Despite reports that the movie was expected to bring in around $45-50 million for the four-day Martin Luther King day weekend in the US, it looks more likely that it'll be nearer the $40 million mark after something of an underwhelming opening yesterday. However,
The Green Hornet did hit the #1 spot seeing off competition from Oscar hopefulls like
True Grit and
The King's Speech.
In total, the Michel Gondry directed flick took in
$11.5 million. This isnt a bad start by any means, and although it's unlikely that it'll beat the four-day Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend record (currently held by
Cloverfield at $46 million) it should have little trouble overtaking 2009's
Paul Blart: Mall Cop $39.2m) and last years
The Book of Eli ($38.4m).
For most January releases, an opening like this one would be more than adequate, but with a budget rumoured to be somewhere around $125-150 million and a large amount of marketing by Sony, it looks like some strong International grosses overseas will be a big help to the picture.

REVIEW of
The Green Hornet, I thought the movie was fantastic and have high hopes for a sequel...hopefully, things will pick up over the next few days, and box office takings from around the world will help it turn a decent enough profit.
