Nearly seven months after it was initially reported, it looks like Brad Pitt finally got his guy as Variety has confirmed that David Fincher has officially closed his deal with Paramount Pictures to helm their upcoming World War Z sequel.

A production start date hasn't been given just yet, but the studio is reportedly eyeing January 2018.

The sequel to the 2013 sleeper hit has long been in development but over the past few years, has had to face a number of setbacks as it lost its original director J. A. Bayona (Jurassic World 2) in early 2016 and then was put on an indefinite hold this past February when Paramount removed it from their schedule entirely, due to Pitt's divorce proceedings. However, all seems to be back on track now and despite a release date not being given, if we were to make an educated guess, a summer 2019 release date is likely in the cards.

This will be Fincher's fourth collaboration with Pitt after Seven, Fight Club, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and will also be his first film project since 2014's Gone Girl. He's also well-known to audiences for directing Alien 3, The Game, Panic Room, Zodiac, The Social Network, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Also, while he's steered clear of films, Fincher did recently complete work on the pilot episode for his upcoming Netflix series Mindhunter, which is expected to debut this October.

So, what do you guys think? Sound off with your thoughts below!

I never thought I would see the day when David Fincher would end up directing the greatest zombie sequel of all time.

Awesome, now make it rated R like the first should have been and clean up the CGI. Love a good zombie movie when done right, Dawn of the Dead, 28 Days/Weeks later, etc.

One of the best directors out there.

Fast zombies are the scariest things ever on film. None of that slow shit, when you can't outrun them....frick that.

@Ramiel - I remember it came out the same month as MOS, and I only had money for one ticket so..

I had my priorities settled.

So it's safe to say Pitt won't butt heads with the director on the 3rd act like he did on the first movie.

very interesting, but I'd rather he develop another Palahniuk novel instead.

Sweet. Fincher is an amazing director, and it's been a while since a great zombie film or series.

Speaking of Fincher, what are the chances that they make a movie based off of the Fight Club 2 graphic novel? It would be kind of weird, but Hollywood does like reusing good ideas.

World War Z is what you would call a Hollywood miracle. The craziest production problems from the start, and after all the reshoots and changes, it still managed to be good and earn some cash.

For Brad Pitt to want to do a sequel and convince David Fincher to direct it, then it can only mean they have a story that would really surprise fans.
