Suicide Squad may have failed to strike a chord with moviegoers and critics, but it was a box office success. As a result, Warner Bros. made plans to develop a spin-off, Gotham City Sirens.
David Ayer was originally tapped to helm the movie, with the plan being to put the spotlight on Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn alongside Poison Ivy and Catwoman.
Somewhere along the line, the project fell apart, and common sense says that stemmed from both the negative response to Suicide Squad and the fact Warner Bros. eviscerated Ayer’s vision for Task Force X in post-production (hence why he’s hoping DC Studios will eventually #ReleaseTheAyerCut).
Gotham City Sirens later became Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey, though we know that, for many of you, the less said about that movie, the better!
Offering an idea of what the movie could have looked like are some incredible Halloween costumes donned by Riverdale stars Camila Mendes, Madelaine Petsch, and Lili Reinhart. They each look near-perfect as their respective takes on the characters and we’re sure the majority of you would have no issue with this trio suiting up as the formidable anti-heroes in the DCU.
Mendes is a Teen Choice Awards winner also known for her work in Palm Springs, while Petsch is a social media megastar who will take centre stage in next year's remake of slasher franchise The Strangers. As for Reinhart, she counts the likes of Hustlers, Chemical Hearts, and Charlie's Angels among her many credits.
As far as we’re aware, the plan at DC Studios is for Margot Robbie to return as Harley, though whether James Gunn has plans for Selina Kyle and Pamela Isley remains to be seen. The former is obviously part of Matt Reeves’ The Batman franchise, though that doesn’t necessarily mean she’ll be off-limits to the DCU, especially with Gunn calling the shots instead of Warner Bros. executives.
In terms of female-led projects, the DCU isn't exactly lacking (we have Waller, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and a Themyscira-set series all on the way) but adding these three into the mix would be no bad thing.
