SPIRAL: FROM THE BOOK OF SAW And ARMY OF THE DEAD Underperform In Disappointing Weekend For U.S. Box Office

Two big horror movies opened in theaters this weekend, but both Spiral: From The Book of Saw and Army of the Dead fell short of expectations in North America. Find more details on that after the jump...

Just as it was starting to look like the box office was making progress, two big new movies underwhelmed in North America this weekend. The biggest let-down was Spiral: From The Book of Saw, a movie Lionsgate hoped would resurrect a franchise that ran its course quite some time ago.

With Chris Rock and Samuel L. Jackson in lead roles, the movie was expected to have a strong opening despite many theaters still remaining closed.

The Saw spinoff opened with $8.7 million, quite a bit less than the estimated $10 million - $15 million that was originally projected. However, with a lowly 38% on Rotten Tomatoes, perhaps it's no great surprise that moviegoers didn't feel it was worth braving the theaters to check this one out.

Zack Snyder and Netflix's Army of the Dead is playing exclusively in theaters for seven days before hitting the streaming service on Friday. However, despite a huge marketing campaign, it also came in below industry projections of $1.5 million - $2 million with a disappointing $780,000. It's worth noting that the movie is primarily playing in Cinemark theaters due to a deal with Netflix.

It's also a bad time of year for horror movies, especially now America is starting to open up and people are busy with proms and the like heading into the summer.

In our review of Army of the Dead, we concluded by saying: "Zack Snyder makes zombies cool again in Army of the Dead, but falls into bad habits along the way. Dave Bautista, however, steals the show, and the movie is fun, dumb, and wacky enough to make this a franchise we hope to sink our teeth into again."

What did you check out this weekend?

I watched Halston this weekend. So “***** off!” 😉

Army of the Dead was so heavily promoted on Netflix (see in my mind...Netflix is still just streaming) so I just assumed I would watch it at home, sort of surprised it was in theatres at all for 1 week.

When I flipped through Netflix looking for Army, that’s when I saw “oh it’s premiering 1 week after a theatre release”

Not that I would have had the option to see it in New York this weekend anyway.

I'm not going to gloat about a movie underperforming, but I just know a part of this news will not go over well with certain people.

@Kumkani - There’s been barely any promotion for these films, so what did they expect? I’ve seen absolutely nothing about Spiral recently and had to check yesterday to see when it was actually coming out.

You would think the #RestoretheSnyderverse campaigners would go support their guy in order to prove that he's capable of drawing big audiences.

On this particular situation the numbers are a little bit tricky, aotd underperformed but at the same time it played in 600 theatres iirc and it's a netflix movie, so most likely people weren't expecting a theatrical release. Plus the pandemic and all that. As for spiral, anyone watched it? How was it?

@roboticJohnson - yeah. It's still too early to judge the state of theaters. Just that these were too early for pure theater release

I wanted to check out Spiral because i like all the Saw films execpt 7, but i'm not sure if its worth the risk. Then again, that kind of trash is ideal for a movie night

I honestly don’t think people really knew Army was in theaters, I found out on Thursday bc of a comment here and that’s coming from someone who follows Zack’s career pretty closely. Only one theater in my area was showing it and when I showed up my girlfriend and I were t just the only ones in the showing but the only ones in the building for any of the movies according to the staff. As for Saw I don’t think there’s much love for that franchise anymore to begin with let general alone awareness of this new one.

Also it was very strange going back to the movies after over a year and seeing every single movie on the marquee show as Rated R I’d never seen that before. I’m just happy it’s an option now since here in NY a lot of our theaters were shut down voluntarily even after they were allowed to open up until Godzilla vs Kong came out, and I didn’t even go bc we weren’t vaccinated yet

I get that Halloween comes out in October but Spiral really should have released closer to October.

That's unfortunate but not necessarily as bad as some people believe I wonder how Those Who Wished Me Dead did I'm really looking forward to that movie.

Meh. Spiral looked weak, but Army of the Dead looks like it'll be a fun watch at least.

Anyone know what they meant by Snyder "falling into bad habits"? That could be pretty innocuous (like pointless slow-mo and greased up muscle bodies) or it could be straight up offensive.

STREAMING SERVICES HAVE OFFICIALLY DESTROYED! THE MOVIE GOING EXPERIENCE FOR ALL AGES. IF SOMETHING IS GOING TO BE ON STREAMING SERVICES, THEN LET IT BE ON STREAMING ONLY! AND IF IT'S GOING TO BE A BLOCKBUSTER HIT, LET THEM BE A BLOCK BUSTER HIT.
THE DAYS BEFORE A MOVIE WOULD COME OUT TO THEATERS A FEW MONTHS, AND THEN BE DISPERSED AMONG THE WORLD ON STREAMING SERVICES, AND BLU RAY AND DVD. WHAT HAPPENED?!?!?! SERIOUSLY!?!?!?! SINCE WE CAME BACK FROM 2020 DID OUR MINDS GO INTO THE CRAPPER???

ALSO, WE NEED TO START MAKING HIGHER QUALITY "STORY TELLERS"...NOT "VISUAL EFFECTS".
WERE DOOMED IN THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY, SERIOUSLY.

@Turtleguy90 - You do know that before streaming services became big, movies flopped left and right because people just weren't interested in them right? The first few Saw films kept getting sequels due to how low their production budget were but some never went past $150 million worldwide. Movie theaters have only thrived because of blockbusters. Not films like Ad Astra or Saw.

Saw Spiral this past weekend and it was alright. Definitely one of the better sequels of a very much dead franchise. C+
