Why I Think DC Needs To Step Up Their Game If They Want To Be As Successful As Marvel

My opinion on why Marvel is more popualar with the general public than DC

Everything below is my opinion, if you don't agree with it don't comment, and no this is not a Marvel vs. DC

Yes, almost every kid knows who Batman and Superman are, but what about Green Arrow, or even the Flash. Compared to Marvel, DC just isn't as popular with the up and coming generations and that could hurt them drastically in the future.

TOYS and CLOTHES

Marvel has 5 toy lines out right now, in a 100 mile radius of where I live all I see are Green Lantern toys (and lots of them). Clothing lines Marvel have dozens of shirts compared to DC's maybe 10 and the 5 Green Lantern shirts. Marvel items are also now at the Disney Store, which brings in another group of people.

TELEVISION

My point here is Marvel tends to have more shows on different channels from G4, to Disney XD, to Nicktoons, to Cartoon Network. While DC has a lot less shows on different channels such as Hub, Cartoon Network, and Boomerang, and the majority of their shows still are about or star Batman and Superman related characters (i.e. Robin and Superboy are the main in Young Justice and Batman and Superman still appear in almost half the episodes). In my opinion DC should have at least have one more current show playing starring maybe Flash, or someone else major and unused before (in a self-titled show).

MOVIES (movies from 2004 and up, animated ones included) :

Marvel:

The Punisher
Spider-Man 2
Blade: Trinity

Men In Black 3 (2012)
The Wolverine (2012?)

The Dark Knight
Watchmen
Jonah Hex
Green Lantern
A History of Violence
Constantine
V for Vendetta
The Fountain
Stardust
The Losers
Superman: Doomsday

Batman: Gotham Knight
Wonder Woman
Tales of the Black Freighter
Green Lantern: First Flight
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies

Justice League: Doom (2012)
The Dark Knight Returns (2012?)
The Man of Steel (2013)

Marvel has had 27 films and DC has had 25, but compared as live-action to animated Marvel has only had 8 animated films leaving them with 19 live-action films while DC has had 12 animated films and 13 live-action films. Now just for fun lets see how many of DC's (both released and upcoming films from 2004 and up) star Batman and Superman= 14 films.

In coclusion I feel that DC should do better to release less Batman and Superman films and instead release different characters, like Marvel has with X-Men, Fantastic Four, 4 different Avengers films with a total of 7 different heroes, Blade, Ghost Rider, etc.

COMICS:

Now comics is almost a different matter all together, its hard to compare the comics, both have a lot of major-crossover events like the currents Flashpoint and Fear Itself, but just yesterday Marvel released a statement saying that for 50 ripped off covers of first edition Flaspoint covers they will give comic book retailers a limited (underwhelming) Fear Itself #6 variant cover and a discount on all Marvel comics purchases in the future. Now it could be just me or does it sound like Marvel is saying 50 DC comics are only worth one Marvel comic? And of course DC is doing the whole comics reboot....again.

For the rest of this section I will have a poll asking who you think puts out the better Marvel or DC.

Now in my opinion DC needs to stay away from Batman and Superman a little more and release their other characters and properties if they want to beat Marvel like they used to, they need to release more merchandising if they want a younger fan base for the future, and they need to stop rebooting their comics once and for all.

The picture below the heading shows exactly why Marvel is doing better than DC. It's a damn shame because DC has arguably some of the most iconic characters and storylines. Marvel is an ever expanding universe. DC is a closed universe. One that thinks it perfect the way it is. DC has shown us the same shit [Batman & Superman] for years now, they need to bring their other characters to life. They are like [frick]ing old people. @Armageddon26 Good write up. Beware of Marvel/DC bigot storm.

@NathanDrake - "plus Marvel is good... DC could try that." That's Frickin HILARIOUS!!! But it also happens to be true.

I'm a neutral fanboy, but Batman and Superman are my favorite heroes by far. Its like DC/WB is worried most about being profitable, so they don't take risks with their lower tier characters and then get no exposure. Instead we get Batman and Supes over and over again. And when they finally tried Green Lantern, everyone and their mother at WB stuck their hand in instead of letting Martin Cambell do his thing because they were too scared to risk and it came out horrible.

Marvel know that if the product is good, then it will be profitable. Also, Marvel sold the movie right to Sony and Fox and let them assume some of the risk with other characters whereas WB assumes the risk for the whole of DC. Sony took a risk on Spiderman, Marvel profited... Fox took the risk on X-men, Marvel profited. Whether those movies were successful or not it was a ton of exposure for Marvel's characters. Then Marvel sells more comics, get more cartoons, etc...

WB not even DC, wants all control because they assume all the risk because they want all the money... So you get comics and movies basically dictated by businessmen and shareholders instead being controlled by creators, artist and storytellers. Its about what the higher-ups think will sell, not what is good...

MoonDoggyX
MoonDoggyX - 7/27/2011, 10:52 AM
@Intruder - DC is better at animation because Batman and Superman are the best heroes around... and DC only does Batman and Superman animated films... lol

But even on television, the Bruce Timm cartoons(Batman, Superman, JL, JLU, BatBeyond) blows anything marvel did out of the water... The only one that was close was Fox's X-Men cartoon in the early 90's

ENOUGH With the MARVEL vs DC. BS!!!
Dont people have better things to write about?
Seriously, I can't even log in nowadays without running into a marvel/DC article

Its [frick]ing annoying! DC fans shitting on marvel and Marvel doing the same.

It's actually doing more harm than good for the Comic Book community!
All it does is divide fans, under the false illusion that they HAVE to side with one company...

Articles like this encourage this bullshit....
Both companies have strengths and weaknesses.
Why do we have to keep comparing two companies who's goals are to contfibute to the comic book industry?

you might say that this isnt a marvel vs DC article, but just comparing them like that will start another debate.
It's not DC's Fault, Warner Bros. owns them, so if DC hasn't had as much success as Marvel, it's because of them
Marvel joined Disney, and Disney gives them freedom.
DC should ask for more freedom from Warner Bros

This is lame.

@Armageddon26- You claim this isn't meant to be a DC/Marvel war type of article yet you put up a picture right under the headline that clearly gives the Marvel fans a way to attack DC fans. And what type of comments do we get here?

Nothing but haterism against DC.

@Superman17- Agreed dude. These comicbook wars have to stop eventually.

Minotauro

@Armageddon - Either you're wanting attention, or you're just another "marvel tool". Intruder and Marvel72 are clear examples of this.

DC has been doing well for the past decade in both animation and movies. Yet most of the marvel fanboys on this site can't seem to see the truth in front of their face. Marvel has made more bad films than good ones. While DC has made less bads films than marvel. And this is an objective opinion. I'll run through this again.

Good films by marvel
Spiderman 1 & 2
Ironman
Blade 1 & 2
Thor
Captain America
Kick Ass

Good films by DC
Superman 1 & 2
Batman 89 & 92
Batman Begins
History of Violence
V for Vendetta
Watcmen
Dark Knight
Dark Knight Rises

Year by year
2000: X-men > No DC films that year
2001: In Hell >No Marvel films that year
2002: Spiderman > No DC films that year
2003: Daredevil/X2/Hulk > League of Gentlemen
2004: Spiderman 2/Punisher > No DC Films that year
2005: Batman Begins/History of Violence > Fantastic Four
2006: V for Vendetta/Superman Returns > X3
2007: Spiderman 3/FF:SS/Ghost Rider > No DC films that year
2008: TDK > Ironman/Punisher Warzone/Hulk
2009: Watcmen > Wolverine Origins
2010: Ironman 2/Kickass > Johnah Hex(why this film is made is beyond anbody)
2011: Thor/XMFC/Cap > GL

So by this the past two years Marvel is only up a little. Seems like Marvel ain't winning at anything. Sorry marvel fanboys but these are the facts.

Minotauro break that down to each companies top characters:

Marvel:
Iron Man
Thor
Hulk
Captain America
X-Men
Spiderman

DC:
Superman
Batman
Green Lantern
Watchmen
Instead my making crap like Jonah Hex, League of Extraodinary Gentlemen, The Losers DC could have made a Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Arrow and Captain Marvel films by now.

Even though superman is my favorite super hero of all time it pains me to say this but superman can't carry DC by himself whenever I watch old marvel cartoons its like watching an off shoot of the avengers because there always other marvel characters showing up I.e I could be watch spiderman and see the punisher or Iron man and see the hulk ect. But when I watch superman I see batman and when I watch batman I see superman and when I watch Justice leage I see the both of them and what I think DC is hoping for is that marvel over uses their charagter's and people get fed up with it but untill that happens DC will continue to get their asses handed to them

i'm a "marvel tool" well you're a nolan butt plug.dc fans have got to admit that the only thing that you are superior to marvel is animation fact.

what are you gonna tell that nolans batman's are the most sucessful cbm ever because one of them just scrapped past the billion mark?

the first two spider-man films have out grossed the first two nolan batmans.

spider-man & spider-man 2 $1,605,474,892

batman begins & the dark knight $1,373,775,608

if you add spider-man 3 $890,871,626 to the first two total it comes to an "amazing" $2,496,346,518.that means the dark knight rises would have to make over $1,123,431,110.

i don't think,so spidey wins for marvel.i suppose you're gonna comeback with they're better written you're right they are but its all about the almighty dollar.

DC comics has some gay ass characters but hey so does marvel

Enough with the comparison.
@Marvel72, you are obviously biased, but I respect the fact that you are willing ti admit that Nolan films are better. So I guess you're one of the few Marvel fans that arent blind to anything other companies have to offer

Everyone has their own opinion, I love the spidey films, Im rooting for the Avengers AND TDKR, we all should just step back and see the picture as a whole. These comoanies are just contributing to the comic book industry we all know and love.
Im proud to say that Im not tied down to a single company.

Yes I love Marvel, but I defend DC against the haters any day of the week

i do think the nolan films are well written, but i do prefer spider-man 2 over batman begins & the dark knight.

i think they're good but not as great as some would like to think,i suppose it all comes down to personal taste.

Im all for competition. if you're a marvel fanboy..sound off like you got a pair. if you're a dc diehard then let everyone know who runs the show. it drives creativity, it helps keep ideas fresh and moving forward.
what i don't like is when people hope movies bomb based on their publisher. lets face it, the comic fans like us can decipher between the marvel flicks and dc flicks..but the people who are gonna keep the genre alive are the average movie goers. they just see capes and super powers. if superman bombs, they arent gonna care about the next xmen flick. yes there have been bombs in the past, but it's not gonna take too many more before people just give up on the films and we are left with fan films and animated films (which dc has kicked alot of ass with).
long story short, i dig comic books..marvel, dc, image, idw, dark horse, whatever..a good story is a good story. as far as the movies go, marvel has impressed me with the sprawling continuity it's built with its movies. dc seems to take the nolan road and make it more 'realistic' which may work for them. DC needs to do what works for them. Batman can rock the realism, but i dont know about superman..the word of the day in metropolis should be 'EPIC'. Green Lantern missed that day at school i guess (i was looking for a space adventure with that film..too much Earth bound filler).
Minotauro

@Teabag - I was unaware that money had anything to do with the success of a film in my list. In fact, when does money mean any movie has success on that alone. Reviews are what matter the most. GL, and Jonah Hex don't have those sure, but the rest from 05 - 09 are pretty good.

@Intruder - Did I mention christian bale anywhere in my comment. [frick]ing dipshit.

@Marvel72 - You've had your unpopular opinions before about DC. But the almight dollar shouldn't be put up on a pedistol for success in a CBM. It's helps, but should'nt.

nah, but seriously
DC is older. way back when the idea of an indestructible man fighting off the baddies would be way more appealing then a small kid from queens in a full body suit, but as time has progressed so has our taste. we like an every man with problems, because it makes for better story telling. yes i'm openly saying marvel does a better job at story telling attack me. DC laid the ground work for superhero and should be commended for it, but marvel does a better job with it in the modern day. as for animation DC obviously wins that. DC animations capture something that there movies don't....what is it? being good right. TDK is not all it's hyped up to be. when i walked out of the theater i was really surprised to see the comic book community liking it. Marvel does better with movies. not to say it doesn't fail from time to time. i mean just look at Elektra... but at least we didn't make Green Lantern.

MoonDoggyX
MoonDoggyX - 7/28/2011, 5:19 AM
@teabag - u are the man!

@mino - critical acclaim doesn't equal success. At the same time critical damnation does not mean failure... Transformers is the perfect example of that. Really, I gotta say, that makes the most sense to me too. Whether a movie is good or bad is just ur opinion, and opinions are like butt-holes, everyones got one and no 2 are exactly alike. NO MOVIE WILL EVER BE ABLE TO PLEASE EVERYONE. So success is judged by how many people are willing to by tickets to see the film in relation to the size of its budget.

@marvel72 - now there's no need for any transformers bashing on here... lol... let's keep this civilized...

Well here is my take on the whole thing I am a marvel guy but i like DC and put the BS aside and make a good damm movie. TDK is the bomb that’s TRUTH RUTH! The question is how long that can last, especially with Marvel doing different characters. I liked GL just sorry they jacked it up this could have been the start of good things for DC. Right now all DC has is BATS and Superman and no JLA. Now even Supes is delayed. DC has to do a tie in sooner or later just because Marvel is doing it and having great success. Captain America is a very good movie the teaser at the end blew us all away. When the AVENGERS hit next year DC better have a plan and it better involve Superman fighting somebody to save something. Here is a thought; WB let somebody do a DC movie who knows what the hell they are doing.
