Linda Blair To Return As Regan MacNeil For David Gordon Green's EXORCIST Movie

We knew Ellen Burstyn would reprise the role of Chris MacNeil for Halloween Ends director David Gordon Green's Exorcist trilogy, but it's now being reported that Linda Blair will also be back as Regan.

Some head-spinning news for horror fans here!

David Gordon Green's upcoming Exorcist movie - which has been confirmed to serve as a direct sequel to William Friedkin's original horror classic - is bringing back the pea-soup-spewing devil child herself, Regan MacNeil.

According to Above the Line, Linda Blair is set to reprise her most famous role as the girl who found herself possessed by a sadistic demon known as Pazuzu. Apparently, Blair was only on set for a few days, so probably won't have a major part to play in the story.

The actress also served as an advisor on the film, which wrapped production earlier this month.

The new Exorcist trilogy will feature Ellen Burstyn as Regan's mother, Chris MacNeil, along with new cast members Leslie Odom Jr., Ann Dowd, Lidya Jewett, Jennifer Nettles, Olivia Marcum, Raphael Sbarge, and Okwui Okpokwasili.

There was a lot of support for Green taking the helm of this new trilogy when the well-received Halloween 2018 was released, but after Kills and Ends... not so much! Now, fans are more than a little worried about what the director has planned.

Widely considered one of the scariest movies ever made, The Exorcist focused on a possessed young girl (Blair) and her mother's (Burstyn) attempts to free her from the grip of the demon with the help of two priests (Jason Miller and Max Von Sydow).

Of course, the movie already has two sequels. The first, John Boorman's surreal The Heretic, was critically panned and actually had very little to do with the events of the first film. However, William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist III (based on his novel Legion) was a lot better, and served as a more direct follow-up to the 1973 classic.

What do you guys make of this development? Do you think it's a good idea to have an adult Regan be part of the sequel? Drop us a comment down below.

You know, with Halloween you could argue that the fanbase, or at least a section of the fanbase, was open to the idea of a clean-slate back-to-basics reboot, since from day one every Halloween sequel introduced something that took something away from the original and the two horrible Rob Zombie movies were the last things to come out of the franchise, leaving a bad taste on everybody's mouths. Plus, the slasher genre was kinda dead, so it was also fun to have another high-profile one of those, if you are fan of that stuff.

With Exorcist, on the other hand, I know it had terrible sequels too, but it feels like it has been easier for the fanbase to just ignore those, since all of them were about different demonic posessions, rather than the original demon coming back for another round, so they didn't really add anything to the mythos that made the original feel more lame, at least not the same way as "Laurie is actually Michael's secret sister" or "Michael was actually working for a weird cult" did to Halloween. Also, while to this day the original Halloween is universally seen as the best one in its franchise, some fans do put Excorcist 3 on-par, if not above, the original, so you can't even argue that there's a hole for "one actually great sequel" to be filled. Also also, it isn't like there hasn't been bazillion demonic posession movies in recent years, so this isn't even a case of resurrecting a dead genre.

'Halloween' (2018) was enjoyable and competently directed (bar the almost-subplot that went nowhere), but 'Halloween Kills' (2021) was awful. The story was weak and it took so much time to develop, it felt as if they were killing time until the end, which is a common flaw in bad horror movies. It put me off watching the 'final' part. 'The Exorcist' is such a different property, I doubt if Green has the chops to make a grown up film. We just got 'The Pope's Exorcist' trailer the other day - and it was filled with all the same tired tropes - completely killed my interest. This should unfold like a dark, slow, psychological nightmare.

Why is it a thing to make sequels that skip other sequels?

@Jacory - Well, when the other sequels in question are (relatively speaking) mounds of steaming shit, then, it's OK to ignore them and retcon them out of existence. 🤔 (And for the fans of 'Exorcist 3', I offer up no apologies for my observation.) 😏

Usually when Halloween rolls around; Top-10 Horror Lists start popping up. And IMHO, the #1 horror flick of all-time remains The Exorcist. 🤓
