One plot thread in Guardians of The Galaxy left hanging for future films was Peter Quill's mysterious father. While speaking with Vulture James Gunn discussed the story of Guardians of The Galaxy 2, and teases a resolution to that plot thread.. "There's a lot of stuff I'm excited about in the new movie," the director told Vulture, "Listen, I'm still excited about Star-Lord's character and where he goes. At its heart, Guardians is a story about families, and if the first film was about him and his mother, this is a story about fathers. So it's exciting to go there."  It may be worth noting that Gunn says "fathers" rather than "father", so perhaps we'll see the sequel explore other fathers like Thanos and his "children", Drax's past with his daughter, or someone else entirely.

The Guardians director also revealed that not only did he have an idea for the sequel while making first Guardians, but he also has plans for "the third one!"

Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Peter discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand - with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

i hope one of his ideas is to have both films not be as anti-climatic as the first one

Tons of directions they could go with that.
Drax is the father of Moondragon they could introduce her as another adopted daughter of Thanos.
Gamora with her relationship to Thanos.
Star lord and his father, whoever that is. I'm betting on Starhawk.
Rocket Raccoon's creators maybe?
Either way this is gonna be awesome.

And I think we'll see Yondu feel more protective of Peter, and this will cause a clash with Peter's actual dad.

And I like that idea of introducing Moondragon to give Drax more conflict.

starhawk played by kevin bacon (how funny would it be if he played quill's dad) or al pacino make it happen

If it's about fathers, I'm betting Thanos has a more major role, they'll introduce Moondragon and reveal Quill's father too.

@Hornhead I'm glad they're getting rid of J'son. He's not interesting at all.

Oh yes: Drax meets Moondragon, Thanos & Gamora(possibly capturing her and giving her more "enchantments" and make Gamora his slave??)

I like it that James Gunn is thinking ahead, considering at least very sketchy ideas for the following films.

I'm guessing this means Moondragon will appear

Didn't Gunn say something about wanting to introduce more of the original Guardians? If I'm not making that up, I'm going with Starhawk from the original team, IE the big wings on his back and the fact he has the power of light like an Angel, just how Peter's mom described him

"and if the first film was about him and his mother,"

I hardly felt that because Quill acted like a clown for most of the movie. Only at the end when he showed his birthday present i was like ''oh yeah that''.

I'm gonna say Starhawk because clearly Gunn cares more about the Earth-691 Guardians.

I hope so.

And one more thing:please Gunn, make the extras look like aliens with an imaginative design instead of being a bunch of body paint artists.
