What we NEED in a CROW reboot

What we NEED in a CROW reboot

If they must reboot the Crow franchise... let's have something new but still true to James O'barr...
This article is both a Fan cast and a film pitch.

Ok. We have suffered through some horrible Crow films. So at hearing about a reboot I think we all both shuttered with fear and excitement. Let’s face it. No one will ever live up to Brandon Lee’s portrayal of Eric Draven. So why try? Why not look into the deep and wide flow of creativity that has made the Crow a staple in many of our collections.
Which brings us to The Crow: Flesh and Blood. For those unfamiliar with this excellent Crow story let me set the stage…

Iris Shaw (a strong female character) was a marshal for the Bureau of Land Management. She was investigating illegal dumping on federal land by Ray Henderson and his lackeys. She ends up being the victim of a bomb Ray Henderson plants to “teach her a lesson”. Iris isn’t the only victim, three other innocents are killed in the blast. But what brings the Crow to her is the unknown victim… the child that she was carrying in her womb.
This is not only a phenomenal set up for a film but it treads new ground that has yet to be seen in a Crow movie adaption while returning to the gritty, dark and violent feel of the first Crow movie that we all know and loved.
So, the big question is; Who should play Iris? Who is strong enough to pull off a female Crow? Who can be “Dark” enough to make it believable?
Well here’s my answer:

With Janssen's Portrayal of Dark Phoenix in X3 she could definitely pull off this character without any hesitation. She also has a mysterious quality that hasn't been seen in a Crow character since the original.

However, finding a suitable crow is only half the battle. Let's face it, 80% of the problems with the Crow films have been the lack of cool and believable Villains. Not since the original has there been villains that really intimidated (Just watch David Boreanaz in "wicked Prayer if you aren't following me here). So let's look at who needs to fill the evil roles...

There are two main villains in Flesh and Blood. First you have Willis...

Hutchison has a quality that can come across as irritating (Green Mile)as well as absolutely viscous (Punisher; Warzone) both of which will be necessary to pull off the role of Willis.

And of course we have the man; Ray Henderson himself...

Ben Foster could play the Shark in jaws! If it has a dark side, he's the man for the job. This guy could give the Crow a run for her money!

There are plenty of other characters that need to be fleshed out but I wanted to hit the main three in this article. Here's to hoping for a great Crow reboot! In the meantime pick up The Crow: Flesh and Blood for a great read.

Till next time!

I agree with you Anil@! Completely and utterly!
The 1st Proyas picture is perfect!

By the way I knew James O'barr personally but haven't
heard from in for a long, long time! He's
probably forgotten all about me but how can anyone
improve on Proyas' perfection! That was Jim's vision
for the character! Leave it alone!

Jim wrote and drew THE CROW because of the death
of his fiance! It's more than just a story! I used
to be part owner of a comic shop and met him and became
friendly with him cuz my mother had died of a heart attack
at a younger age and I could relate and
I love good comics and graphic novels.

To just keep making bad remakes and bad TV shows is wrong,
people should honor the first movie and Proyas' perfection!
Just let the perfect comic and movie REST IN PEACE! Every
thing else is a pale copy at best!

But this is an OK idea you have here, I just think
THE CROW should be laid to rest! Please don't make
a remake Hollyweerd!

ANIL @ It wouldn't be a reboot IF it was the female CROW WTF???

I've read a lot of CROW comics and theres lots of rich histories of the characters!!!

Gotta say HELL NO EVER to a remake of the classic CROW, but I'm all for another CROW movie or two!

Awesome series, needs exploring further and get that bad taste of WICKED PRAYER outta our mouths!

: D

Good work @ WOOD!

I think that Heath Ledger could have been a great Crow but unfortunately he passed away too soon another good choice is Cilllian Murphy he would be a great Crow. Hopefully this new movie isn't like the one with Edward Furlong that movie sucked bad.

ANIL @ Clearly you've NEVER read any CROW comics just seen the movie LOL!

Hamm3rtym3 @ I know that LOL. i mean't from the ages!

(From Top Cow history)

; P

ANIL @ I would LOVE to see a SPIDEY 2099 movie a billion times more than a [frick]ing pile of sh1t we're getting with Webbs reboot! : D

Yes ERIC DRAVEN is the best (and always will be), but thats like saying lets not do anymore SUPERHERO team movies because JLA and AVENGERS are the best!

I can't wait for more CROW films, loved CROW 3 too, bring it on!!!

Yeah CROW 4 sucked ass! : D

Leee777: Agreed. I also dug Crow 3... had a neat twist. I just wish it had a budget bigger than $5.

As far as whether this idea would be a reboot or a fifth film... A reboot isn't (always) a retelling of the first film. i.e. I don't remember The Scarecrow in Burton's Batman but magically he was in the Nolan Reboot. A reboot simply means to update an older series.

Say what you want but I think a female Crow is the way to go. I think audiences are tired of seeing the same long haired Rocker dude as the Crow (yet another reason that the 3rd Crow was good.)

I also don't see anyone (Heath Ledger included) that could live up to our expectations of Brandon Lee's Eric Draven... so why try.

P.S. Aside from Anti-Reboot Venom... What do you guys think of the Casting?

Ranger14 - 6/16/2010, 11:34 PM
I'm with Anil and DDD on this one. Can't really comment on the casting as I am not really familiar with the female Crow.
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 6/17/2010, 2:49 AM
Woodinator @ Yeah man, they did wonders with the budget they had for CROW 3, hats off to them for that one!!

Castings cool by the way bud and yes your right a female CROW is the way to go, it'll give Joe public a fresh change and take on it!

Saying that, of course only if HOLLYWOOD uses the comic book character version (your IRIS SHAW pick) and not their own HOLLYWOOD take lame version like they did with CATWOMAN! : P
Woodinator
Woodinator - 6/17/2010, 4:50 AM
@LEEE777 - Eww, You said "Catwoman" on this thread. I must now go and consider burning it. LOL

@Hamm3rtym3 - Ellen Page... No way. I had considered Kristen Stewart, but I refuse to cast her due do her fascination with sparkly Vampires.

Woodinator
Woodinator - 6/17/2010, 4:54 AM
@Hamm3rtym3 - I don't think it's type casting to consider that an actress can pull off a role because of a past role. Why else would you choose an actress than because you have seen her succeed in that situation before?

i.e. - I would never cast Johnny Knoxville to play Constantine... because he's never played a role that leads me to believe he could be successful at it. (And because he's an idiot)
DDD
DDD - 6/17/2010, 10:30 AM
Woodinator@ I am not diametrically opposed to a female
Crow movie but I don't want Eric Draven Crow to be
remade/rebooted! Let Brandon's performance and demise rest-in-peace.

This is not a terrible casting, in some ways it's quite
good! But Hollywood please leave the original alone! I
don't see anybody coming near Proyas' version except
Proyas!
LEEE777
LEEE777 - 6/17/2010, 10:46 AM
WOOD @ LOL! : P

DDD @ No one wants ERIC DRAVEN rebooted or remade?

I'm dead set against that too!
DDD
DDD - 6/17/2010, 10:52 AM
Leee@ yeah,I knew Jim O'Barr! I met him cuz
I was part owner in a comic shoppe in my local
area for awhile. I have a signed Crow #1. I'm not
sure what it's worth now but I would never sell
it ever! It's quite precious to me!

I also have a signed Crow graphic novel. Jim
is a quite regular guy, not aloof.

I also was pretty good pals with Drew Hayes
of Poison Elves fame. He used to show me inkings
of his pencil's pages and I used to laugh about
how graphic all the blood was. He made the comic
a black & white because when he showed his colored
versions to the distributor the blood was extremely gory
and they didn't like it! I've seen the colored pages and
man Drew could draw graphic bloody good
stuff! Too bad he passed away! I would have loved
to see some more from him!

His Lucipher the Elf began as his Dungeon & Dragons guy! I
played D&G with him some times.

I'm not just name dropping, just knew these guys,
They are & were quite regular type people.

Damm cool stuff!

I liked Poison Elves but I'm really into
Sword & Sorcery type material! That's why I

the master!
