Heading into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 next week, we're expecting to say farewell to a number of beloved characters. Whether that's because they'll die or simply fly off into the cosmos remains to be seen, but another cast member has now confirmed the threequel will be the last time we see them in the MCU.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gamora actress Zoe Saldaña confirmed her exit following the upcoming movie.
Explaining that James Gunn mulled over killing the character in Vol. 2, the Avatar: The Way of Water star said, "I don’t think this is the end for the Guardians. It is the end for me, for Gamora."
Dave Bautista has made it clear he won't return as Drax after Vol. 3 due to it being a mostly thankless role for him as an actor. He's not even participating in this press tour (supposedly due to filming commitments) and hasn't shied away from being critical of how his character's arc has been handled.
Star-Lord actor Chris Pratt didn't clarify his MCU future one way or the other but tells the trade, "I’ve done jobs where I’ve been so close to people, then the job ends and I just never see them again. And that happens. I don’t think that’ll happen with us."
Gamora died in Avengers: Infinity War, only to be resurrected in Avengers: Endgame, albeit as a Variant from 2014. We can't imagine she'll die again here, but it certainly sounds like her story is ending here one way or another.
In Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, our beloved band of misfits are looking a bit different these days. Peter Quill, still reeling from the loss of Gamora, must rally his team around him to defend the universe along with protecting one of their own. A mission that, if not completed successfully, could quite possibly lead to the end of the Guardians as we know them.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 arrives in theaters on May 5, 2023.
