GOTG VOL. 3 Director James Gunn Says He'd "Love" For The Franchise To Continue With The New Team

James Gunn may not return to direct another Guardians of the Galaxy movie, but the filmmaker has admitted that he would love to see the franchise continue with the new team we met at the end of Vol. 3...

James Gunn has made it clear that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 would be his final time behind the camera for the MCU franchise, and the movie did serve as a fitting send-off for the team - but it also laid the groundwork for potential follow-ups/spin-offs at the same time.

One post-credits scene introduced a new incarnation of the team led by Rocket Raccoon, and the other teased the possibility of a solo Star-Lord adventure, with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) returning to Earth to reconnect with his grandfather.

Gunn was asked about the possibility of a fourth GOTG movie being developed by Marvel Studios with a different director, and admitted that he would "love" to see the franchise continue and trusts Kevin Feige to find the right person to take over.

"Kevin and I get along really well. Although some characters won't return, I would love for GotG to continue with the current+ members and would trust Kevin to choose the right person for it."

As for Quill, Gunn recently addressed that final "The Legendary Star-Lord Will Return" title card on the film's Blu-ray commentary, and it sounds like there are indeed tentative plans in place for a spin-off focusing on the (former) leader of the Guardians' effort to adapt to life back on Terra.

"Oh, but not quite over. We always want to give somebody a little something special. And Chris and I, forever, have talked about how great it would be to be able to do a 'Legendary Star-Lord' movie, a story with Star-Lord on Earth trying to adapt to the environment of Earth in the same way that somebody else might try to adapt to the alien environment of outer space. He's a fish out of water in just kind of regular water. So I can't wait to see it."

How would you feel about more GOTG movies without Gunn at the helm? Drop us a comment down below.

"In Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 our beloved band of misfits are settling into life on Knowhere. But it isn’t long before their lives are upended by the echoes of Rocket’s turbulent past." "Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him on a dangerous mission to save Rocket’s life—a mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them."

Gunn writes and directs Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, Pom Klementieff, featuring Vin Diesel as Groot, Bradley Cooper as Rocket, Sean Gunn, Chukwudi Iwuji, Will Poulter, and Maria Bakalova. Kevin Feige is the producer and Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Nikolas Korda, Simon Hatt, and Sara Smith serve as executive producers.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is now available on Digital platforms and Disney+.

Would hope they don't get a K-Mart James Gunn

Bring in someone who will maintain the spirit, but bring something new to the series

Edgar Wright
Garth Jennings
Joe Cornish

For sure not Taika Watiti

@dracula - honestly why not Taika?

I feel like his sensibilities would fit this more then they did Thor which was the big issue people had with him

Plus , him & Gunn are similar in some ways but different others so he could maintain the spirit but also then do his own thing.

@dracula - From what I understood, part of the humor with Love and Thunder was they would scrap the professionally written dialogue and replace it with things the actors thought was funny.

So, I suspect that the director just needs to try to stick with the approved script.

Guesing if they did another trilogy

First film would focus on Adam Warlock
Second film would focus on Kraglin
Third film would focus on Phyla-Vell

I honestly would be more interested in that Star Lord spin-off then a new Guardians movie with the team at the end as of now…

They just don’t seem appealing or interesting enough to me on their own but maybe that could change if we do get stories with them.

I wouldn’t mind seeing them as supporting characters though such as in Kang Dynasty or Secret Wars , that could give you taste of them & see if people want to see more or not.

Would love to see him do sci fi.

I love where the characters end up at the end of guardians 3.

Kevin needs to find a distinct writer and director like he found Gunn for guardians.

Remember Gunn was gonna quit filmmaking before Feige offered him guardians. He wanted hit monkey but feige knew better.

He needs to find a director with a unique style. I would love the always sunny crew to get their hands on guardians😎

I'm only disagreeing because it's not gonna be Gunn directing.

@Origame - I’ve got a big theory… now that Gunn’s gone, Fiege will scrap the Star Lord movie and bring him back to the main roster.

Feige’s learned the hard way getting rid of the OG team doesn’t always work.

And given how big a gamble the first movie was and how much of a success it turned out, lighting might not strike twice with this bottle.

I'd rather see legendary Star lord and Nova solos before seeing another GOTG movie. Do annihilators or Starjammers for a new cosmic team.

bkmeijer1 - 12/18/2023, 2:26 AM
@MCUKnight11 - Starjammers would be great, as would Nova. Kinda wanna see Nova end up leading the new team (+Captain Marvel) against Annihilus

If the MCU can bring in someone with the stones not to DEI these characters into the dirt like The Marvels did, then I would like to see more stories that include some of these great characters.

Make it so!

@ModHaterSLADE - They've been dragging their feet on introducing NOVA so long that, seeing him anytime within the next 5-years would be a minor shock to me. 🫤
