James Gunn And Chris Pratt On "3AM Nightmares" While Making GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

Director James Gunn and Star-Lord actor Christ Pratt reflect on "the riskiest moves of their careers", Guardians of the Galaxy. Said Pratt on Marvel Studios' willingness to pull the trigger on what many perceived as a colossal risk, "Everyone wants to win big, but no one wants to gamble."

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn says he was pretty confident while shooting Guardians of the Galaxy, however, occasionally, he'd have a few sleepless nights. "I actually felt that [Guardians of the Galaxy] was something that people needed, they just didn't know it yet. They needed the humor, they needed the fun. So, I felt confident, but there were those nights at 3AM where I would wake up and be like, 'Oh my God, what am I doing. If this goes wrong, my life is screwed. I'll be a pariah'".

Pratt chimed in, "Every rule said, 'You don't make a movie with a talking tree,' 'You don't spend this much money on a raccoon with a gun.' For me, I was like, 'Oh, so this movie is going to bomb. Done. This is the end of my career."

Sometimes in life, it pays to roll the dice. Guardians of the Galaxy could be argued as the first time Marvel Studios has taken a gamble, after all, Kevin Feige and co. had nothing to lose with Iron Man (2008). With Guardians of the Galaxy 2 now in development (and did Pratt hint that it's going to start shooting in March? Listen closely) and beloved by fans all over the world, it's safe to say there's no longer anything risky about a "talking tree" or "raccoon with a gun".

Well it wasn't a dance-off per say, but more a dance-distraction ;)

Me and Nomis' favorite movie of the year!

Why is Marvel shooting this and Infinity War a full two years before they release?

"Kevin Feige and co. had nothing to lose with Iron Man (2008)."

Really? I thought they had EVERYTHING to lose with Iron Man. A second-tier, unknown character played by Robert Downey Jr? That screams "RISK" to me.

With Inhumans, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Dr. Strange in the pipeline, Marvel is clearly not done taking massive risks either.

I've written it before and I'll write it again, unlike any other movie in the MCU I felt things with Guardians of the Galaxy. I cared about the characters, I laughed and I even shed a few tears at the very end. The combination of Quill's mother's letter, why he goes by StarLord and the Awesome Mix vol 2, just hit me right in he feels.

And I agree with @batz11 it was a distraction, he just says "dance-off." The clip even shows Ronan isn't the only puzzled/distracted, it catches Gamora off guard too. She doesn't understand/get why Quill is dancing. That point was made when she didn't understand his love/enjoyment of music.

@SauronsBANE When you have nothing to begin with, risking it all is a lot easier.

Honestly, I just got the film last night and watched it and to me I enjoyed the film a little big less than the first time I saw it in theaters. Though the imagery and action had superb importance towards the story I feel as if the humor was a bit too heavy. I know...I know..."Why do you people have sticks up your a**es about humor?" You see I enjoyed the humor, there were even bits where I laughed again at the same jokes but some moments were like "We can't make this scene serious or attention worthy without someone quoting a funny line or someone doing something goofy." (Ex: Star Lord dropping the orb when handing it over to the collector, dance off against Ronan, "they got my dick message!".) I dunno, just felt more like Family Guy at times. Again, I still enjoyed this new breath of fresh air within the MCU but I hope that the dialogue and pacing isn't too dependent on humor next go around.

@MarkJulian Yeah that's a good point. Maybe not a "risk" then, but that movie practically carried the fate of the MCU with it. There was definitely a lot riding on it.

@EzioKenway1225 I'd be happy to never see an Iron Man 4. Him being included in Civil War is enough for me. I agree, I'd rather they focus on all those new characters they're going to be introducing.

@SauronsBANE

I agree about Iron Man being a risk.

Feige from a pretty interesting 2012 interview with Wired. The whole interview is pretty great, but this in particular stood out:

“Chris Nolan’s Batman is the greatest thing that happened because it bolstered everything. Imagine the one-two punch in 2008 of ‘Iron Man’ and ‘Dark Knight’? It was great,” Feige said. “Six years earlier I was having conversations with studio execs where they’d say, ‘Why don’t you come work for us? These comic book movies can’t last forever. It’s probably towards the tail end.’ And I, being with big bright-eyed naiveté would go, ‘I don’t know, I think we can do more. I think there’s more fun to be had.’”

SauronsBANE - Yeah, Iron Man was definitely a risk. it's just easier to bet the house when you have nothing. It's easier to pull the trigger on risky decisions when you're a start-up versus when you're a $billion+ movie studio. Let me ask you this, do you think the Marvel today would have cast the Robert Downey Jr. of 2007/2008 in one of their movies?

Yeah, I think a lot of people probably did like it, but after rewatching it you've got Ronan who questions what Peter is doing twice!? lol Ahhh it just felt like a cop out. Now of course I'm not insane enough to say that I would've wanted to wipe out the entire planet! lol but the finale could've felt more like a finale for me. That's what Marvel honestly slacks at their finales when it comes to their villains. It's always a boring/I creative way they all get wiped out. Well at least 2/3's of them that is...I still enjoyed the film but man. I want to see a finale like that in Man of Steel (no, I'm not looking for neck snapping trolls) but some creative action sequences. Incredible Hulk is one of the few films that got that aspect right.

If anything we got more battles with Drax vs. Ronan than the entire team vs. him. Oh yeah, I also picked up that Drax doesn't really freeze in space as quickly as Gamora and Star-Lord. He was just chilling on top of the space ship with the machine guns and all.
