RED SONJA Movie Finds New Writers In TOMB RAIDER Showrunner Tasha Huo And Director Joey Soloway

The Hollywood Reporter reveals that work is finally heating up on Red Sonja, as Millennium has turned to Tasha Huo to pen the movie's screenplay. She's set to write the script alongside recently announced director Joey Soloway, and is considered to be something of a rising star in Hollywood.

Netflix recently tapped Huo to serve as showrunner and executive producer on the animated Tomb Raider TV series which is being developed for the streaming service by Legendary.

Based on the Dynamite Entertainment comic book franchise, a Red Sonja movie has been in the works at Millennium for close to a decade. X-Men director Bryan Singer was attached to helm, but dropped out after backlash that he was involved in the female-led movie after those damning allegations against him (regarding his conduct with young men on his previous projects and in his personal life).

"I have loved Red Sonja forever and I feel so honored to help shepherd her story and start this cinematic journey. There could not be a greater moment in our world for Red Sonja's ways of wielding power and her connection with nature and our planet," Soloway tells the trade. "She is an ancient heroine with an epic calling, and translating that to the screen is a dream come true for me as a filmmaker. I can't wait to collaborate with Tasha on this vision."

Millennium co-president Jonathan Younger adds: "We’re very excited to be bringing Red Sonja to the market and the world. This has been a long time coming. Having Joey Soloway at the helm of this feminist icon franchise is the perfect recipe for a magical adventure, which is exactly what the world needs today."

Casting for the lead character has begun, so we'll hopefully hear more about that very soon...

Cool, I don't know though. This movie has gone through so many different variations over the past few years I feel they should just let it burn up in development hell. After having Bryan Singer attached I think they need to let the stink of his involvement tone down a bit before they touch it again.

I'm more curious to what will happen with the Conan franchise. They announced a new movie back when Schwarzenegger made his comeback in 2012, nothing came of it though.

@Blergh -

Excited for a Red Sonja movie, been in development hell for 20 years now, felt we came close with Robert Rodriguez.

Think there's definitely an appetite for these movies, also I want more Conan as well

@SimplyAz @Blergh @GeneralZod @SpardaJr - King Conan movie is dead. Arnold had a hard time finding more producers willing to put the money and the owner of the Conan rights doesn't want to make it either. Arnold said some young millionaire producer owns Conan and wants to make it into a tv show. Apparently they are still writing a script and shopping it around to major networks before filming a pilot. With the flop of the Jason Mamoa film and the owner/producers of Conan not being interested in Arnold's King Conan film any continuation of the original series is dead.

Oh cool thanks for the update.

Makes sense why King Conan seemed to disappear.

But I'd be down for a TV show, hopefully we hear some news soon

Kinda want a He-Man movie before any sort of Red Sonja movie but hey-ho, least Bryan's wandering hands aren't anyway near this.
Maybe go a little low budget of on this, can't imagine this breaking 100m at box office, even pre-pandemic

@LittleSween - well there's a He-Man movie coming from Netflix and Sony. Not sure if that one is still happening but I haven't heard anything to the contrary.
Only problem is that they cast Noah Centineo as Adam, something that worries me. Not because he looks nothing like He-Man but more because his previous acting efforts have been...iffy

I hope they don't cast some waif for Sonya and I hope they don't lose the chainmail bikini. Otherwise...what's then point?
