James Gunn Negotiating GOTG VOL. 3 Exit But His Script WILL Be Used And He May Return To Marvel

Things are looking up for James Gunn. While he is indeed in the process of leaving Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, his script will be used and he's in serious demand from other studios. Take a look...

According to a new story from The Hollywood Reporter, James Gunn has recently been approached by several top producers and executives as they look to hire the Guardians of the Galaxy director to take charge of any number of big movies. "I’d work with him in a heartbeat," said one senior executive at a rival studio. However, Gunn is unable to entertain any offers until the Disney situation is resolved and Warner Bros. (which is in charge of the DCEU) is named as one possible suitor to the director.

It's said that Gunn is currently locked in complicated negotiations with Disney over his exit settlement and due to his "pay or play" status with the studio, he'll likely receive a payout of $7 million - $10 million because he's entitled to what they would have paid him had he actually worked on the film.

Sources also tell the trade that Disney is planning on using Gunn's script for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, something which confirms that report from earlier today was inaccurate (as we suspected). Here's the kicker, though; two sources tell them that there is a hope the filmmaker will return to Marvel Studios either to helm Vol. 3 or to take charge of another movie for them somewhere down the line. "An end-all verdict hasn’t been issued and conversations with Marvel are still ongoing."

For now, it seems we'll just have to wait and see what happens but the future looks bright for Gunn regardless of whether or not he ends up directing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. What do you think?

Great to hear, nice to know that not every studio is going to make a massive fool of themselves like Disney has.

Here's a crazy idea, what if Gunn were to direct a Marvel show?? Hasn't he said in the past that he pitched a Moon Knight series or film? (perhaps I'm mixing up directors). Doing a TV series where he doesn't have to work for Disney but can still use MCU characters would be pretty sweet.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I don't know about Moon Knight, but he once said he was interested in Hit Monkey.

@HeavyMetal4Life - I don't think he should have been fired, especially so quickly. But I also understand why Disney did, and mainly was because just a month before they had to deal with dumbass Roseanne.

Difference is, she is exactly what her tweets were...while Gunn is not. Terrible, awful "jokes", but it is nothing more. Also, he already apologized for them years before! Really hoping Disney takes more time and reconsiders.

@HeavyMetal4Life - "make a massive fool of themselves like Disney"

I'm still having trouble seeing why they are "massive fools" for this. With a brand like theirs and based on the content of the tweets.... there were many logical and business driven aspects to this decision.

We may not agree with it or like it - hell I don't feel bad for Gunn, but I would be happy to see him come back - but the decision they made and the reasons they made it, I can understand.

Calling them "massive fools" - as if this will destroy their brand or the MCU - seems pretty overblown to me.

@Menks123 - I keep hearing he apologized years ago - but then I keep hearing it was only for a blog and had nothing to do with the Twitter.

@Menks123 - yeah, huge difference between Gunn and Roseanne. Disney was completely wrong and really made themselves look foolish, acting like pushovers that have no spine. They are the freaking largest company in the business, act like it instead of cowering to the public.

Anyways, what they should have done was immediately issue a statement saying they don't support the tweets but were investigating the situation and would keep people updated. That is how you handle a situation like that, instead of jumping to push the red button.
