Don't Expect Alien Activity In IRON MAN 3; Kevin Feige Comments On The Mandarin's Ten Rings

While Marvel Studios already introduced magic and aliens to its big cinematic universe, it seems we won't see any of that in the Shane Black-directed film. More after the jump...

"Some people call me a terrorist. I consider myself a teacher." Those words pretty much tell us what can we expect from Sir Ben Kingsley's portrayal of the iconic villain, 'The Mandarin'. In the trailer, we finally got a good look at his ten rings, but it remains to be seen what kind of purpose do they have. One thing seems to be confirmed: there won't be any magical elements to them. In the trailer analysis over at Entertainment Weekly, they got a quote from Kevin Feige about all this:

"Feige says we won’t get ice rays and fire beams from these rings, like in the comics, but what will we get? Smart money says they’re not just because the Mandarin has won a lot of Super Bowls."

In the comics, the ten rings have a near-limitless power and no Earth science can explain that power. Each ring has a function, so it will be very interesting to see what kind of use (if any) will they have in Iron Man 3. My guess: the rings will have some sort of technological fuction. Also, the site added this regarding the aliens:

"But this version of The Mandarin will not follow that same backstory, said Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios. Don’t expect aliens."

While aliens and magic were already introduced to Marvel Cinematic Universe (Thor, The Avengers), I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that we won't see any of that in this film.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Stephanie Szostak, James Badge Dale with Jon Favreau and Ben Kingsley, Iron Man 3 is directed by Shane Black from a screenplay by Drew Pearce and Shane Black. The film is set for May 3, 2013 release.

Marvel Studios’ Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy’s hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity and instincts to protect those closest to him. As he fights his way back, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him: does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?

Thank goodness. This movie looks packed with stuff as it is. No need to bring in magic or alien tech.

@RunawaysHD Maybe not in the 616-verse, but we don't know his full capabilities in the MCU.

And guys, if The Dark Knight Rises, To Boldly Flee, and Birth By Sleep have taught me one thing, it's that creators can lie to your face about how a story will go.

I'll wait until at least a novelization before I start judging.

Who's actually saying this? It's not Feige.

Considering this is based on Extremis, and the concept of Stark's armor flying at him is based on it sensing those bracelets he wears, perhaps the Mandarin's rings serve a similar purpose and he will also end up with armor. You know, like every other villain Iron Man has faced?

@Mrcool210 wasn't it the other way around? I seem to remember most people hating on Nolan for changing Bane.

Hmmm, I'm actually a little confused. Obviously they have some sort of abilities to them, but why do I get the feeling that they're planning on changing what the rings do originally? I mean, if you look at the rings and their powers, some may seem a little cheesy to be placed on screen.

@Newbus yes it was. Kevin Fiege is so successful that he can now talk about himself in the third person.

okay... if the rings are somehow tech, then they have to have some background in alien tech since as far as I know tech that SMALL on a ring requires a HUGE power source if you try to tone it down to "human engineering" sort of way. IF (and I do mean a BIG IF) the abilities come from the rings themselves then the said abilities are going to be FINITE for something of that size. Alien tech can be easily believable in the movie even without showing actual aliens on screen. There are different origins on the rings as one time the cartoons even posit it as the power source of crashed ship that the Mandarin stole on an archeological dig and turned them into rings when they really aren't.

Ah, I knew it! His "power" is that he can squirt citric acid from his rings. That is why he calls himself "The Mandarin"

shadyginzo - 10/24/2012, 12:31 PM
@Mrcool - precisely, that double standard is ridiculous. white bane is not different from while mandarin, no venom is no different to no mystic rings.

plenty of people (including me) said Hardy could convey the essence of the character without the superhuman abilities and theres no reason to doubt Kingsley won't do the same. would like to see more footage but what we've seen is shaping up well.

and unlike bane he doesn't sound like scooby doo.

I wish Marvel would let The Mandarin have his super powers when he wears the rings & I wish they would go with his backstory.

Who in their right mind was expecting aliens and ice beams? Each ring will symbolize a different terrorist organization connected to the Mandarin ... you heard it here first, folks.

This is kinda disappointing to me. I will wait nd see how Mandarin is played and what (if any) powers he has, but I was looking forward to all of the powers from the rings even if they tweaked the origin of the rings. Ah well. :(

In the Mandarin we'll have Marvels spin on Nolan's Joker. We'll see a well financed agent of chaos.

So according to Feige, there hasn't been a complete dismissal of the powers or aliens. It really sounds like you're all jumping to that conclusion based on his vague implications.

Yea, the Makluan rings have always been tech based, it'll be pretty easy to write some tech based "powers" for the rings to have.

I was hoping his rings had powers.

SN: The rings are NOT mystical. They're alien science based.
