Taika Waititi Won't Direct GOTG VOL. 3, But Is Still In Contact With Marvel About Another Potential Project

Well, if you were hoping to see Taika Waititi take over the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise from James Gunn you're sure to be disappointed by the Thor: Ragnarok director's recent comments. Take a look...

Despite being a fan-favorite pick to take the helm of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in the wake of James Gunn's firing, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has now confirmed that he has no interest in the gig.

"Nope. No, not doing that movie," Waititi told reporters during the Television Critics Association winter press tour, where he was promoting FX's What We Do in the Shadows spin-off. "For me, that’s James’ film... Going into something like that, which has got his stamp all over it, would feel like going into someone’s house and going, 'Hey, I’m your new dad...' It feels kind of awkward."

There's no doubt that Waititi would have been an interesting choice to continue the adventures of Star-Lord and his team of intergalactic A-holes, but, honestly, his stance really isn't that surprising. That doesn't mean he has no interest in directing another movie for Marvel Studios, however.

Waititi revealed that he is still "hanging out" with Marvel and "talking about new stuff, but I don’t know what that might be yet. But I want to do another movie with them."

Are there any Marvel projects currently in the pipeline that you'd like to see Waititi direct? Be sure to share your thoughts in the comments down below.

Give this man something cosmic... Nova Corps, perhaps? Or an Adam Warlock film?

@L0RDbuckethead - Since Thanos destroyed Xandar in IW, how about a movie where we have the last Nova, Richard Rider, teaming up with Adam Warlock. And maybe someone else too, like Korg and Beta-Ray Bill.

@Odin - I was thinking a prequel of sorts that deals with everything leading up to Thanos destroying Xandar. But I like that idea too! What other cosmic film could they let him direct?

@L0RDbuckethead - He should do a proper Inhumans film...

@Forthas - That would actually be pretty cool. A good way to redeem that ABC version we were given by Perlmutter and co.

@L0RDbuckethead - Silver Surfer.

@L0RDbuckethead - that's the only way I see a Nova film happening, a prequel that leads up to the battle of Xandar.

Nova corps i could see that.
To be be fair...i think it would be a massive F U for any previous Marvel director to helm GOTG3. Needs a new guy/gal with a similar vision as Gunn...just not his tweet ethics hahahah? Too soon?

I suspect that his attitude is pretty common among most directors with any heat to their names. If Marvel isn’t going to get James Gunn back, they’ll either have to go with someone newly up-and-coming, or someone more workmanlike who won’t have that strong of a personal voice.

@Chewtoy - Jon Favreau

Said this yesterday: Disney have pretty much backed themselves into a corner. They want to replace Gunn, but all these directors support Gunn and don't want to mess with his franchise (with some, such as Taika, emphasizing that Gunn is the best fit to direct Vol3).

Anyways, great to hear that Taika is talking with Marvel about doing another project.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Did you see that awesome Twitter interaction between Edgar Wright, Chris Miller, Taika, and Sean Gunn the other day?

Since Daredevil was canceled and X-Force too, they should give Vol. 3 to Drew Goddard. Or at least I think he would be a great fit.

@WakandanQueen - Goddard would be a great fit, but I'm still rooting for him to take on Fantastic Four.

mmmm i love ragnarok, but I kinda want him to do something a lil smaller scale, on earth? He's my favorite director of all time, "Boy" is my favorite movie ever and "Hunt for the Wilder People" is phenomenal. Both those films are grounded in reality and a bit more dramatic than Ragnarok or What We Do in the Shadows. I'd say give him a crack at a grounded, maybe even street level character? Something unique. No idea what tho haha. I could see him doing a really interesting Moon Knight movie with some dope imagery and an actually good understanding of Marc's illness, but that's a basic answer. :P

If anyone I hope it's Nicole Perlman who's gonna direct it, but I think it will either get cancelled or will be put on hold until atleast 2023. I don't know how Endgame is gonna wrap up Thor's and Star-Lord's stories, but I want Taika doing a movie (or Disney+ series) with only those two.
MrDandy
MrDandy - 2/5/2019, 7:04 AM
@MalseMarcel - It won't be canceled. It's a franchise worth almost 1.4 billion dollars in gross alone. They may delay it for a while, but it'll be here in time.

@MalseMarcel - Nicole Perlman is a flarking screenwriter. Seriously guys...

bkmeijer2 - 2/5/2019, 8:31 AM
@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - So were McQuarrie, Goyer and even Marvel's own Whedon were writers before they started directing. Guess it turned out pretty well for them.
JustAChillFan
JustAChillFan - 2/5/2019, 9:45 AM
@PsychoticSpaceRaccoon - also she only has the writing credit on the first guardians for the basic plot because Gunn said he pretty much redid all the dialogue, motivation and characters. Quill didn't have anything to do with music in the her script and drax had no humor to him. People don't realize that just because you are credited as a writer doesn't mean that final script is anything like what they wrote.
Kyos
Kyos - 2/5/2019, 10:49 AM
@MalseMarcel - When Whedon took over The Avengers he'd written a ton of stuff, film and television, and directed quite a bit of TV as well as one feature film.

Perlman has directed a short film so far.

It's not that Marvel doesn't hire fresh/non-veteran directors for their movies, but they do hire directors with some experience and a body of work to judge them by.
