It's Halloween, and to mark the spookiest day of the year, Paramount Pictures has shared a new poster for the upcoming fifth installment in the Scream franchise.

The one-sheet features the latest wearer of the iconic Ghostface mask brandishing a blade with perennially put-upon heroine Sidney Prescott's reflection. Who will be stalking Sid this time? "It's always someone you know," but could it actually turn out to be either Dewey Riley (David Arquette) or Courteney Cox as many have speculated? That wouldn't make much sense given everything the trio has been through together, but you really never know!

Check out the poster below along with the recently released trailer, and let us know which scary movies you'll be watching tonight.

Twenty-five years after a streak of brutal murders shocked the quiet town of Woodsboro, a new killer has donned the Ghostface mask and begins targeting a group of teenagers to resurrect secrets from the town’s deadly past. Neve Campbell (“Sidney Prescott”), Courteney Cox (“Gale Weathers”) and David Arquette (“Dewey Riley”) return to their iconic roles in Scream alongside Melissa Barrera, Kyle Gallner, Mason Gooding, Mikey Madison, Dylan Minnette, Jenna Ortega, Jack Quaid, Marley Shelton, Jasmin Savoy Brown, and Sonia Ammar.

Paramount Pictures teamed with Spyglass Media to co-produce and distribute Scream, which has Ready or Not duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett on board to direct. James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick are co-writing the screenplay. Producers for the film are Vanderbilt, Paul Neinstein and William Sherak, with Kevin Williamson executive producing.

Scream slices its way into theaters next January.

I predict the new ghostface killer will be the long lost identical twin of someone who was killed off in the first film. 🎥

Watched Scream 2 earlier. It mostly holds up a few very silly moments aside. Thinking of giving 3 another go now but I remember not liking it very much. Also watched Happy Death Day which was surprisingly decent. Anyone seen a 2018 movie called Terrifier?

dracula - 10/31/2021, 7:42 PM
@RorMachine - 3 is for sure the weakest, partially because of Nev being busy on the final season of party of five

@RorMachine - Terrifier is pure gore. If you like killer clowns, this is your movie.

@RorMachine

3 is fine, honestly. Kills weren’t as over the top and the half brother lineage is a little convoluted, but it’s not bad at all.

Have to say I prefer it to 4. Which is also fine.

@dracula - And also because it was written by Ehren "Skids and Mudflap" Kruger instead of Kevin Williamson.

To follow trends of franchise revivals

The killer will be the son of her and Billy Loomis who she had and gave up for adoption between the events of Scream 1 and 2

TheWarThor - 10/31/2021, 7:58 PM
@dracula - I think the killer is just some random person who isn't after Sidney, rather the killer is trying to get revenge for her by going after the relatives of the previous killers.

@ElricReturns - The hierarchy of evil in the Scream franchise is about to change.

I like this franchise. It's fun and regularly swings for creative meta twists. This franchise isn't meant to be judged seriously, they are fun meta horror films. They subvert the genre regularly, but should be hailed or looked at as art.

Just fun.

I hope this outing doesn't take itself too seriously.

@ElricReturns - no horror movie should be it’s reason they don’t get nominated and win awards movie awards shows

I think I now know what it's simply called Scream. Scream 1-4 was the Sidney Quadrilogy. This new Scream seems to be the beginning of a new saga with the new lead and Sidney and the crew are just part of the "reboot" of sorts.

Stinkor1 - 10/31/2021, 10:26 PM
I don’t get the latest trend of simply using the original movie’s title as the new movie’s title. A reboot is one thing, a remake is another thing. But if the sequel is DIRECTLY connected to the original then it really should have a different title.
Uhhhhhh
Uhhhhhh - 10/31/2021, 11:44 PM
@Stinkor1 - The Scream franchise has always been a critique of current trends in the slasher film genre. The most popular trend in the genre now is reviving classics and using the original name to make it seem like a direct continuation of the first film's story. Even judging by the trailer and how the killer seems to be a fan of Sidney and a fan of the events of the original movie (he or she leads Sidney and Gale to Stu's house at some point), that seems to be the direction their taking with this film.

@MyCoolYoung - the 4th was a bit meta, I'd say yes
Uhhhhhh
Uhhhhhh - 10/31/2021, 11:42 PM
@MyCoolYoung - The Scream franchise has never been a parody. More like meta critiques on current trends in the horror/slasher genre(s). This one seems to be taking aim at the "return to format" soft reboot of classic slasher films, like Halloween (1978) and Halloween (2018).
