BOX OFFICE: THE HUNGER GAMES Set To Top GOTG As 2014's Highest Grossing Domestic Movie

Domestically that is! No 2014 movie will come close to topping Transformers: Age of Extinction as the highest grossing worldwide release, but The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 looks set to take the crown in North America from Guardians of the Galaxy. Read on for details...

Guardians of the Galaxy exceeded everyone's expectations last year, and for quite some time, it held the crown as 2014's highest grossing movie in North America. That's quite the accomplishment, especially in a year which saw the release of a number of far better known superhero franchises like Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Both domestically and worldwide, Guardians of the Galaxy beat each of those. Back at home, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 proved it's hard to beat a popular YA adaptation, even if it is essentially two hours of people standing around talking. @giteshpandya reports that the first half of that series' finale is set to comfortably overtake Guardians of the Galaxy with a total of around $340 million to become 2014's #1 domestic movie. That's only $8 million more the Marvel Studios movie, and it's hard to imagine Part 2 reaching these same heights in a year which features the release of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Star Wars: The Force Awakens...

The release year is all that matters, not what year you are watching it.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 proved it's hard to beat a popular YA adaptation, even if it is essentially two hours of people standing around talking."

Sounds like someone didn't like the movie =P

Seriously though, it's well-deserved. Guardians was undeniably great and a massive accomplishment (probably the biggest success of the year, given the context around it), but Mockingjay really was that good too.

Guardians doesn't have anything to prove anymore, though, especially in terms of box office numbers. The narrative changed from people expecting Marvel's first major flop to people celebrating Marvel's biggest risk paying off. It's an incredible accomplishment no matter how you slice it.

That's par for the course. It's the bigger franchise after all. Doesn't take away from what GotG has achieved. Not all of it was the Marvel brand.

Loved Part 1, thought it was pretty good, will probably end up in my top ten after I see two more movies and make a top ten for 2014.

Calling transformers 4 mediocre is overhyping it

And by the rules set forth by many users here I guess that makes HG the best movie of the year and everything else sucked. Right?

Why ? Did you lay a wager that GotG would stay at n°1 ??

I like Guardians less and less as time goes on. And I didn't like it that much to begin with. Watched it once and have never wanted to see it again.

Yeah. I don't understand it either. It's only the b.o numbers. There is no direct correlation with the movie's quality. If there was, everyone would be gushing about Transformers' worldwide pull.

People enjoyed GotG. People also enjoyed Mockingjay p.1. No reason to be sad about it.

How much money a movie made doesn't matter, it's how much it affected its audience that counts. Whether it is Gaurdians of the Galaxy it TMNT or some other third film, if it created an experience you were happy to have witnessed in theater, then it's all you could asked for. No need to let thier accomplishment go to waste. I've seen lots of people impersonate Groot on comment sections and all the kids and my fellow peers wear their new TMNT merchandise HONORED & PREVLEDGED! It's safe to say those films had a successful year!

Peter Jackson's latest huge dump; The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, looks to be on pace to take #1 for 2014.
An impressive pile of shit by Jackson. Jackson and Bay are the great Shitters of our time.

@ MARVELPSYCHO79 - Yeah, that's practically a given. Anything Avengers will be more anticipated than anything else, outside of Star Wars (and maybe Batman V Superman, but that's not even sure).

Age of Ultron will easily make over a billion. Don't know if it'll catch the first one, but it certainly could, given how powerful the Marvel brand has become, and how good word-of-mouth can carry a movie into the stratosphere.

Not surprised, it's a lot of buildup going on within the HG franchise.

Well, I think Marvel is still celebrating being #2 both domestically and internationally. GOTG exceeded all expectations while Mockingjay Part 1 has underperformed compared to its previous movies. Next year, Mockingjay Part 2 has no chance to claim #1 -not with Avengers: AOU and SW: The Force Awakens.
JPSpideyFan2015
JPSpideyFan2015 - 1/4/2015, 9:54 AM
This is no surprise, because since last year critics and specialists talk about Mockingjay lead the year with projection between 390 and 400 millions, the movie will just make 50 million less, finishing with 340 million, still a great number. Guardians make a huge sucess, but The Hunger Games franchise is still popular enough.

About the part 2, doesn't matter the competition of Avengers or Star Wars, the movie will make more than 400 million, of course the movie will not win this year, but will be in the top 5.
Demiurge
Demiurge - 1/4/2015, 9:57 AM
@MARVELPSYCHO79 - It certainly has the potential. Whatever happens, we all know who the real winner will be : Disney. Bob Iger will basically control mankind's mind by the end of 2015. He'll be able to make us do whatever he friggin' wants.
