What I Would Like To See In 'Batman: Arkham 3'

An Editorial Of What I Think We Should See In The Next Batman Arkham Game...

For those who have not yet heard, the next chapter in the Batman Arkham video game series is a confirmed prequel, set to center around Batman's first encounter with The Joker in the Silver Age, as well as Batman joining the Justice League for the first time. The next game will also be slightly less darker than Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. The following is a list of what I think we should see in the next game.

THE GAME NEEDS TO BE A TRUE PREQUEL:

This game needs to stay in continuity with the Arkham games. If this game is going to have a lighter, Silver Age feel, it needs to set up what would make them grow dark in the future. What did Joker do in their first few encounters that would lead to this long rivalry? What would make Dick Grayson want to quite as Robin in the future? What was Arkham like decades before the events of the previous two games? Of course, unlike the previous two games, this prequel should not be set completely in Arkham.

The gadgets should also be less advanced, but similar to the ones in the last two games. But not too primitive. If this game is in the Silver Age, it should at least hint at Robin disliking how Batman is "treating him like a kid," however, it shouldn't take place at the time of the break-up. Robin should still be very young. It would also be nice to see Barbara Gordon as Batgirl rather than Oracle.

RIDDLER CHALLENGES:

Considering this takes place in the early days of Batman, this would be the perfect chance to show Batman's first encounter with The Riddler. It would be cool saving Riddler's hostages, collecting his trophies, and solving his riddles for the first time. It was great solving the Riddler Conundrum side mission in Arkham City, solving a little bit of the challenges at a time, saving one hostage after another until finally reaching Riddler himself. It gave me plenty to do after completing the game. I would love to have them have another Riddler Conundrum side mission, and would be happy to see what they could add to it, especially with it being Batman's first encounter with Riddler. My one complaint is, in Arkham City, there was 440 Riddler challenges total, and after completing 400, you could go after and capture Riddler. I expected something to happen after completing the last 40, but all I got was an achievement. Hopefully they'll fix that in the next game.

VEHICLES/FREE ROAM:

Wouldn't it be awesome to be able to actually drive the Batmobile in the next game? It will probably be an Adam West type Batmobile but it's better than nothing. And when it comes to free roam, they need to go bigger. Instead of just a section of Gotham, we should be able to roam the entirety of Gotham. And the section that we played through in Arkham City should be more primitive, and feel like a completely new environment, but we should still be able to tell that its the same area.

SKINS:

Most Batman: Arkham City fans know about the selection of alternate skins playable through download. I feel that if this is a Silver Age game, there should be some Silver Age skins such as a Adam West skin, a Brave And The Bold skin, a Zebra Batman skin or Rainbow Batman skins. I also don't think a Modern Age Christian Bale or New 52 skin would hurt.

MOST OF THE VILLAINS SHOULD BE FROM THE SILVER AGE:

The villains should fit the timeline. Some villains from that time include Killer Moth, Egg Head (60's TV Series), King Tut (60's TV Series), Mad Hatter Imposter, and younger versions of Scarecrow, Riddler, Penguin, and Mr. Freeze. The Mad Hatter Imposter would make a good side mission, discovering it's not the real Jervis Tetch and all. And it would be interesting if they retconned the old comics and have Mr. Freeze start off calling himself Mr. Zero.

FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH THE JOKER:

I am interested in what they will do with Batman's first encounter with The Joker. If they're going to go into Joker's origin, hopefully they use Joker's "multiple choice" and have us decide for ourselves how he came to be. I wonder if their going to go into him being the Red Hood and forshadow Jason Todd, despite this taking place in the Silver Age, years before Jason Todd became Robin.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST...

This should be BATMAN'S story, not the Justice Leagues. This should be about Batman, and about how HE joined the JLA, and HIS first encounter with Joker. Does that mean the JLA can't be playable characters or have a major role in the story? No, but this needs to be mainly about Batman. Also, this game needs to be for the fans and not just some way to make a bunch of money because a Justice League film has been announced. Do I expect this to be better than Arkham City? No. But as a fan, I expect them to at least try. Hopefully this game will surprise us all. What do you think about the announced Batman: Arkham City prequel? What would you like to see included in it? I will be happy to read your comments below.

Welcome, I am Darkknight2149. I am primarily a fan of comic books and their various adaptations, as well as horror and other classic film franchises.

As far as the "DC vs. Marvel" rivalry goes, I'm really not biased when it comes to studios and publishers. Preferences are fine, but I've never understood the basing of opinions purely by the studio/publisher that makes it.

No it isn't. It's a rumor, not confirmed at all.

Some really nice toughts. I love the idea of playing in Arkham City without it being a prison yet, they can also add Arkham Island for some Batman TAS- style missions. That of course would require a Batmobile, so if they want to use it, I want the TAS Batmobile, not the Adam West version. Tough I can't wait for a sequel to Arkham City, I would love any Batgame Rocksteady would throw at us

It should start off with a brief tutorial that involves Batman chasing the Red Hood through Ace Chemicals. You could hit all the basics: fight a few goons while he runs away, pursue him while swinging across gargoyles, use the environment to put him on edge. At the end of the intro/prologue/tutorial, Batman will accidentally knock Red Hood into the chemicals (because he's young, sloppy, and inexperienced), and the police will arrived on the scene, causing Batman to flee. In this way, Batman is -directly- responsible for the Joker's creation, giving a bit more depth as to Batman's guilt over SPOILERS the Joker dying in Arkham City, as well as the yin/yang connection between the two across the games.

I think it'd set the tone/story for the game, as well as the series, pretty well.

I wouldn't over think the prequel aspect of this game. Revealing the Falcone/Scarecrow easter egg plot may be "prequel" enough.

I'm can't say I'm sold on ANY JL connections but I'm certainly against your skins variables. [frick] no do I want to play as ZEBRA skinned Batman!

As for driving, nah, I like the grapple/glide feature.

If they follow the formula of Lego Batman 2 then they will have gotten the amount of Justice League participation correct.

You're right, this is Batman's game first and foremost. 3/4 of it should be all Batman with maybe some appearances of JLA members here and there, but don't get them fully involved until the shiz really hits the fan on the last 1/4 of the game.

If they want to make a game with the JLA, then just make a [frick]ing JLA game already...

I really hope they decide against a prequel, mainly because they've set up so many things to be resolved in a sequel (e.g. Hush, Scarecrow, Azrael, etc.), plus, I hate the idea of them revisiting Batman's first encounter with the Joker since Mark Hamill has quit voicing the character.
Also, I can't imagine how the Justice League would fit in to this game, they're all so over-powered compared to Batman that I just can't see it working out in that universe, I always got the feeling in those games that while there were some fantastical elements, it was still too realistic for other superheroes, unless they were reimagined and toned down.

@ACira I hope they decide against a prequel, also. I totally agree. But, as of now, sources are reporting that it's going the prequel route. And if it does, hopefully, they'll at least complete the Azreal, Hush, Scarecrow, ETC stories with DLC's.

Killing off the Joker was a [frick]ing stupid idea.

Now just to continue incorporating him in, they're gonna be making prequels, and sequels to prequels, prequels to the prequels, prequels to the sequels of the prequels. and on and on.

Long term thinking was absent in whoever wrote that in.

great article. Rocksteady would be fools to not at least consider all of these ideas. you seem to have a good handle on how every character should be treated, very balanced with the focal being batman. perfect. here's a few of my ideas based on your article:

i think one of the, if not the first, missions in the game should be the origin of the joker, the ace chemicals accident. you're right to think they should include the red hood. i like your "multiple choice" suggestion but this chemical origin is universally accepted as "yeah it's ok if it happens like that." this is the one origin you can do without causing much of a fuss with fans. plus i think it's a great way to start the game.

free roam/batmobile: i do agree that the sandboxes should be bigger, sandboxes meaning plural. we should be set mainly in gotham but they should map out a metropolis section equal in size to gotham. then, if you wanted to incorporate the batmobile you can do it with extra side missions that are separate from the actual gameplay map. they would be special corses with missions built around driving in the batmobile. maybe each time you wanted to travel from metropolis to gotham you had to get in the batmobile and "drive there" but it would really just be completing a car challenge/mission.

Playable charaters:
Batman
Robin (dick)
Batgirl
Superman
-(Superman would fill the catwoman role from arkham city. only have 4 or 5 missions, a different set of moves and different animations. don't tell me you dont want some superman challenge rooms;))

@lokibane2012 Joker could still be alive. Of course, he could be dead, as the game wants you to believe, but they do hint that he might be alive.

I like both of your Red Hood ideas. I know in the late Golden Age, early Silver Age, when the Red Hood origin was first used, instead of having Red Hood accidentally fall into the chemicals, he was a criminal who would still money with a goal of reaching $1 million. Right after reaching this goal, Batman and Robin (Dick Grayson) chase Red Hood into a chemical plant. Rather than accidentally falling into the chemicals, he jumps into the chemicals to escape Batman and Robin. Years later, Batman and Robin find evidence that Red Hood might still be alive, and its a mystery as to who the Red Hood is. At the end of the comic, they discover Joker, who had been their enemy since 1940, in the Golden Age, was the Red Hood. He hopped into the chemicals because his "Red Hood" that he was wearing protects him from chemicals. However, although it protected him from death, the chemicals had somehow had an affect on his skin and hair, giving him the appearance of a clown. He stopped being Red Hood, due to reaching his $1 million goal, and became Joker. If they decide to use the Red Hood origin in the game, they could use this version of the origin if they want to make this a true Silver Age game. Or they could use the version most people are used to: Red Hood accidentally falling into the chemicals with no protection and, rather than killing him, the chemicals give him a clown appearance. Of course, that's if they use the Red Hood origin at all.

You got some good ideas. I hope the prequel thing isn't correct. Just add the JL in the next game. From Azreal's warning it is going to be a giant threat.

I'm so sad that this new game is supposed to be a prequel. The Justice League is so lame.
I also felt like there were so many hints in the arkham games that were leading towards a new leading villain. Scarecrow (hand coming out of the water in Asylum, and the scary boat in City), or Hush, or even the League of shadows. I will be extremely disappointed if they don't eventually make a continuation

We need:

1. To be able to fly the batwing, drive the batmobile and roam Gotham. (could Rocksteady combine their classic Arkham style with GTA and Burnout?)

2. To be able to replay levels/ see cutaway scenes again and again.

3. Playability as the Joker, drive the joker's van etc.

4. ManBat - and all the mid-air conflict that might entail.

5. Batgirl as a playable character.

6. Man of Steel cameo.
