Director Federico Alvarez has revealed a few small bits of information about the upcoming Evil Dead remake. Here are some quotes from El Pais as filtered through Google Translate.

Speaking on the cult follwoing of the original:
As fans of the original we know [that] we are going to offend those who are also fans and [it] will bother you, but we can not make a movie just for them… we have a pretty decent [script] that give's realism to the dialogue, in our case [having Diablo Cody do a rewrite] was essential to that.

Speaking on the difference between the original and the remake:
The only recognizable face is that of Bruce Campbell, but it will be in a cameo towards the end of the film. Another thing that will change [is] the characters and some story details, while keeping the basic outline of friends alone in a cabin who are beleaguered by demons.

The article also mentions that the film is aiming for a Halloween 2012 release date. However, there are no actors or shooting date confirmed. Alvarez goes on to say that he doesn't want to use big name stars and will look at new faces. Alvarez also mentions that the film will likely lose most of it's comedic undertones.

The Evil Dead is a 1981 horror film written and directed by Sam Raimi, starring Bruce Campbell, Ellen Sandweiss, and Betsy Baker. The film is a story of five college students vacationing in an isolated cabin in a wooded area. Their vacation becomes gruesome when they find an audiotape that releases evil spirits.

The film was extremely controversial for its graphic terror, violence, and gore, being initially turned down by almost all U.S. film distributors until a European company finally bought it in the Cannes Film Festival marketplace. The film premiered in Michigan on October 15, 1981 and was finally given a limited release in early 1983. The film was a moderate success at the box office, grossing a total of $2,400,000 in the U.S upon its initial release, against a budget of probably no more than $400,000. Despite getting mixed reviews by critics at the time, it has since developed a cult following. The film has spawned two sequels, Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness, and a stage musical; work on a script for a further film has started.

ElBicho@How bout "Within The Woods", The original short film by Sam Raimi that inspired him to do Evil Dead and has the basic outline of it (Group of students in the woods haunted by demons, and a young Bruce Campbell getting possessed) . As a fan I am okay with the reboot as long as they keep the tones from the original and Bruce Campbell's cameo is him being Ash making some joke in the end making it canon and setting up for a actual Evil Dead sequel.

@InSpace

Raimi should punch up the script himself and not let that hack wreck something we all love.

These movies are beloved because of their B movie campiness. No need to reboot imperfect perfection.

This hack director sounds like a typical arrogant piece of Hollywood filth with his condescending attitude towards fans of the original movie that will be offended by this unnecessary remake. You can do a lot fancier effects and a lot more gore than the original, but that does not make a better film. You "can't make a movie just for (fans of the original film)"? There are an awful lot of us out there, enough to make a nice profit for this film. Offending the built-in core audience for a film is hardly a way to boost its box office.

ElBicho and Cerebro: You are both absolutely correct, and I'm in complete agreement.

Hopefully, Campbell will play Ash and these other characters will be all new. That way it'd be a reboot/sequel.
ElBicho@ "Untalented"? Did you see Juno and Jennifer's Body? She's a screenwriters screenwriter. They couldn't have picked anyone with more talent.

May I be the first to say 'Federico Alvarez you [foo foo]'

Evil Dead is a classic, getting rid of its comedic undertone, would be getting rid of evil dead, you're not making an evil dead film, you're making cabin fever with a demon instead of a virus, [frick] you Federico Alvarez I hate you, Ash is in it but only as a cameo, you arse.

Sorry, but this REALLY p*sses me off! How can you start ANY film with just a "Pretty decent script?" I want to hear that it's an OUTSTANDING script. Otherwise I'll think - and I DO think - that it's just another crappy cash-in, milking the original fanbase! Won't be watching, won't be buying the bluray. Nuff said!

Well, good luck with all of that.

"but we can not make a movie just for them"

Ok so need for the legions of evil dead fans to see this, and the film can just bomb as being just another horror flick.

"The only recognizable face is that of Bruce Campbell, but it will be in a cameo towards the end of the film."

Wow heartbreaking, why don't you take a chainsaw and cut off our arms while you're at it?

Rumor has it Hollywood wants to plagerized even more cult movies. Expect to see a new Rocky Horror Picture Show soon starring such talent as George Clooney and Cameron Diaz. Also next year will be time for a politically correct modernization of everyone's favorite Pink Falmingoes reuniting Julia Roberts and James Garner with Sally Fields.

Not excited about this, except that it makes me want to watch the original again.

so the way i just interpreted that about the reboot is that it will be new characters dealing with the same shit Ash and his friends did years before.

*facepalm* What a dumbass.

When will they ever get it? YOU ALWAYS CATER TO THE ORIGINAL FANBASE BECAUSE THAT'S THE GUARANTEED MONEY. You don't just say "hey, the original fans aren't going to like it but we can't make the movie for them". Then who and why the [frick] are you making it for? Why bother to continue a franchise when your aim isn't to callback the people that made it popular in the first place? No wonder Raimi isn't directing this, these idiots don't have a clue.

Good luck trying to appeal to the teen angsty emo loving torture porn generation that wouldn't know what real horror was if it was permanently on instant replay behind their eyeballs.

SugarYumYum: I was going for the same basic point in my previous post, but you said it far better than I did, especially your last paragraph. Brilliant.

Horror today has to show everything explicitly and with as much gore as possible. Look back at the classic horror films from the 60s through 80s, and there was often not that much actual gore being shown. The violence occurred offscreen, leaving it to your imagination to figure out just what happened. That was part of the fun of a good horror film.
