Production on the upcoming Lord of the Rings series recently commenced in New Zealand, and Amazon has now announced 20 new cast members for the show.

Setting off on this new Middle-earth adventure will be: Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Power, The Accountant), Maxim Baldry (Years and Years), newcomer Ian Blackburn, Kip Chapman (Top of the Lake), Anthony Crum (The Wilds), Maxine Cunliffe (Power Rangers Megaforce), Trystan Gravelle (The Terror), Sir Lenny Henry (Broadchurch), Thusitha Jayasundera (Broadchurch), Fabian McCallum (You, Me & The Apocalypse), Simon Merrells (Knightfall), Geoff Morrell (Rake), Peter Mullan (Westworld), Lloyd Owen (Viva Laughlin), Augustus Prew (The Morning Show), Peter Tait (Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King), Alex Tarrant (Filthy Rich), Leon Wadham (Power Rangers Beast Morphers), Benjamin Walker (Jessica Jones) and Sara Zwangobani (Home and Away).

No details on any of their characters have been revealed, but they join a core cast that includes Robert Aramayo (Game of Thrones), Owain Arthur (Kingdom), Nazanin Boniadi (Counterpart) and Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones).

As far as we know, Markella Kavenagh's Galadriel will be the only previously established LOTR character involved.

"The world that J.R.R. Tolkien created is epic, diverse and filled with heart. These extraordinarily talented performers, hailing from across the globe, represent the culmination of a multiyear search to find brilliant and unique artists to bring that world to life anew," said showrunners/executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay in a joint statement. "The international cast of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series is more than just an ensemble. It is a family. We are thrilled to welcome each of them to Middle-earth."

Plot specifics are few and far between, but it has been confirmed that the story will take place many years before the events of the first installment in J.R.R. Tolkien's iconic fantasy trilogy, The Fellowship of the Ring. The show has already been renewed for a second season.

J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) will direct the first two episodes and serve as EP with his partner Belén Atienza.

A premiere date for Lord of the Rings has not been set.

I see a few familiar names, but not a lot. I'm glad though that they don't pick very well known faces, because I think that would kinda distract from the pretty massive story and world they seem to be setting up.

I'm optimistycally cautious about this, the mere idea of this show sounds amazing, but the shoehorning of sex and gore to emulate GOT might hurt its quality.

@jarcastanon - Did they say they were gonna do that?

I wonder what story they actually plan to tell here, short & long term. Do they plan to go all the way to the war with Sauron ? Setting it in the Second Age opens possibilities to do almost anything, they just need to keep to the tone of the books or movies, or it will quickly devolve into standard high-fantasy fare.

Peter Mullan + LOTR = greatness. Guaranteed

@Alphadog - The look of the movies may have been aped to death, but the tone of the books is still unique AFAIK. The songs and music, the deep sense of hope and camaraderie, the clear cut cultural differences between all the species, the talking animals. Then there's the complete absence of sex & sex drive, of gore, & of swearing. The actual working elven language, while most others just speak gibberish & make a couple of simple words that translate. The deep mythology.
The roots being a mixture of being a linguistics profesor, lived WW1 experience, classic medieval quests, the Christian Bible and the cuteness of a father trying to entertain his children. It's a very unique perspective.

The biggest name is probably bloody Lenny Henry! I know these sprawling ensemble casts usually contain a lot of up-and-comers, but you'd think they could have brought in SOME star power for this. I'm not optimnistic.

Not many known names there, seems budget wise they spent all on the license or rather go for small hitters rather than big ones.

There are a ton of interesting fantasy properties out there waiting to be adapted with a decent budget. Many books that are inherently more modern and diverse, and/or raunchy and violent if that's what you want. I really don't see the need to spend a fortune on butchering Tolkien's works a bit more.

@Kyos - Dragonlance NEEDS a non-Kiefer adaptation.

If Tom Baker weren't so old, he'd make a dashing Tom Bombadil.

I'm so nervous about this. It could either be fantastic or it could desecrate one of the most unique and special franchises. LOTR gave birth to the fantasy genre, and Tolkien's world is vast with so much room to explore. But if its not done in the same spirit as the books and the 3 films then it will be a travesty. The rumor that they're going to add sex & gore to mimic GOT's success is really disappointing.

In 50 years GOT will be forgotten. LOTR will live on.
