C'mon Barbie, let's go party.

After an incredibly successful run in theaters, Greta Gerwig's critically-acclaimed comedy/satire has officially become Warner Bros.' highest-grossing movie of all time worldwide, with a $1.34 billion global cume.

Though it hasn't caught up (and likely won't before it debuts on streaming services) to the all-time gross heavy hitters such as Avengers: Endgame and the Avatar movies, it has shot past the likes of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, Aquaman, and Joker.

The studio has yet to officially announce a sequel, but with these numbers, you have to believe it's only a matter of time. Mattel is definitely interested in more adventures in Barbieland, and although Gerwig hasn't seemed quite as enthusiastic in recent interviews, with the right story, she may be convinced to return to the director's chair.

From Oscar-nominated writer/director Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) comes Barbie, which also stars America Ferrera (End of Watch, the How to Train Your Dragon films), Kate McKinnon (Bombshell, Yesterday), Issa Rae (The Photograph, Insecure), Rhea Perlman (I’ll See You in My Dreams, Matilda), and Will Ferrell (the Anchorman films, Talladega Nights), and more.

Gerwig directs from a screenplay she penned alongside Oscar nominee Noah Baumbach (Marriage Story, The Squid and the Whale), based on the iconic fashion dolls by Mattel.

The film’s producers are Oscar nominee David Heyman (Marriage Story, Gravity), Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Robbie Brenner, with Gerwig, Baumbach, Ynon Kreiz, Richard Dickson, Michael Sharp, Josey McNamara, Courtenay Valenti, Toby Emmerich and Cate Adams serving as executive producers.

Now that it's a hit it's not woke😂

@AmazingFILMporg - Nah. It's still "woke" In some ways overtly so. But that's not what made it successful. That doesn't explain all of the other failures of recent movies and TV shows with "Woke" themes. Barbie made a billion because of the popularity of the IP.

Barbie has been in damn near every home physically or through advertising for 65 years. It's spanned all media. Grandmas and little girls alike have played with it at one point in their lives.

I'm surprised it made a billion, but I'm not shocked in any way it's successful. It's a decent movie, great set design, great performances, and a VERY successful counter programming advertising campaign.

I'm just happy to see people going to the theaters again. My little one dressed up, and lots of other people did so too. Men and women. It was a fun time at the movies. Even if some parts made me cringe.

Congratulations WB

@DarthOmega - The popularity of an IP has never stopped the gwgb crowd from making their predictions. Star Wars, Ninja Turtles, Marvel, Disney Princesses, Call of Duty, etc, all purported to go broke via woke. "Oh well, it was too big to go broke" is just another excuse. Shows & movies fail all the time, whether they are "woke" or not. Confirmation bias is the only thing keeping gwgb alive.

DarthOmega - 8/29/2023, 12:01 PM
@BB8ANG - You just named massive IPs. All of which has been around for decades and has amassed a large fanbase. All of the above have made tons of money due to the properties not the messaging. You said shows and movies fail all the time. You're absolutely correct. Many shows and movies also are successful. Transformers, another huge Toy IP. Very VERY successful. Nothing woke about it.

Also I'm not even saying if GWGB is even accurate. Also confirmation bias is on full display for anyone acting as though the "Woke" themes of Barbie is the reason for it's success and not the fact that it's Barbie

TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 8/29/2023, 1:52 PM
@DarthOmega - Nowhere did I see BB8ang or Porg claim that Barbie was successful because it was woke and yet for some reason you are arguing against that idea.
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 8/29/2023, 1:58 PM
@TheUnworthyThor - Go Woke Go Broke in relation to Barbie (Literally the only successful film to feature "woke" themes that heavily) Is often used to say "Look, woke films are successful" Completely ignoring the reason for the film's success, and that is the IP not the messaging.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 8/29/2023, 2:09 PM
@DarthOmega - Then you’ve just been misunderstanding what people are saying. BB and Porg nailed it. Most movies and TV shows fail. Therefore most “woke” movies and TV shows fail. Also most non-woke movies and TV shows fail. And every time a movie that was being called woke becomes a hit the go woke go broke people make excuses. Either the movie isn’t really woke or no one is saying it was woke in the first place, just these constantly moving goalposts. So yeah I do think when a movie as outwardly feminist as Barbie is a huge success people are going to come out and say see woke movies can be successes. But no where does that statement say Barbie is successful because it is woke and no where are people claiming that any movie, big IP or not, would be successful if it became woke. That’s not the argument being made.

@TheUnworthyThor - "So yeah I do think when a movie as outwardly feminist as Barbie is a huge success people are going to come out and say see woke movies can be successes"

That's not what the people who are touting this film as a win for "wokeness" are saying though. They are claiming Get Woke Go Broke is a myth. They are using Barbie as an example. I'm saying the "Wokeness" had nothing to do with it's success. It's the IP only. There is no misunderstanding. Again, I'm not even saying Get Woke Go Broke is even really all that accurate. I actually find that slogan annoying. But if I were to ignore that heavy "woke" themes in movies, games, or advertising is turning off audiences and consumers, that would be silly.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 8/29/2023, 2:33 PM
@DarthOmega - They are saying it’s a myth because woke movies and TV shows are successful all the time. And not successful all the time. Whether or not a movie is “woke” is just something jerkoffs on the internet are arguing about and barely makes a ripple in the general population who are just living their lives and watching what they watch without knowing what dum dumps are saying on social media.
DarthOmega
DarthOmega - 8/29/2023, 2:47 PM
@TheUnworthyThor - But they aren't successful "All the time" This "Wokeness" stuff is pretty recent. I'm writing "Woke" like this because some think people are complaining that having movies centered on women or people of color means "Woke" it doesn't.

If that were the case the movies and TV shows I grew up in as a kid and young adult would have been considered woke. People are talking about clumsy, heavy handed messaging that's oversaturating the entertainment industry as of late.

An example would be race swapping, getting rid of jobs for little people actors, getting rid of mascots, making up phrases like Latin X etc. Putting identity over everything including character.

There are plenty of dum dums on social media from all sides. Either way I'm happy for the film's success. I'm happy people are going to the movies again to see something that isn't just heavy CGI super hero movies.
TheUnworthyThor
TheUnworthyThor - 8/29/2023, 3:06 PM
@DarthOmega - And that’s the problem, they define what woke is by whatever they dislike and fits their narrative in the moment. None of it is really woke by what the term actually means. What they are really complaining about is poor movie making but because they have a political axe to grind they insert extra bullsh%t. There are movies with all white casts with no character depth that are little more than stereotypes and there have been those movies for a hundred years and the same with very diverse casts.

Honestly I'm a little surprised. It's a good movie. Like a solid B but I wouldn't say it's good enough to be this successful. I'm glad people are having a good time with it though.
