Mark Strong Talks About Sinestro's Green Lantern Costume

The comic book movie veteran actor describes his costume for Martin Campbell's Green Lantern movie and also talks about several 'looks' that didn't make it into the film.

In another post-Comic Con interview, MTV caught up with actor Mark Strong and managed to confirm his costume in the DC comics adaptation Green Lantern will be completely CGI; just like Ryan Reynolds. Besides the suit, though, Strong sports "prosthetics and makeup from the neck up" to complete Sinestro's look.

"People will be — and I am — really delighted at the fact that they've really made sure that he is as he is in the comics. Because there was a whole production run of ideas of ponytails and goatees and all this kind of stuff, [and] I couldn't really understand why they would want to change it, because it's so successful in the comic."

Regarding the character's comics counterpart, Strong added:

"It's born of the look of David Niven, that mustache and that widow's peak, and I think it would be a shame to get rid of it,"

"I'm delighted, because he looks pretty much exactly like he is in the comic."

I like it. I don't think that I'll be TOO critical regarding Sinestro's look. Where I WILL be, would be with Hal's. The other concern will be with the action figures and the look of the fast food tie-ins.

Man Strong has been getting a lot of work as villains. Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass, Robin Hood, and Now GL. He's great at what he does.

I finally read "Green Lantern: Rebirth" today. Cant believe what I've been missing out on!!! Not only is Geoff Johns an amazing writer (although I already knew that from his work on The Avengers a few years back) but Hal Jordon is a pretty awesome character as well! It's the first time I've read a comic featuring him and I'm now a hell of a lot more excited for the movie!

I liked it so much, I just ordered every GL graphic novel leading right up to "Blackest Night"! :)

@JoshW - Good man! But -- Wow! You are REALLY young! I suppose living in the UK doesn't help matters much, as you guys probably don't enjoy the same level of distribution over there as we have here in the states!

Hal Jordan has been such an institution in DC comics since his debut in 1959 that it's hard to believe that there are readers out there who aren't familiar with him! Haven't you ever seen SuperFriends or heard of the Super Powers toyline? I had Jordan's figure back in '84! (Wow!)

I do recommend that you start reading the older comics first(pre-crisis)! IDK if you're aware, but DC has been publishing hardcover archive editions collecting the earliest stories of its major characters since 1989 -- I hope that helps!

If you start with the originals first, you'll have a greater appreciation for the buildup to "Emerald Twilight", which you should have read before "Rebirth"! The Secret Origins series also is a good jumping on point for new readers who are looking to familiarize themselves with the classic, iconic DC characters! Ah well, at least you're reading them!

JonF: Lol, I am indeed only 20 and I've been reading Marvel since I was about 11! I've only just now started to read DC because it took so long to get bang up to date with all of the MU and there never seemed to be a good place to start with DC! After seeing that JMS would be writing Superman and Wonder Woman though, with two storylines that are easy to pick up on, I started with them and last week finished catching upwith Grant Morrison's Batman! ("Batman and Robin" is superb IMO)

To be honest, living in the UK did make it a lot harder because I started with the UK reprints which were about 3/4 years behind the current US titles and they only reprinted a selection of comics - no DD, Hulk, FF to name a few examples! I spent a lot of money catching up with pretty much every title with graphic novels (along with the a lot of 60/70/80's classic storylines of course) and I've been buying comics on a weekly basis since about "Civil War"! The other problem was that it's pretty rare to find any comic book stores here apart from a handful in the major cities...thank God for Amazon and eBay!

I havent heard of them I'm afraid though, lol, but I appreciate the advice about picking up the older stories! I started with "Rebirth" because I wanted to get straight on with catching up to the current storylines. I agree that it's always good to read the even older stories though as it will of course help me get to know the character and give me a better understanding/appreciation of the current stuff!

NightAvenger/InterestingJohn/TYLER/MatchesMalone/Joey Misfit/odie00: Thanks guys, I'm glad to finally hop aboard the DC train! :) I've still got A LOT of catching up to do but I feel like I'm getting there! I mean, it's hard not to like Hal Jordon when he just turns around and punches Batman right in the face, lol - I love the character but damn, he was asking for that! And the scene where they all recite the oath while fighting Parallax gave me freaking goosebumps!

Regardless, I've now completely changed my mind about the movie...it's going to be awesome! Before, I couldnt really appreciate the kind of characters and scenes we'll see but now I realise it's going to be EPIC! Thank God "Rebirth" was easy to start with - between that, and a few hours on Wikipedia, I feel like I've got a decent grip on most of them.

"In Brightest Day, In Blackest Night, No Evil Shall Escape Our Sight, Let Those Who Worship Evil's Might, Beware Our Power, Green Lantern's Light!"

Is that right, lol? I've reread the scene I mentioned above so many times I'm pretty sure I now know it off by heart! :P

mark strong is an incredible ally for GL fans! and i really wonder if campbell cast this movie not just on acting ability but ALSO on how into their roles the actors seemed to be. there hasn't been one interview or appearance from a GL cast member that hasn't proven that these guys know their stuff AND are working their butts off to do these characters justice. even sarsgaard, who admits he's iffy on CBMs in general, seems to like being hammond.

yes there are still things that can go wrong with the movie... but if everybody working on it has as much passion for the material as the main actors do, this may be the most fun AND source-faithful CBM of all time!

GL and THOR all the way!

Meh...Man of Steel should be better. But Mark Strong was definitely a good choice. Now if only they would cast Billy Zane for Lex Luthor in the upcoming Supes film...

By the way...who else here thinks in the near future they will have a JLA film spawn from this GL movie? A friend told me a rumor they might go that route with this Green Lantern movie.

@JoshW—awesome to see you reading GL man! first comic i ever read and the ONLY one i read for about 3 years... but now i'm sure you understand how it was enough to draw me into the whole comics world! GL is the perfect place to start with DC.

@LP4—hey... no DC infighting! you get psyched for GL and i promise we GL people will get psyched for MOS. doesn't matter which one is "better" all that matters is that we're finally gonna get to see our favorite guys on screen!

Luckily for Mark Strong Sinestro has a lot of depth and development that he can get into as an actor. I like it when the villian is just as interesting as the hero. I hope Green Lantern lives up to how good it's looking so far!

@wolverinesfury They should have used a tattoo instead of a scar for Bullseye.

@weneedrevelation It depends on the editor. All these tits and ass pics are getting kind of ridiculous and extremely off topic and in bad taste. I think it would best for everyone to do without it. I mean there are sites for them like collegehumor, ebaumsworld, and somethingawful. This site however has a very broad audience including kids, but that's just my opinion. I know a lot of people don't agree. lol
