IRON MAN 3's Mandarin Is Something Special Says Kevin Feige

Marvel Cinematic Universe mastermind Kevin Feige is greatly impressed with Sir Ben Kingsley's portrayal of The Mandarin. Kingsley has reportedly achieved something that's only occurred a handful of times on a Marvel Studios movie set. Read on to find out what.

A fresh report from the set of Iron Man 3 from USA Today takes us behind the scenes of the third outing for Tony Stark and what will surely be his toughest test yet. Sir Ben Kingsley's portrayal of The Mandarin has reportedly roused even the most jaded Marvel Studios film crew; Kingsley has such a dangerous aura while filming scenes as The Mandarin that crew members are literally scared to speak.

"On his last take of his first full day as the Mandarin, when they yelled 'Cut!' the entire crew burst into applause, spearheaded by Mr. Downey himself," Feige said. "It was pretty amazing to see that."

Out of the six Marvel Studios films that have come before Feige says that he can count on one hand how many times something like that has happened.

"That's what you get when you hire Sir Ben Kingsley. He's so excited about his part and so into this character, and frankly just scaring the heck out of everybody," Feige continued. "[The film crew] are like, 'You've broken us out of our skeptical malaise!' "

This news definitely bodes well for Iron Man 3 wouldn't you say? If the crew members that have been there through out most, if not all, of the Marvel Studios film endeavors are impressed, imagine how mesmerized moviegoers will be come May 3rd.

Based on Warren Ellis' Extremis storyline and following the box-office shattering events of Marvel's The Avengers, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) has become the target of global terrorist The Mandarin (Sir Ben Kingsley) who has secretly been the mastermind behind most of the tragedies in Tony's life. Isolated from his fellow Avengers, Tony will have to devise his most advanced armor yet if he hopes to save the woman he loves, Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow). Standing beside Tony as he takes on Mandarin's villainous allies and Ten Rings subordinates will be War Machine James Rhodey (Don Cheadle) who was conspicuously absent during the Chituari invasion in New York. Based on a screenplay by Shane Black (Lethal Weapon, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) and Drew Pearce (Godzilla, Sherlock Holmes 3).

Sir Ben Kingsley as The Mandarin is still a little unbelievable. Seems a bit too perfect. And that voice... wow, expect YouTube impressions in the coming months.

I'm curious about one detail above all: How will The Mandarin influence the events of Phase Two? Akin to Loki's jealousy in Phase One?

I'm not yet sold on his look (though we haven't seen it in full yet) but I really like Sir Ben Kingsley. I hope already that he survives so that he can be a villain for all the Avengers :P Or isn't that a good idea?

"Hope all the racists and purists shut up now.

Sometimes the changes made to these characters to bring them to the big screen are for the better."

... Would you say the same thing if they cast Idris Elba as James Bond?

I'm kind of with @JDUKE25 about this.

I have no doubt his performance is outstanding! But I just don't know if this is going to be the interpretation of the Mandarin that I'd like to see. I'm holding out to see more. For right now, I'm still meh about it.

Also, when did being from India make you not Asian last I checked India is in Asia, and no he is not Chinese but I don't care what race some one is, all that matters is the performance. Marvel has not failed with their own films yet, only gotten better. I just hope to see the HULK. Mark R was so bad az that cant keep him of screen till A2

maybe you make changes like the Red Skull First Avenger film, because the film was marketed as a Nazi scientist obsessed with Norse mythology, I know like the original Red Skull comics. ...

but I imagine that the Mandarin will make similar changes as I understand they did to Red Skull First Avenger in to make it more realistic and cinematic universe according to The Avengers

radiobox00 - you're probably right. But I think part of the reason people aren't as upset is because this is the villain. If they were adapting a traditionally Chinese hero and they cast someone who wasn't Chinese there would be a bigger outcry.

Mandarin is a descendant of Genghis Khan and descendants of Genghis Khan are from diverse Asian backgrounds. Some are even Middle Eastern, Russian and European. Just because he was born in China and had Chinese citizenship doesn't mean he Chinese.

So, there is nothing inaccurate about Kingsley playing the part, being he is of Indian descent (as mentioned, India is and was part of central Asia) and covers the territory of Khan's descendants.

Edit:

Radiobox@ I would do a little more research. Saying India isn't or wasn't the oriental part is just way off. Plus the term "oriental" hasn't been used for years now when referring to Asians. ;-) Which would indicate you aren't too savvy on heritage and ethnic roles.
