David Ayer Reveals Why He Chose To Helm GOTHAM CITY SIRENS Over A SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel
While director David Ayer was at SDCC on Thursday to promote Bright, he couldn't escape fielding a few questions on his next feature Gotham City Sirens, so come see what he had to say about the project!
Director David Ayer made a return to San Diego Comic-Con this week to promote his upcoming Netflix release Bright, which stars Will Smith and Joel Edgerton in the lead roles, and while he managed to stay on-topic for a majority of Thursday, he couldn't quite escape fielding a question about his next directorial venture, the DC Films adventure Gotham City Sirens.
In a conversation with IGN, Ayer revealed his reasoning behind choosing to direct the female-led spin-off over a sequel to 2016's Suicide Squad, which, despite its abysmal critical reception, managed to gross over $745.6 million at the worldwide box office - a number that more or less helped guarantee a sequel. Without getting into plot or character details, Ayer sincerely replied, "It's a story about three fantastic women who're trying to find their way in the world and realize that they have more power together than they do individually. I have daughters, and I want to create something that might be able to help them get along in the world a little bit."
Ayer doesn't exactly have an established track record when it comes to developing strong female characters, so it's hard not to remain a little skeptical - but if there is one thing that could seemingly help change that perception it's Bright, which in addition to Smith & Edgerton, will also feature Noomi Rapace and Lucy Fry in major roles.
Not much is known about Gotham City Sirens, aside from the the fact that it'll feature Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), who may or may not be sporting a new look the next time we see her. "Let's put a pin in that. Maybe next Comic-Con... Everybody evolves." It also sounds like a potential 2019 release date is in the cards.
With Warner Bros. SDCC presentation just a few short hours away, here's to hoping we learn a lot more about this project and several more by the end of today.
So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!
Gotham City Sirens follows the titular team of Catwoman, Poison Ivy, and Harley Quinn as they are forced to band together to protect themselves in Gotham City.
