GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 3 Star Zoe Saldaña Confirms The Movie Will Be Last Time She Plays Gamora

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 star Zoe Saldaña has confirmed that the upcoming threequel will be the last time she plays Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but what does that mean for the character?

Heading into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 next week, we're expecting to say farewell to a number of beloved characters. Whether that's because they'll die or simply fly off into the cosmos remains to be seen, but another cast member has now confirmed the threequel will be the last time we see them in the MCU.

During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gamora actress Zoe Saldaña confirmed her exit following the upcoming movie.

Explaining that James Gunn mulled over killing the character in Vol. 2, the Avatar: The Way of Water star said, "I don’t think this is the end for the Guardians. It is the end for me, for Gamora."

Dave Bautista has made it clear he won't return as Drax after Vol. 3 due to it being a mostly thankless role for him as an actor. He's not even participating in this press tour (supposedly due to filming commitments) and hasn't shied away from being critical of how his character's arc has been handled.

Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt didn't clarify his MCU future one way or the other but tells the trade, "I’ve done jobs where I’ve been so close to people, then the job ends and I just never see them again. And that happens. I don’t think that’ll happen with us."

Gamora died in Avengers: Infinity War, only to be resurrected in Avengers: Endgame, albeit as a Variant from 2014. We can't imagine she'll die again here, but it certainly sounds like her story is ending here one way or another.

In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.

Was kinda expected her to stay around a little longer since this is basically Gamora's first movie.

Wonder who we will see in the future though. Could see some Guardians show up when the MCU adapts Annihilation

They can only tell so many jokes. Her arc was over when she and Thanos died.

I love how "actor says they aren't coming back" translates to "omg, they are spoiling the movie!"
Folks, people are allowed to move on and pursue other acting gigs. Just because they play your favorite character shouldn't mean that they are intrinsically tied to the role. Imagine if Shakespeare's troupe refused to ever put on another of perfomance of Romeo and Juliet just because their titular leads aged out of the role.

Besides death, the characters could be recast or (and I know this is a long-shot) the characters may actually reach a satisfactory conclusion to their arc and sail off away from the main events of the MCU. We don't need to know how every character ends to tell a good story. Personally, I am hoping that some of these endings are left ambiguous, with characters like Rocket heading home to start a new family or Peter, Gamora, and the remaining crew starting a new journey in the distance beyond our Galaxy.

Comic stories are not end-stopped. Why should the films have to be so finite?

All that said, I do believe that at least Drax and Kraglin will be pushing daisies after this installment. I think Mantis, Cosmo and Groot are safe. Everyone else...it's a toss up.

@TheRose - I remember when Age of Ultron was coming out, and that movie was the final movie in Downey's contract at the time, meaning no one knew if was returning or not regardless of Tony being alive. Of course, when it was announced that no there wouldn't be an Iron Man 4, but he would be in Civil War and ongoing people were relieved. Nowadays, not returning, or maybe not returning, folks insta-jump to...

She stated she wants someone else to plays Gamora, so the character isn't going anywhere.

Eff that straight off. We haven't gotten to the cosmic-based huge crossover event where Galactus helps defeat the Celestials and we won't even see the Guardians when that happens? Screw Gunn.

Good. She has about the same level of charisma as a pair of wet socks.
