you're no hero....Dream Master.”
Freddy sits up, and stares Deathstroke in the eyes. His stare is cold, and silent.
“Well, say something.”
But Freddy says nothing. Deathstroke pulls out his sword, and approaches Freddy. As he gets closer, he sees that Freddy is doing nothing more than sitting still and staring at him. Suddenly, he notices that Freddy seems to not be moving at all. Actually, he has been quite still the entire time. Deathstroke puts his sword tip to Freddy's chin.
“Let's take off that mask.”
He flicks his sword, and the mask comes off. It is not Freddy under the mask, but Deathstroke's first wife, Adeline Kane, who died because of a muddled conspiracy.
We can instantly see the trouble in Deathstroke's eyes.
“......Adeline...”
The scenery begins to melt around him, and Adeline's face becomes a rotten corpse.
“Noooooo” Deathstroke screams as he grabs Adeline's face. Her corpse falls to ash, and Freddy is heard laughing like a God in the sky.
“I've got you now Slade!” Freddy cackles from nowhere.
Suddenly we see Scarecrow holding Deathstroke in his arms. He is standing in front of Freddy, as he sits on his altar.
“I have him here my lord.”
He sits Deathstroke at Freddy's feet.
“Thanks Jonathan.”
“Mr. Wilson was hot on your trail, so I gassed him with an advanced serum, tailored to his genetics. It was a lengthy process. I knew he was lying to me when he said he had not heard of your whereabouts. I have spies everywhere, and they told me that he found this place but decided not to go in. Perhaps Mr. Wilson here was afraid....”
It seems to us now that Deathstroke had been dreaming all that we saw him doing, and the dream was being manipulated by Freddy.
The next shot we see is Scarecrow, down on one knee at Freddy's feet.
“Dream Master, teach me how you make them fear you. Fear is my one true love.”
He bows his head to Freddy, and Freddy lifts his chin with his claw gently as to not scratch Scarecrow's mask.
“We see Crane's eyes within the mask. He looks pitiful, and his eyes are begging Freddy for power, like a hungry dog. His eyes change to an expression of bewilderment, and the scene ends before we see what happens.
