HALLOWEEN KILLS Carves Up The Box Office With $50 Million Opening - Despite Day-And-Date Streaming Debut

Halloween Kills looks set to exceed all box office expectations with a very impressive $50 million domestic opening, despite releasing in theaters and on the Peacock streaming service simultaneously.

Halloween Kills is now playing in theaters and on Peacock, and David Gordon Green's horror sequel is exceeding all expectations at the domestic box office despite its day-and-date streaming debut.

Initial estimates for the Universal/Miramax release were between $30Ms-$40M, but Deadline reports that the gruesomely violent slasher is set to take in $50.16M, giving it one of the highest opening weekends of the pandemic era.

While Halloween 2018 proved to be a pleasant surprise for fans and critics alike, Kills has been a lot more divisive. Currently sitting at 38% on Rotten Tomatoes with a much better audience score of 78%, many feel Green and co. dropped the ball by delivering a run-of-the-mill middle chapter with very little genuine tension or suspense. This clearly hasn't deterred audiences from flocking to theaters to witness Michael Myers' latest rampage, but we might well see a significant second-week drop.

Have you guys been to see Halloween Kills on the big screen, or did you watch on Peacock? If you haven't checked it out yet, do you intend to? Let us know in the comments.

Minutes after Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis), her daughter Karen (Judy Greer) and granddaughter Allyson (Andi Matichak) left masked monster Michael Myers caged and burning in Laurie’s basement, Laurie is rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, believing she finally killed her lifelong tormentor. But when Michael manages to free himself from Laurie’s trap, his ritual bloodbath resumes. As Laurie fights her pain and prepares to defend herself against him, she inspires all of Haddonfield to rise up against their unstoppable monster. The Strode women join a group of other survivors of Michael’s first rampage who decide to take matters into their own hands, forming a vigilante mob that sets out to hunt Michael down, once and for all. Evil dies tonight.

That’s because a grand total of 12 people have peacock and only 4 of them know what’s on it.

@MrDandy - I have Xfinity, so I technically get Peacock for free… but a month after Peacock launched, my cable bill went up by $30. What a deal. /s

@MrDandy - I have Peacock, mostly for WWE, their original programming is almost nonexistent, but I still went to the theater.

@MrDandy - honestly I got it, though just the free version with ads. I didn't check but from what I know the day and date releases aren't covered in the free version. It's actually cool for watching old shows like heroes and also all the john wick movies

@MrDandy - Not true because the only way to watch the WWE monthly events is on Peacock and WWE has a huge audience. WWE streaming channel is gone.

@TheUnworthyThor - They actually have a lot of good movies on there, usually.

@MrDandy - I can attest to this. I have it and barely ever watch it. But I'm always surprised by the amount of good movies on it.

So I actually enjoyed Kills for the most part, although it was seriously dumb at times.

@RorMachine

So dumb. I allow some leeway when it comes to horror and I love McBride but its a ridiculous movie.

I had fun, too. I don’t know if I like it as a follow-up to 2018 but it’s so extreme and visceral it’s hard not to get a reaction.

@RorMachine - Michael takesdown about 12 firefighters with ease at the start but then gets beat down by a mob of the same size later LOL the movie couldn't even stick to it's own rules.

@Ocelot -

Remember that fire fighter trying to use the water hose🤦

Michael was like:

Nice try bitch, DIE!!!

@RorMachine - I enjoyed it overall. The hospital scene where the angry mob thought that short, fat escaped convict was Michael was so bad though. It was so heavy handed and just stupid.

CorndogBurglar - 10/16/2021, 1:04 PM
@Ocelot - The mob at the end that took him down looked a lot bigger than just 11 people. But still. 11 firefighters with axes and saws couldn't even touch him lol.

It is time to SETTLE those Legal Issues and bring back Mr. Voorhees.

The audience is still there!

Let’s go!!!

@IronGenesis - it will be interesting if Voorhees is part of the settlement, after all he wasn't the killer in the first movie and never dawned the hockey mask. Could be that even with the copyright issues he's not even included.

“An unstoppable killing machine is slowly moving through town on foot, easily murdering everyone he sees. Let’s all split up and hit him with baseball bats and pipes! And make sure we only give guns to the stupid and elderly!”

- The flawless logic of the characters in Halloween Kills.

Hopefully Laurie won’t be stripped of anything exciting to do and isn’t just confined to a hospital just like Halloween 2, once Ends comes around
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 10/16/2021, 11:24 AM
@BlackBeltJones

They seriously over-marketed her. I was expecting her to be confined from early reactions but it still hurt. Hate when they pull that shit.
santoanderson
santoanderson - 10/16/2021, 11:29 AM
@BlackBeltJones - David Gordon Green has said Halloween Ends begins with a “huge time jump”, so that should give Laurie enough time to heal. She was seriously underutilized in this movie.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 10/16/2021, 11:30 AM
@regularmovieguy - agreed. It’s tiresome how often this happens with marketing manipulation. I was expecting so much more.
TexasAvenger
TexasAvenger - 10/16/2021, 11:35 AM
@BlackBeltJones - I get that they wanna pay homage to what came before and fill these movies with Easter eggs, but did they have to rip off that plot point from Halloween 2? I had seen people on Twitter say that it’s awesome Judy Greer has “a lot more” to do in this movie so I got excited. She doesn’t really do much either and dies in such a bullshit way. I hated the ending.
regularmovieguy
regularmovieguy - 10/16/2021, 11:54 AM
@TexasAvenger

That ending needed more buildup. It happened way too fast and it was jarring. A build up of dread would’ve made it more fulfilling imo.
GhostDog
GhostDog - 10/16/2021, 12:01 PM
@TexasAvenger - the ending was such bullshit.

I felt bad for Judy Greer. You think she’s got more to do but she really doesn’t and how she went out was ridiculous.

I think these guys are making it up as they go along.
TexasAvenger
TexasAvenger - 10/16/2021, 12:32 PM
@regularmovieguy - It probably makes it slightly less lame, yeah. I thought it was bullshit that the house was full of people and Michael was on the other street, and he just magically appears behind her. Whatever.
TexasAvenger
TexasAvenger - 10/16/2021, 12:34 PM
@BlackBeltJones - Certainly feels that way.

Really great opening. A couple things, I don’t think day and date has a huge impact on opening week. The legs on this movie will drop off a cliff next weekend. And Peacock is also one of the bottom tier streamers, curious to see how many actually watch this on Peacock compared to some of the other day and dates this year.

I had fun with this movie, it’s seriously dumb at times and hope they have a better script for Ends…but I had a fun time.
