Ok. We have suffered through some horrible Crow films. So at hearing about a reboot I think we all both shuttered with fear and excitement. Let’s face it. No one will ever live up to Brandon Lee’s portrayal of Eric Draven. So why try? Why not look into the deep and wide flow of creativity that has made the Crow a staple in many of our collections.
Which brings us to The Crow: Flesh and Blood. For those unfamiliar with this excellent Crow story let me set the stage…
Iris Shaw (a strong female character) was a marshal for the Bureau of Land Management. She was investigating illegal dumping on federal land by Ray Henderson and his lackeys. She ends up being the victim of a bomb Ray Henderson plants to “teach her a lesson”. Iris isn’t the only victim, three other innocents are killed in the blast. But what brings the Crow to her is the unknown victim… the child that she was carrying in her womb.
This is not only a phenomenal set up for a film but it treads new ground that has yet to be seen in a Crow movie adaption while returning to the gritty, dark and violent feel of the first Crow movie that we all know and loved.
So, the big question is; Who should play Iris? Who is strong enough to pull off a female Crow? Who can be “Dark” enough to make it believable?
Well here’s my answer:
With Janssen's Portrayal of Dark Phoenix in X3 she could definitely pull off this character without any hesitation. She also has a mysterious quality that hasn't been seen in a Crow character since the original.
However, finding a suitable crow is only half the battle. Let's face it, 80% of the problems with the Crow films have been the lack of cool and believable Villains. Not since the original has there been villains that really intimidated (Just watch David Boreanaz in "wicked Prayer if you aren't following me here). So let's look at who needs to fill the evil roles...
There are two main villains in Flesh and Blood. First you have Willis...
Hutchison has a quality that can come across as irritating (Green Mile)as well as absolutely viscous (Punisher; Warzone) both of which will be necessary to pull off the role of Willis.
And of course we have the man; Ray Henderson himself...
Ben Foster could play the Shark in jaws! If it has a dark side, he's the man for the job. This guy could give the Crow a run for her money!
There are plenty of other characters that need to be fleshed out but I wanted to hit the main three in this article. Here's to hoping for a great Crow reboot! In the meantime pick up The Crow: Flesh and Blood for a great read.
Till next time!
