Matthew McConaughey Will Reportedly Play 'Randall Flagg' In THE STAND

We had heard there was interest in nabbing the Interstellar actor for a role in director Josh Boone's take on Stephen King's classic novel, but now The Guardian reckon it's a done deal: McConaughey will play the demonic Randall Flagg in Warner Bros. The Stand.

Back in late August, the trades reported that Matthew McConaughey was being "heavily considered" for the villainous role of Randall Flagg in Warner Bros. planned adaptation of Stephen King's The Stand. Following that, director Josh Boone denied that anything was official, actually stating that he'd always envisioned McConaughey in the role of main protagonist Stu Redman, and Christian Bale as Flagg. Well now The Guardian seem to have confirmed the initial report, as according to them the Oscar winning actor will indeed haunt some cornfields in the movie as "the Walkin' Dude", Randall Flagg. Recently we found out that WB were actually planning to adapt King's 1200 page novel into four films, which makes a lot more sense than the one 3-hour movie we were originally told we'd be getting. CBS Films will co-produce and co-present The Stand, with Roy Lee and Jimmy Miller producing. So far the only other actor to be cast is The Fault In Our Stars' Nat Wolff, who will play a character created specially for the movie.

I approve of this casting.

@pepe

Is'nt Flagg black?

He's White, but in the book he once got a tan, joined the Black Panthers after convincing them he wasn't a White guy, and helped start a shooting spree. He also was a part of the Klan at one point.

The guy is a demonic instigator.
He's an equal opportunity destroyer of men.

Great Choice! I hope he shows up in Dark Tower, if they ever move forward with that!

The Stand is a great book but there's not enough there to have 4 movies worth of material. They're going to turn it into too much action/adventure and they're going to ruin it.

Now if they're lying and making a Stand movie and the other three are the REAL conclusion of Flagg via the Dark Tower, well that would be absolutely awesome!

It WAS an action/adventure novel.
I mean, it's post-apocalyptic horror!
All kinds of madness was going on throughout the book.

I personally think there is more than enough there for four movies.
Easily. Although three could work, too.

Clearly they will start with the spread of the super-flu, the attempt to contain it, and the beginning of the fall of society and branch off from there.

If they can convincingly stretch out the Hobbit/Lord of the Rings the way they have, This book should not be a problem.

It's either this or another TV event and I think a set of movies is a better choice.

Depending on who you ask they absolutely couldn't. ;)

I recently listened to a great interview with director John Broome on the Nerdist podcast. He spoke about his love of The Stand that goes back to childhood, his actual friendship with King and he displayed obvious and impressive passion for and deep knowledge of the work. I'm thinking his Stand is going to be something special. He said he was talking to some a-list talent that was going to surprise and excite everyone. This Matthew McConaughey news proves he was telling the truth about that. As a fan of the book I'm excited. That Nerdist interview is a great one check it out.

Great choice! I'm sure he can pull off a very convincing Flagg. To be honest, I`m most curious to see who they cast as Larry Underwood. I also hope that this Nat Wolff guy plays a fairly minor character if it's an original one. The book had enough characters as it is, unless they're simply taking a character's personality from the book and reworking them a bit, which would be stupid. He does look a little bit like what I envisioned Nick to look like though, because I never really bothered to look up detailed descriptions of the characters' physical appearances.

McConaughey is a great actor. But I can't see him as Flagg. I've read that book in its unabridged version a few times and I'm a huge fan of it and most of King's books.

McConaughey doesn't exude enough evil. I'm not saying he can't, but I think there are far better options out there. He's just a super hot property right now. Everyone wants him to play everything. I say give him a rest and let him do what he does best -- flawed heroes.

In fact, he'd be far far better as Stuart Redman if he's going to be in The Stand.

After True Detective, I have complete faith that he will be awesome as Flagg. I Can't wait for more casting news. Also, anyone else bummed that they are shoehorning some "original character" into the movie? are they pandering to the tweens and teens with this Fault in our Stars guy? Sure feels like it.

Didn't Jami Sheridan, who played Oliver Queen's dad, Robert Queen, in the original TV version of "The Stand" as Flagg?

I usually hate casting of at actors who are popular in the moment, but having read the unabridged Stand a couple of times, MM is spot on. The TV miniseries had several awful castings, but Jamie Sheridan did the character justice given the confines of TV.
