BOX OFFICE: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Soars To The Top (Again) At The U.S. Box Office

Guardians of the Galaxy

Marvel Studios obviously had more than '12% of a plan' venturing into the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and releasing the James Gunn helmed Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014. Guardians opened at #1, holding on to the top spot for a week. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles opened on August 8, knocking the Guardians to the #2 position.

After it's 18th day of release, Guardians of the Galaxy returned to it's former glory and reclaimed the #1 spot atop the U.S. box office with a take of $2.88 million ($2,884,902) on Monday, beating the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which earned $2.80 million ($2,801,620).

Surely, the impressive critic and audience reception (92% and 95% respectively on Rotten Tomatoes) with strong word-of-mouth and repeat viewings have helped the Guardians with this ascent to the top of the box office almost three weeks after it's release.

As of August 18, Guardians of the Galaxy stands at $226 million domestic and $196 million foreign (still to open in the large markets of China and Japan), for a total of $422 million. For comparison, Marvel Studio's Captain America: The Winter Soldier finished it's theatrical run with $260 million domestic and $714 million world-wide.

Quill: Ninja Turtle you better stop poking me

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance. Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy is presented by Marvel Studios and stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper as the voice of Rocket, Vin Diesel as the voice of Groot, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker, Karen Gilian, Djimon Hounsou with John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Commander Rael and Benicio del Toro as The Collector. Distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, the film opened in the United States on August 1, 2014.

Oh joy, we can get more people raving about it instead of giving the actual great MCU movie (Winter Soldier) its proper due. God does this kind of shit piss me off.

lol is this really news. How about Amy Adams (newest Lois Lane) just turned 40.

Although I have seen her without make up and it's very telling.

@kevberg

Liking both is not the issue, this contingent of people calling Winter Soldier overrated and now saying its no where near as good as they originally thought just because its not as brightly colored, jokey and hollow as GotG is what pisses me off.

What? Cap TWS was May, it's [frick]ing August now. This movie is now the new thing, people have moved on from the brilliance of TWS and are now celebrating the brilliance of Guardians.

everyone was praising the winter soldier when it came out just because everyone is praising GOTG doesn't mean they dont think TWS was a great movie. it's been a while since TWS came out so there is nothing wrong with everyone praising GOTG which come out 3 weeks ago.

@NovaCorpsFan

Id prefer a movie that can make me laugh and have a compelling story, which MCU gave me with Iron Man 1, First Avenger and Winter Soldier. Guardians is not one of those movies, its an alright movie that is only as enjoyable as it is because of all the jokes, structurally it has a lot of problems.

Cool, it's great you've got an opinion. Although I acknowledge the film has some structural issues (saying and not showing some things), the overall feeling of the film makes me over look the issues that it has. A solid 8.5/10 for me.

The first 5 minutes of GotG is one of the most emotional scenes in any CBM and there's people saying it didn't have any depth.
A raccoon has an Emotional, serious AND funny scene, a tree has one, a wrestler who no one thought could act has dramática scenes.

Not because the story has kind of generic it means the movie had no real meaning

@ekrolo2: I love TWS just as much as I ever have, I'm counting down the days till I get the blu-ray. Show me one example of someone saying they love it less because it's not the exact same movie as GotG. They're two completely different films which both happen to be unbelievably awesome in their own unique ways. As far as I'm concerned they're BOTH Marvel's best movie thus far.
