I Still do not see why Iron Man 2 was so disliked.

I'll get plenty of haters and bashers for this, but honestly, I loved Iron Man 2 and thought it was better than one in some ways.

Editorial Opinion

Filed Under: Iron Man

Lets see...I LOVED the first "Iron Man" and thought that like "Blade," it was an instant classic. The acting was perfect, the suit and effects were so amazing if not mind-blowing and absolutely the best effects I have ever seen on film, the story was greatly cared for and very well-written and is one of the best CBM's to date in my opinion, and will always be that way to me. The first movie paved a strong road for the avengers crew to travel upon, and opened the doorway to many new possibilities within the filming and comic industry alike. There is no doubt about that.

I finally saw "Iron Man 2" in all its glory the other night, and it brought back the action, humor, and dazzling effects of the first, along with some new additions. I have heard from so many people that "Iron Man 2" was not as action-oriented as the first. Well, for starters, in "Iron Man," we had the first real action with the terrorist hideout escape scene, then the first running of the suit with a run in with the air force, then the very end battle with Iron Monger. With "Iron Man 2," we got the first real action with whiplash at the racing arena, the fight between Tony and Rhodey, all that Black Widow stuff, the chase scene of a program-controlled suit with Rhodey in it(War Machine)and drones chasing Tony, then finally, the ending battle of Tony and Rhodey vs. Drones and Whiplash in a custom Iron Monger type suit. If all that isn't action I do not know what is.

There were some complaints about "Iron Man 2" being a "Post-Avengers" film instead of a film about the character singularly. Honestly, this did not strike a problem with me, as I thought that the tie-ins and hints were somewhat essential for the films to come. I thought that they shared a good connection for once instead of being all about that character, with a world that pretends like the others do not exist. I got tired of the whole "I am the only superhero on Earth" type thing and with both "Iron Man" films, the films simply showed us that that was not the case anymore.

The only problem I DID have was Black Widow. She wasn't Russian! I will be honest and say that that was really the only distraction I had problems with when trying to enjoy the film. Besides that speed bump though, I feel that the sequel truly outshined the original in terms of action, and will always feel that way. I will not ever see it as a bad CBM like generally everyone else does, but instead I will always see it for what it did have, which was indefinitely more action. I was just a little bit disheartened to find out that it did not sit too well with the general public when I saw it as a greatly treated CBM just as its predecessor was.

But anyway, that is all I have to say, besides this:
Good Day peeps!

Movie had great action, great, acting and was all around visually great.

I don't understand the hate either.

The main things that was hated about the movie was the compilation of characters & story arcs. While it all came together in the end, it became a big mess at one point.

PLUS the Avengers subplot with Nick Fury came out of nowhere. So while fans love the movie, general audiences & critics frowned on it. But is an action-packed, fun flick.

And also, the original was so perfect, expectations were set too high.

Of course, the reviews were positive, because the film came together in the end. But in every positive & negative review, they said the Avengers subplot felt [and was] forced in.

Even though I like the movie, I do consider a "big mess" rather than "horribleness" simply because of how much was thrown in. But yeah, ya get what I mean.

My issues with the movie

1. Superfluous Black Widow- She wasn't even worth the screen time, and then throw in that she wasn't even Russian and it's just a waste.

2. Overdone comedy - The Justin Theroux script was awful, and allowed for too much of the improv comedy that made Tropic Thunder so much fun. The comedy was hardly in cohesion with the film, unlike in the first one. RDJ was too silly, and not genuinely funny like in IM. It also clearly came out in the donut scene, where SLJ was far too Jules Winfield and not enough Fury.

3. The Final Battle - Pretty anticlimactic and a complete rip off of the final battle in Ironman.

Let's see, bad guy in newly improved suit that Ironman can't defeat on his own, but WAIT! Tony uses a secret superblast with the help of his friend (Pepper and RHodey) and defeats the enemy without harming himself or his friend! Brilliance!

4. Dancing IM - Only slightly less embarrassing than My Chemical Spidey.

I'll have to watch it again, but that's a start.

I don't hate the movie, it is very fun, and I'll watch several times over. But I was disappointed and thought that it missed on the magic the first one had.

On a side note, I do think it is interesting how DC and Marvel have decided to take opposite approaches to their big films. DC is going dark and serious, where Marvel is taking a much more lighthearted approach, while still staying dramatic

Loved this film. Of course it wasn't as good as the first but it was still good. I admit the plot did start to get confusing but, everything else about the movie was great.

Action packed flick? There were only 2 action pieces throughout the movie. First action piece didn't occur till 30 minutes into the movie and the second at the end. And they both are really short and the main villain fight is shorter than some of the one minute men on this site. Don't really count the party as an action piece. Really try to forget that pitiful scene even happened.

Most was just Stark talking about random ass shit and the main villain actually does nothing villainy but build robots almost his entire time. Its like after Monaco they forgot they have a villain to deal with and go to the whole avengers thing and during the last part its like oh we got a villain in here lets rap this character up real quick and man he went out with a banger shorter than vanilla ice rap career. DOnt even mention Sam Jackson acting like Sam Jackson dressed as Nick Fury and Don Cheedle lame rhodes character that didnt even vibe well with the rest of the cast.

This movie is really lame. Iron Man 1 ranks among the best of comic book movies up there with Batman and Spider-Man. Iron Man 2 ranks among the worst comic book movies. It looks good but that dont disqualify it for having a horrible story with so many subplots that dont tie together properly. Shorter and less action scenes than the first one with random talk thrown everywhere.

Other than the constant easter eggs, not quite enough action, and the dancing Tony, it was awesome.

@theworldisyours: I agree with you. Iron Man 2 does get a lot of hate. I've had an idea for editorial defending it in my head for a while. I will have to get on it. But ultimately, you are right. It was good, not perfect, but not as bad as so many make it out to be.

I don't understand the hate either. I believe it's one of the all-time CBM greats. Iron Man 2 had everything that made the first one so awesome. (in my humble opinion.) Many people felt that SHIELD was shoe-horned in, but I never got that impression in the several times that I watched it. Nick Fury, SHIELD, and Black Widow were all necessary to the plot and gave us important background info, especially about Tony's relationship with his dad. I thought that the story was rich and the dialogue was witty and snappy, just like the first one. And the performances were up to par. RDJ, as usual, owned the role.

One disappointment that I can understand comes from the people who were expecting to see a real gritty Demon-in-a-Bottle storyline. I, on the other hand, saw Iron Man 2 as mere stepping stones to something bigger to come involving Tony's alcoholism in Iron Man 3.

@Nephillim

See... that's a criticism that doesn't resonate with me. Nick Fury, Black Widow, and SHIELD are all supporting characters in the Iron Man comics. Even if there wasn't an Avengers film coming out, or a Marvel Cinematic Universe for that matter, I would expect those guys to appear in an Iron Man movie. Saying that IM2 was just Iron Man and SHIELD + Friends holds as much water as saying Thor was just Thor and Jane + Friends.

@gmoney0505

Iron Man 2 had the same amount of action as the first one. Take out a stop-watch and see for yourself. At least the final battle with Whiplash actually involved Iron Man, instead of just Iron Monger vs. Tony Stark in a broken armor... like what we saw in the first movie. And worst comic book movie of all time? Lmao.... Give me a break. Batman and Robin, Catwoman, and Spider-Man 3 are the champions of that category. Even if you really didn't like it, Iron Man 2 is not in the same ballpark, not even the same league, HELL... not even the same sport as any of the all-time worst players in CBM history.

I love the movie, but there are certain aspects that I would have done differently.

1. Black Widow would have had a Russian accent.

2. I would have used the Living Lazer instead of Whiplash.

3. I would have either toned down the Avengers sub-plot or made it more relevant to the film itself. ((I mean: half of it was basically an advertisement for "The Avengers"))

I like it. The Monaco GP scene is awesome and there's a lot of robot action. Rourke was a not great villain and I would have preferred they kept Terrance Howard. Still, it was entertaining beginning to end.

The plot is not at a all hard to follow. That's a lame criticism. The Avengers stuff being out of left field? I don't know about that. We all saw the Nick Fury cameo from IM and the Stark cameo in Hulk. IM2 just continued the Avengers links. They used a sequel to an established character to set Avengers up rather than using Thor or Cap's first introductory films to do it which totally makes more sense. The subtle hints in Thor (Hawkeye's cameo is not distracting) and likely in Cap are cool but they had to show the audience the beginning of the team at some point to make it work. We all know The Avengers was coming and everyone loved the hints so complaining about actually showing it is hypocritical.

I love what Marvel is doing.

I too liked IM2 actually more than the first film. I thought the Avengers bits were actually the best parts of the film as it took Stark out of his comfort zone and really challenged him.

LMFAO!!!!@TheWorldisYours
You broke down those scenes to make it look like it had more action sequences when 3 of those are happening in the same sequence. Plus the last fight with Vanko is over in 2 seconds. You take out your stop-watch and time both movies and Iron Man 1 actions scenes take up more time than IM2 could ever dream of.

I can tell an awesome comic book movie as Iron Man 1 and The incredible Hulk are awesome comic book movies and Iron Man 2 is just a disaster [frick].

@indoraptor12
You describe the last fight as Iron Monger vs. Tony Stark. Well that's a shame that a fight between a man in a suit vs. a human is more entertaining, imaginable, and fricking longer than a fight with 3 people in a battle suit on a battlefield the size of someone's apartment.

I loved Iron Man 2. Personally I like it more than Iron Man 1, but I also enjoy the crossovers. The scence where Black Widow was introduced and Tony said, "You're fired" became my instantly my favorite. I didn't feel The Avengers ties were forced, it was more of a natural progression of the film. Tony was dying and going out of control, and he lost the Mark II suit. So, who better to come and set him on track than S.H.I.E.L.D.. Plus watching Black Widow kick Hammers guards asses was awesome.

The Whiplash fights were small, but I'm not one for useless action anyway. What action the film had was epic and amazing. The Hammer Drones rocked. What we did see of Whiplash in action was great, and the final scene could have lasted longer, but there was about 10 minutes of battling before it with the drones. No need really for a long drawn out boss battle so to say.

No dancing Iron Man...I don't like that stuff! I know it cant be all serious but find another route for superhero humor. The Spider-Man and Iron Man dance scenes should have been left on the cutting room floor! Overall I enjoyed Iron Man 2..War Machine rocked on the screen.

I am so glad i'm not the only one who absolutely loved this movie! Great article. IM2 took everything to a whole new level, I was avidly following this movie b4 it came out and once it came out so wasn't disappointed. IM2 FELT different than IM1, I actually see them as equal. The only things were distracting was the Tony/Pepper dialogue was hard to follow (but easily remedied by watching it a 2nd time) and the last battle was a bit anti-climactic. But the good far outweighed the bad. I hope that over time people will come to realize that.

This movie was entertaining to me. People need to stop crying and griping over little shit. I admit the ending should've been longer and there were a few things that irked me (Black Widow with no Russian accent and switching Terrence Howard out) but [frick]it it was still an all around good movie and enjoyable to watch IMO. OKAY, I FEEL AS IF I NEED TO POST THIS-- people complaining about the fight scenes being short, real fights are actually very short usually only seconds (if the fighters actually know what they are doing instead of just what looks like hugging[school fights]) and you seem to forget that Tony Stark is a genius and would think of a way to quickly end the fight instead of just bash around for 5 hours wasting ammo or power(Rhodey's power) anyway...THE MORE YOU KNOW.

and I actually like this one just as much if not more so than the first Ironman.
