Can World War Z Be Cool?

Even though it's based off an excellent book, the trailers and behind the scenes problems have left many fans wondering: "Is this gonna be any good?"

World War Z is a zombie novel written by Max Brooks. It is a great book and one of the best zombie stories ever written. I personally enjoyed it even more than the Walking Dead; comic and show. This summer, the movie adaptation starring Brad Pitt will be released. The film has had production problems, massive reshoots, and it's release date got changed. When the trailer was released, it showed a swarm of CGI zombies that more than a little resembled I Am Legend. Many fans of the book are now wondering, will this suck?

First, let me address the CGI zombies. I think that it could actually work well, if the movie is zombie action as opposed to zombie horror. Remember what James Cameron did with the Xenomorphs in Aliens. While in Alien, the monster was like a shark, stalking and killing people, Aliens made the monster more like a swarm of ants, thus the film had more action. If World War Z is a zombie action film, I will be fine with that. If it is more zombie horror, well, we got a problem.

This movie seems like it's striving to be the greatest zombie epic ever put on screen, just like the book was the greatest zombie epic ever put on page. From what I have seen, I believe it has the potential to be that. I think Brad Pitt will be great, and I really want to see humanity's all out war on the zombie plague.

And as for the running zombies, I'm fine with it. Again, if it is more of an action film, running zombies will benefit that. Maybe they will go the 28 Days Later route, and the zombies are actually just infected people. I have never really seen an all out battle between a huge zombie horde and the military, and I hope World War Z delivers that.

Finally, let me address the sequels. World War Z is supposed to be the first in a trilogy, and Brad Pitt says he wants to also adapt The Zombie Survival Guide and The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks. Will those be the other 2 films in the trilogy, or do they plan for World War Z to be it's own series, and Zombie Survival Guide starting its own series, with Recorded Attacks being the follow-up to that? Personally, I would want Survival Guide and Recorded Attacks to be the next two films, because the books form a sort of trilogy.

What do you guys think of World War Z? Are you excited, or nervous? Sound off below, and let me know!

@MrSteiners

Battle LA is actually a really good comparison. I really hope this is a halfway decent film. I'm glad Pacific Rim and World War Z will hopefully balance out the summer movie season so it's not just CBM's. I'm glad there are a ton of CBM's, but I am also glad there is some variety.

I loved WWZ and Survival Guide, but this movie looks ridiculous. They totally screwed the pooch with this. How hard would it have been to have it take place after the zombies have been beaten and have Pitt go around interviewing the various survivors and showing individual short films as flashbacks that all kind of document the entire outbreak from start to finish? This os just really a joke and I have no desire to see it.

And if they really are planning a trilogy, then they could have named each movie as a certain point during the whole outbrak.

WWZ: Outbreak, which shows stories of the first encounters with zombies.

WWZ: Total War, which would show the world's militaries trying to fight back against the zombies.

It would have been much better to follow that type of setup than this silliness

As huge fan of the book I was extremely disappointed in the trailer. Once again it appears that Hollywood has screwed up a great movie. To much CGI plain and simple. Zombie films should use practical effects over CGI. I understand that the scale of this movie is suppose to be large but from the little bit of the film that I've seen the CGI looks terrible. I'm hoping that they still haven't finished putting the finishing touches on the special effects. I still plan on seeing World War Z but as of right now it doesn't look to good. Hopefully I'm wrong.

Ya I agree this movie just seems to have none of the greatness that the book had. Seeing a multiple perspective point of view dealing with how the zombie outbreak happened, to how humanity was able to survive the outbreak, to finally humanity turning it's efforts from survival to regaining their world. Also Max Brooks goes into detail on how these are not 28 Days Later rage zombies they are old fashioned zombies. Sure a freshly turned mostly intact zombie can sprint but give him a few months and the muscles finally break down and he can only shuffle. The movie seems that they are all rage zombies and seem to be able to merge into a giant zombie wave that can climb up what seems to be a 50 foot wall.
