Ghost Rider Casting Director Reveals Why Ryan Gosling Is "The Perfect Choice" For The MCU Reboot

Ryan Gosling is finally getting his chance to play Ghost Rider in the MCU, and Marvel Studios casting director Sarah Finn has revealed why he's the perfect choice for the Spirit of Vengeance.

One of the biggest surprises to come out of San Diego Comic-Con this year was the announcement of a new Ghost Rider movie, starring Ryan Gosling as the Spirit of Vengeance.

The upcoming Marvel Studios film will be directed by Shawn Levy (Deadpool & Wolverine), reuniting him with Gosling after the two worked together on Star Wars: Starfighter (in theaters May 28, 2027). The announcement also brought an end to years of speculation surrounding Gosling's potential involvement in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Gosling has never hidden that he wanted to play Ghost Rider, and he’s talked openly about his interest in the supernatural antihero. Now Marvel Studios casting director Sarah Finn has explained why he was the right choice for the role.

Speaking with Collider at the Newport Beach Film Festival, Finn said Gosling’s enthusiasm for the character was one of the biggest reasons he got the part, along with his range as an actor.

"He's the perfect choice, first of all, because he's really passionate about playing the role, and that's something that matters; that passionate actors bring to these characters the love for the characters that we feel on-screen. And on top of that, he's an unbelievably talented and versatile actor. So, with the combination of Shawn Levy at the helm, I feel good about this. I feel good about our possibilities here."

Gosling once named Ghost Rider as the Marvel character he’d most like to play, and Kevin Feige later confirmed that Gosling was the one who brought the idea to the studio.

A three-time Oscar nominee, Gosling certainly has the range Finn is talking about. He's taken on darker roles in films like Drive and Blade Runner 2049, while showing off his comedic side in The Nice Guys and Barbie. Ghost Rider could give him an opportunity to bring both sides of his acting career together.

Gosling won’t be the first actor to play the Spirit of Vengeance in live action. Nicolas Cage starred as Johnny Blaze in two Ghost Rider movies, and Gabriel Luna played Robbie Reyes on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Marvel has yet to confirm which version of Ghost Rider Gosling will play, though reports suggest it will be Johnny Blaze.

Plot details for the MCU's upcoming take on the character remain under wraps, though Jonathan Tropper, who also worked with Gosling and Levy on Star Wars: Starfighter, is writing the screenplay.

Ghost Rider is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 28, 2028.

@blacksocksdaily - It’s a great team and Gosling is a really likable actor but I can’t help but wonder what someone like Del Toro would bring to this

@Batmangina - I think Gosling is one of the last big-name actors who will create a draw by just being in it. Most don’t care about ghost rider, but I think he’ll move the needle a tad.

Drive really made me get on board with this casting.

Gosling has proven he can play a badass. And for a more stoic character like Blaze, he's a great choice.

@ModHaterSLADE - Went into Drive completely blind. Decided to watch it with my wife randomly. I still chuckle at how shocked we both were by the gore. Great movie though.

This site has a guy that always posts Biden gifs
A guy that demands reboot the two most prominent comic book studios, in every post
A guy who is a literal nazi who changes his name every few months
A guy who is obsessed with hulk to shill levels

Thats only a tiny sample of the many true characters here

I've been part of many online boards, forums, Fandom, communities. All the way back to AOL chat rooms
And never have I see a group of characters such as this on any of them but here

@Vigor - who’s the Nazi changing his name every few months lol? Not trying to trap you just genuinely couldn’t figure out who that was. I know the other characters you listed.

I don’t agree with everyone here about everything but I share my thoughts on things as I believe them and I think it’s good that you have an open square of ideas even if I find some ridiculous. I’m definitely someone who believes that things are best kept open when it comes to speech except with maybe a few exceptions. We learn through hearing others opinions - even if what we learn is how particularly or thoroughly we think they’re wrong on an issue or why we believe even more completely in our own position on a matter.

@Lucasberg - i wish I could remember even one of the three names I encountered. But he would say some suspiciously racist things. And most people are defensive when you call them racist. But not him. He would own it. He would start trying to prove why white people and black people should be segregated. He would then quote Hitler and talk third Reich ideologies

Absolutely wild

I'd report him and he would disappear and then come back in a few months with a new name. And I could always call him out and he would never deny it. He would totally own it. I oddly respected him for being true to himself. I get annoyed when someone doesnt have self reflection skills to see how their views are divisive or biased or borderline racist. We should all be able to recognize our own bias. While I'm a social justice warrior, I do know i have biases too

Gosling wasn’t my first choice for Ghost Rider but he can be stoic , brooding & intense while also showing the vulnerability of the character so I’m looking forward to seeing his iteration…

It should be especially fun to see since he pitched this take and brought on Levy to direct it himself so he’s certainly invested thus fingers crossed it turns out well!!.

Gosling is cool. He’s usually best when he’s quiet. I know that seems demeaning but he has a presence and doesn’t have to do much. He emotes well. “Drive” and “Lard and the Real Girl” are great examples of it. He says a lot without tons of dialogue. Ghost Rider would work with that Gosling. I just think Ryan can be a bit silly but in the same way, most times. It can get a little repetitive. Silent Gosling is the best. My old friend and I would tell eachother when we would want to approach someone we liked or before going on a date” be silent Gosling, the best Gosling”.

I feel bad for not being optimistic about Shawn Levy since I love his Night at the Museum trilogy. But I wasn't impressed by Deadpool & Wolverine and Free Guy was very average.

We need more actors and writers / directors passionate about the things they are creating. When's the last time someone was afraid of the source material or hated it and somehow made a better product in recent years?

I don’t love Levy being attached to direct this but if he can pull it off this might finally be the “next Iron Man” that Marvel has been trying to make for years. A-list actor playing a B-Tier character in a film where the lead and the director seem to be pushing to have a collaborative approach towards the project.

Now if only Feige and Marvel get get out of their way maybe this could usher in a whole Midnight Sons phase of movies that would serve as a perfect contrast to the X-Men/Mutant Saga

i don't think he's the perfect choice. Its just strange because before he became famous, I watched his 90s show Breaker High. He was my favourite character. Also he was on Goosebumps and Are You Afraid of the Dark? And now he's in my MCU. It's crazy.
