A New Writer Checks Into The FRIDAY THE 13TH Reboot As The Director Checks Out

The upcoming reboot of the famed Friday the 13th franchise can't seem to catch a break, having been announced after the cancelation of a sequel to the 2009 reboot, only to be delayed multiple times. To make matters even worse, the Wrap is reporting that David Bruckner, the man initially attached to helm the slasher film, has officially left the project. Although it is still possible that Bruckner may direct the film in the end, he is no longer signed on at the moment. The producers, who knew that it may be quite a while before the next draft of the screenplay is completed, didn't feel that it was fair to keep Bruckner waiting. That is why the former director was released from his contract.

The reason why the next draft of the script won't be completed any time soon is because it hasn't even begun to be written yet. Variety has revealed that Aaron Guzikowski is in negotiations to rewrite the film, which was previously penned by Hannibal producer Nick Antosca. It hasn't been made clear exactly how much of Antosca's story will be kept or if it will be written again from scratch.

Very little is known about the plot of the Friday the 13th reboot at this point. The 1980 original focused on a serial killer named Pamela Voorhees as she murdered various camp councilors as retribution for her son, who she believed to have died years prior at the camp. Subsequent sequels featured her more iconic son, Jason, returning to the camp to mindlessly kill all of its unfortunate residents. Aside from the film, which will be released 13 January 2017, a video game is planned for a Fall 2016 release and a television series in development at the CW. Jason Voorhees is also a playable character in the current fighting game, Mortal Kombat X.
