It's been a while since we had any updates on Nia DaCosta's upcoming Candyman revival, and some had assumed that the release date must have been pushed back yet again. We now have confirmation that the highly-anticipated horror reboot/sequel is still set to hit theaters this August, however, and DaCosta has also shared some new footage.

The filmmaker sent out a special Juneteenth vide message, which also contains quite a few new shots from the movie. Check it out below, along with a new poster

Specific plot details for Candyman - which was actually developed as a "spiritual sequel" to the original - are still under wraps, but we do know that this retelling will "return to the neighborhood where the legend began: the now-gentrified section of Chicago where the Cabrini-Green housing projects once stood."

.

“For as long as residents can remember, the housing projects of Chicago’s Cabrini Green neighborhood were terrorized by a word-of-mouth ghost story about a supernatural killer with a hook for a hand, easily summoned by those daring to repeat his name five times into a mirror. In present day, a decade after the last of the Cabrini towers were torn down, visual artist Anthony McCoy (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) and his girlfriend, gallery director Brianna Cartwright (Teyonah Parris), move into a luxury loft condo in Cabrini, now gentrified beyond recognition and inhabited by upwardly mobile millennials.”

“With Anthony’s painting career on the brink of stalling, a chance encounter with a Cabrini Green old-timer (Colman Domingo) exposes Anthony to the tragically horrific nature of the true story behind Candyman. Anxious to maintain his status in the Chicago art world, Anthony begins to explore these macabre details in his studio as fresh grist for paintings, unknowingly opening a door to a complex past that unravels his own sanity and unleashes a terrifyingly viral wave of violence that puts him on a collision course with destiny.”

This is not the place for a liberal/far right political debate. Let's focus on the FILM, y'all

@xfan320 - Anytime a piece of media involves people of color or is specifically made to represent people of color the far right will come in to belittle and silence those in celebration. It's hard to not debate or discuss a film when people like Thor1991 and TyrantBossMedia constantly want to bash and insult people who are in support of something they detest.

@SonOfAGif - YUP. 100% this.

They need to be whacked like the moles they are. Popping up every single time something there’s even a whiff of racial discussion.

Clive Barker is an underrated writer who's works have been done dirty more often than not on film, especially when it come to sequels. Hopefully this does a good job of bringing his vibe to the big screen.
