Andy Serkis,who is best known for his brilliant motion capture performances as Gollum from Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy, as well as Caeser from Rise of the Planet of the Apes, has been asked to direct The Jungle Book for Warner Bros. Warner Bros is currently in a race with Disney, who has its own Jungle Book in pre-produciton with Jon Favreau directing and Idris Elba cast as the voice of Shere Khan. Though this will be Serkis' first time directing a feature length film, he is no stranger to directorial responsibilities as he has directed second-unit footage for The Hobbit trilogy and is responsible for Desolation of Smaug's amazing barrel chase scene. Warner Bros. originally was in talks with Ron Howard to helm the film, though Serkis certainly makes an interesting alternative for the director's chair.

Favreau is a great director and I'm sure Serkis will do great. But one of these production companies should've gone "oh, someone else is doing the exact same this as us at the same time. Let's put this on ice for a few years, see what these guys did and do it better."

We already have two Hercules films this year, and the first one was 50 shades of terrible.

Side note, when will this gritty-reboot age die? Getting real tired of this shizzle.

It is funny how movie studios will release similar movies at the exact same time. Armageddon/Deep Imact, Dante's Peak/Volcano, Snow White and the Huntsman/Mirror Mirror, and now this. You know what movie absolutely no other company is making? The Flash or Green Lantern or...

This is actually pretty great news. The man is clearly no stranger to the CGI that this movie will undoubtedly feature quite heavily, and considering his background with this sort of scope of film, I feel like he'll be perfect for this. This might actually be a good movie

I'd normally say [frick] this but Andy Serkis is a beast, and if he plays the King of the Monkeys I'll be cool

2 Jungle Book movies I really hate it when studios do that. Serkis is awesome and I'm sure the movie will be good as well. Isn't it more business savvy to not release 2 remakes in the same time period. Or at least within a year. Geez!

Say what you want about this movie, but Serkis taking up directing can only be a good thing for the comic book movie community.

Why would Serkis effect the CBM community ever?

Instead of doing movies about DC characters, WB will be making movies about Peter Pan, Jungle Book, and Tarzan (all done by Disney beforehand). WB, you suck ass!

Kipling has other stories too.

Well I much rather see Favreau's film, especially now with Idris Elba as Shere Khan, although this does have my interest. Serkis is very talented actor, so I wouldn't be surprised if he was just as skilled behind the camera.

@MecoBoy

I take it that you're not a fan of WB then?

We do not need another Jungle Book film. Having said that, I would hate for Serkis' directorial debut to be a bomb. Hopefully, he'll have a scheduling conflict and drop out.

Hooo boy. First Pan and now this? Disney are doing Maleficent and what-not and Warners are doing these?
And I thought that we were bad for flame wars.
I guess that's what you get when your most lucrative franchises are public domain. Good job Iger's been buying up all that good shit, huh?
