When news broke that Schindler's List actor Ben Kingsley was in final negotiations to join Marvel Studios' anticipated Iron Man 3 as an undisclosed villain, the long-awaited inclusion of The Mandarin became more of a probability. And while reports suggest Kingsley will in fact portray the "Ten Rings Leader", with certain characteristics altered from the comics, a new casting call has been issued amplifying that possibility.

Major Motion Picture Casting Call

The Major Motion Picture "CAGED HEAT" is seeking those interested in working as Extras on the film.
Filming on this this star studded movie will take place this summer in various areas of North Carolina.

The Tona B. Dahlquist Casting Company (of The Hunger Games, Homeland, Leatherheads & Forrest Gump) will be holding a call on Saturday April 14, 2012 in the Raleigh area.

ALL TYPES, ALL AGES & ALL ETHNIC DESCENTS ARE NEEDED.

In addition there is a special need for those of Chinese as well as Middle Eastern descents. Production will also be in need of business types with luxury vehicles.

Those interested in applying must bring a non returnable current snapshot. "This photo can be printed off your computer and taken with your cell phone. We just want to be current and look like you". states Dahlquist. Casting Forms will be available on site Saturday morning.

Those interested in applying should attend the open call for extras on:

Date : Saturday April 14th, 2012

Time: Anytime between the hours of 10 AM - 1 PM

The alien invasion in avengers is a perfect set up for explaining how Mandarin gets his rings.
In the comics he made them from tech out of a crashed alien ship. They could easily say he did the same from battle that takes place with the aliens in avengers

I agree 100%..if his heart isn't into using Mandarin then he'll end up ruining the character. If you can't give the character justice, don't use him at all.

Just because Shane said Mandarin is a racist character doesn't mean he doesn't want to use him as the villain. And maybe he just hinted that he will alter some characteristics of Mandarin to remove those the stereotype.

Don't jump to conclusions just yet.

@SuspenseSmith: I know your being sarcastic, but I think that is an excellent idea. We are not in the Cold War, anymore. We don't need Chinese and Russian villains in films set in modern times. Maybey, they can call him "The Terrorist" instead. Either way, I would be for an update like that. They would need to keep the heart of the character, though.

@Marvel87

That might be the case with your average production company, but Marvel Studios probably lays out what they want to do with the prospective directors they are hunting. They are not making one and done movies, or even trilogies, they are building upon a Marvel Movieverse. That was why, when they hired Kathryn Bigalow, she had to get going because she didn't like the stuff Marvel gave her. If the director doesn't like it and want to work with it, Marvel will get another.

I'm sure there's plenty of Asian actors that would love to play Mandarin. Just rewrite then character so its not racist, Shane! I hope Kingsly is not Mandarin I would prefer these comic book movies stay close as possible to the race of the character. Which Marvel seems to not care about.

Dear Kevin Feige,

Take a lesson from you predecessor, Avi Arad, and don't force a director to use a character he doesn't want to. If you do, you'll end up with Spider-Man 3.

Hopefully they'll include Mandarin's character but set him up as a villain for another Iron Man film or for one of the villains in Avengers 2.

I don't understand all these comments about Kevin Feige "forcing" Shane Black to use The Mandarin in Iron Man 3. If you go by what Joss Whedon said in one of his many interviews to promote The Avengers, Marvel Studios will approach a director with what they want in the movie. After that, they're free to go off and do the movie they want to do within those parameters.

With that being said, if The Mandarin is the villain for Iron Man 3, Black would've known from the start and could've turned the job down. Obviously he wants to take on whatever characters they asked him to, otherwise he would've walked away from the project. The only thing Feige asked Whedon not to do in The Avengers is include an extra villain he wanted. This is because of the story they wanted to tell -- I doubt they'd all of a sudden be asking Black to shoehorn a villain he doesn't want to explore into Iron Man 3.

On the flipside, the studio has a clear idea of what they want. They wouldn't hire a director who wasn't on board with that.

That's pretty damning evidence. I think Shane Black will write it so Mandarin doesn't use alien technology to give himself powers.

I think Mandarin will use very advanced man-made technology instead.

@Just1Superguy I know you were joking, but it's really upsetting that some Middle Eastern countries are centuries behind when it comes to women's rights.

I know in Jerusalem for example, they are very progressive when it comes to women. I wish more Middle Eastern countries would follow their example. Ah, sorry, got off topic there. I'm in one of those righteous moods. :)

@Nomis Well, in Iron Man, the Ten Rings terrorist cell is based in the Middle East. So I would assume Mandarin is going to be of Middle Eastern heritage in RDJ's Iron Man films, instead of Chinese. And Ben Kingsley is actually have Indian.

My take on the Mandrian, he will be one of the members of The Ten Rings, which, by the way, is not a terrorist organization but instead a group that is attempting to build an empire not through terror but through conquest. The members of Ten Rings will probably have code names like "Mandrian". I wouldn't be surprised if they have them destabilizing some Asian/Middle East governments. Perhaps we will see Mandroids in IM3 or Dreadnaughts.

As for directors, the way things usually work, the director is hired to direct a movie that has already been written and has limited input on the script unless they are also the writer or producer. Marvel has given their directors a lot more freedom than any other studio. Even allowing the directors to decide what the story will be about and who should star in the movie.

Hey Just1Superguy--- If you actually kept up with current events (for the past several decades), you'd see that North Korea, China, and the Middle East aren't just a concern of Republicans. How could you really research these areas (oh yeah, you never have) and not realize, on some level, they represent a threat? Welcome to the REAL world, jackass.

"The alien invasion in avengers is a perfect set up for explaining how Mandarin gets his rings.
In the comics he made them from tech out of a crashed alien ship. They could easily say he did the same from battle that takes place with the aliens in avengers"

Except that Raza, who is a head honcho in the Ten Rings terrorist group already has one of the rings in the first movie, why would there already be rings and a group named after them before they are actually created? Unless they already exist, but The Mandarin just imbues them with power (possibly nanotechnology?)
AvatarIII
AvatarIII - 4/12/2012, 1:49 AM
Also, Shane Black chose to direct this movie, if he didn't want to use the Mandarin he could have left the project since it hadn't really started yet, if he is using the Mandarin, it's because he wants to, Spider-Man 3 was different because Raimi was already invested in the franchise.

First of all, there is nothing that indicates that the ring Raza wore had any kind of power whatsoever. Who is to say that the top guys in the Ten Rings don't have rings already to show their status?

It doesn't mean that Mandarin can't take alien tech from crashed ships and those flying things in Avengers, and create himself actual 10 rings of power to fit with the name of the organization.

Remember, in the comics Mandarin didn't find 10 rings from a crashed alien ship. He just used the tech to CREATE 10 rings.

Anyway, its just a thought. It would be a much better explanation than having some no-name alien race crash with no back story. Just use tech from the aliens that we know about, y'know?

Basically, Mandarin could have taken the alien tech and created any kind of weapon he wanted out of them. He could have made ten guns if he wanted. But he CHOSE to make them into rings. Being that he already has an organization called the Ten Rings, it would be pretty symbolic to create 10 rings of power to go along with his organization.
